Removal

Remove transmission and drive plate. Using a knife, cut seal lip from oil seal. Carefully pry crankshaft rear oil seal from rear seal housing. DO NOT damage sealing surfaces.

Installation

  1. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean. Apply grease to lip of crankshaft rear oil seal. Using Oil Seal Installer (SST 09223-56010), install crankshaft rear oil seal in rear seal housing until oil seal is even with rear seal housing surface.
  2. Apply Loctite to drive plate bolts. Install and tighten drive plate bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49513-S34527251092001011500000) . To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure.

Scheme 34: Components

Installation is in reverse order of removal.

HINT: Removal of the thermostat would have an adverse effect, causing a lowering of cooling efficiency. Do no remove the thermostat, even if the engine tends to overheat.

Scheme 35: Removal
  1. Drain engine coolant
  2. Disconnect water inlet from water inlet housing Remove the 2 nuts holding the water inlet to the inlet housing, and disconnect the water inlet together with the radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  3. Remove thermostat from water inlet housing Remove the thermostat Remove the gasket from the thermostat
  1. Place thermostat in water inlet housing Install a new gasket to the thermostat. Insert the thermostat into the water inlet housing with the jiggle valve facing straight upward. HINT: The jiggle valve may be set within 30° of either side of the prescribed position.
  2. Install water inlet Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lb)
  3. Fill with engine coolant
  4. Start engine and check for coolant leaks
  5. Recheck engine coolant level
  1. Drain cooling system. Remove timing belt. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49513-S40848233742001011500000). Remove right ignition coil. Disconnect coolant hoses from coolant inlet housing. see scheme 9
  2. Remove bolts, and coolant inlet housing from water pump. Remove bolts/nuts and water pump. Remove "O" ring from coolant by-pass pipe which fits into rear of water pump.
  1. Ensure sealing surfaces are clean. Install NEW "O" ring on coolant by-pass pipe and coolant inlet housing. Lubricate "O" ring with soapy water solution.
  2. Apply a .08-.12" (2.0-3.0 mm) diameter bead of sealant on mounting surface at rear of water pump. Install water pump. Ensure water pump engages over coolant by-pass pipe. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49513-S34527251092001011500000) .
  3. Apply a .08-.12" (2.0-3.0 mm) diameter bead of sealant on mounting surface at rear of coolant inlet housing. Install a NEW "O" ring on coolant inlet housing and lubricate "O" ring with soapy water. Install coolant inlet housing. Tighten coolant inlet housing bolts to specification. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49513-S34527251092001011500000) .
  4. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure. Fill and bleed cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-49513-S07553328822001011500000) .
