- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove battery. Remove lower engine cover.
- If necessary, remove intake air duct and air cleaner assembly. Remove drive belt, fan assembly and radiator.
- Remove left and right upper timing belt covers from valve covers. Remove drive belt idler pulley. (Scheme 16)
- Disconnect sensor harness connectors and wire harness clamps from left and right center (No. 2) timing belt covers. Remove center (No. 2) timing belt covers. Remove distributors and ignition wires. Remove left ignition coil.
- Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside. On SC400, remove hydraulic fan pump. On LS400, remove fan bracket. CAUTION: If reusing timing belt, ensure the 4 installation marks exist on timing belt. (Scheme 17) If installation marks do not exist, place installation marks on timing belt and sprockets.
- On all models, rotate crankshaft until timing belt marks on crankshaft and camshaft pulleys align. (Scheme 17) Timing marks on camshaft sprockets must align with timing marks on timing belt rear plates. (Scheme 18) CAUTION: Do not rotate camshafts or crankshafts after timing belt is removed. Piston/valve contact could occur and damage engine.
- Using Pulley Holder (SST 09950-50010), hold crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using puller, remove crankshaft pulley. Alternately loosen and remove timing belt tensioner bolts. Remove tensioner. (Scheme 19)
- Using Sprocket Holder (SST 09960-10010), slightly rotate right camshaft sprocket clockwise to release tension on timing belt. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprockets. If removing camshaft sprocket(s), use Sprocket Holder (SST 09960-10010) to hold sprocket while removing camshaft sprocket bolt.
- Remove drive belt tensioner. (Scheme 19) Remove lower (No. 1) timing belt cover, gaskets, timing belt cover spacer and gasket. (Scheme 16) Note direction of crankshaft angle sensor plate (timing belt guide) for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt and idler pulleys (if necessary).
