Door Locks & Anti-Theft Systems 1 illustration ~446 words

DESCRIPTION & OPERATION

WARNINGVehicles are equipped with air bag supplemental restraint system. Before attempting any repairs involving steering column, instrument panel or related components, see SERVICE PRECAUTIONS and DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

The engine immobilizer system is a theft prevention system. When you insert the key in the ignition switch, the transponder chip in the key's head transmits an electronic code to the vehicle. The engine will start, only when the electronic code in the chip corresponds to the registered ID code for the vehicle.

The system is automatically set when the key is removed from the ignition switch. At this time, the security indicator light flashes. When you insert the key in the ignition switch, the security indicator light goes out and the system is canceled automatically, which enables the engine to start.

SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK

  1. Trouble shooting of an engine immobilizer system complaint begins with verification of the customer problem. Perform Problem Analysis Check (Engine Immobilizer System). (Scheme 74)
  2. Inspect the communication function of the large-scale body multiplex communication system (BEAN). Check that there is no abnormality in the communication system by inspecting the communication function of the body multiplex communication system. See «MULTIPLEX COMMUNICATION SYSTEM»(ref-152050) under COMMUNICATION DEVICES in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. (ECU communication stop, communication line abnormal) With code outputs, go to step 3. (ECU communication stop, communication line abnormal) Without code outputs, go to the appropriate article for each system.
  3. Preform pre-check. See «PRE-CHECK»(ref-152104-S20943813702003011400000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Connect the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester to the DLC3. DLC3 is located under the left side of the instrument panel. see scheme 12 Check for DTC(s) and note if a code is output. Delete the DTC. Check if the DTC will be output once again, when the problem symptom is simulated based on the noted code. When no code is output (symptom check and simulation possible), go to 4. When no code is output (symptom check and simulation impossible), go to «TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS»(ref-152104-S11806021432003011500000). When a code is output, go to step 6. TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS Symptom Suspected Area Engine Does Not Start Key (1) & (2), Transponder Key Amplifier (2) & (3), ECM (2) & (3) Or Wiring Harness (4) (1) See «DTC B2795: UNMATCHED KEY CODE»(ref-152104-S00587491362003011400000) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. (2) See «DTC B2796: NO COMMUNICATION IN IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM & DTC B2798: COMMUNICATION MALFUNCTION NO. 2»(ref-152104-S00965411372003011500000) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. (3) See «DTC B2797: COMMUNICATION MALFUNCTION NO. 1»(ref-152104-S35255484252003011500000) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. (4) Check for open or short circuits in wiring. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-152104-S02775912662003011400000).
  4. Determine symptom. See «TROUBLE SHOOTING SYMPTOMS»(ref-152104-S11806021432003011500000). Without applicable symptoms, go to step 5. With applicable symptoms, go to step 6.
  5. Perform trouble shooting in the following method, depending on the malfunction symptom. Pre-check. See «PRE-CHECK»(ref-152104-S20943813702003011400000). Terminals of ECU. See «TERMINALS OF ECU»(ref-152104-S25122377842003011400000) under COMPONENT TESTS.
  6. Make necessary adjustments, repairs or replacements.
