- Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove battery cover and battery. Remove lower engine cover. Remove No. 3 (upper) timing belt covers.
- To remove right cylinder head cover, remove throttle body cover. Disconnect necessary control cables, electrical connectors, coolant hoses and vacuum hoses from throttle body. Remove air intake pipe between air cleaner hose and throttle body. Remove throttle body. Remove spark plug wiring covers and clamps. Remove 8 bolts and valve cover.
- To remove left cylinder head cover, remove transmission dipstick. Disconnect EVAP hose from vacuum switching valve. Disconnect wiring harness clamps. Remove spark plug wiring covers and clamps. Remove 8 bolts and valve cover.
- Rotate crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from rear of engine. Ensure timing mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with "0" mark on timing belt cover. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprockets. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49513-S40848233742001011500000).
- Secure sub-gear on each exhaust camshaft to main gear with a service bolt (6 x 1 x 18 mm). (Scheme 23) Before removing camshaft bearing cap bolts, ensure torsional spring force of sub-gear is retained by service bolt. NOTE: Note location of camshaft bearing caps. Camshaft bearing caps are numbered for location on top of camshaft bearing cap. Camshaft bearing cap is also stamped with either an "I" for intake camshaft or an "E" for exhaust camshaft. Arrows on top of camshaft bearing caps must point in same direction as arrow on cylinder head. (Scheme 24)and (Scheme 25). CAUTION: When removing camshaft, hold camshaft level using proper procedure. If camshaft is not held level, cylinder head thrust area may be damaged, causing camshaft to seize or break.
- To remove right cylinder head camshafts (viewed from rear of engine), rotate exhaust camshaft in right cylinder head, and position timing mark (one dot) at 10-degree angle to top of cylinder head surface. (Scheme 26)
- Remove bolts holding oil pipe at intake camshaft bearing cap. see scheme 12 Remove exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 27) Remove oil pipe, camshaft bearing caps and exhaust camshaft.
- Rotate intake camshaft in right cylinder head, and position timing mark (one dot) at 45-degree angle to top of cylinder head surface. (Scheme 25)
- Remove intake camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 27) Remove camshaft bearing caps, intake camshaft and oil seal.
- To remove left cylinder head camshafts (viewed from rear of engine), rotate exhaust camshaft in left cylinder head, and position timing mark (2 dots) at 15-degree angle to top of cylinder head surface. (Scheme 26)
- Remove bolts holding oil pipe at intake camshaft bearing cap. see scheme 12 Remove exhaust camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 27) Remove oil pipe, camshaft bearing caps and exhaust camshaft.
- Rotate intake camshaft in left cylinder head, and position timing mark (one dot) at 60-degree angle to top of cylinder head surface. (Scheme 26)
- Remove intake camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 27) Remove camshaft bearing caps, intake camshaft and oil seal.
- To disassemble exhaust camshaft, mount hexagonal area of camshaft in soft-jawed vise. Using Spanner (09960-10010), rotate sub-gear clockwise. (Scheme 28) Remove service bolt "B". Remove snap ring, wave washer, sub-gear and gear spring. see scheme 12
