Engine Immobilizer System: Other Lexus ES XV30

KEYS

Note. Duplicate keys must be made at a Lexus dealer, because a built-in transponder chip is needed to cancel the system or start the engine.

The types of keys are

  1. Master key (black) The master key works in every lock.
  2. Sub key (gray) The sub key will not open the glove box and rear armrest door in the rear seat.
  3. Flat key As a transponder chip is built in it's key case, you can start the engine with this key. The flat key works in every lock.

A transponder chip for the engine immobilizer system has been installed in the head of the master and sub keys and in the key case of the flat key. These chips are needed to enable the system to function correctly.

Starting Engine With Flat Key

  1. Remove the key plate from the key case.
  2. Insert the key plate into the ignition switch. The indicator light keeps flashing.
  3. Bring the key case closer to the ignition switch within 10 seconds. The indicator light goes out. This means the engine immobilizer system is automatically canceled. You can put the key case away now. You cannot cancel the engine immobilizer system if 10 seconds have passed after you inserted the key plate. You need to remove the key plate from the ignition switch and try it again from step 2.
  4. Start the engine within 20 seconds after the security indicator light goes out. If you cannot start the engine if 20 seconds have passed after the security indicator went off, you will need to remove the key plate from the ignition switch and try procedure again from step 2 .

AUTOMATIC KEY REGISTRATION

  1. Registration of a new transponder key must be done when you install a new ECM. The new ECM is in the automatic key code registration mode. The number of key codes for this ECM is already fixed, and so it can be registered. On this type of vehicle, up to 3 key codes can be registered. In the automatic registration mode, the key registered last becomes the sub-key. For new transponder key registration steps, refer to flowchart. (Scheme 81) When no key is inserted in the key cylinder in the automatic registration mode, the security indicator always lights up. When the immobilizer system operates normally and the key is pulled out, the security indicator blinks. (Scheme 82) When the key code registration could not be performed in the automatic registration mode, code 2-1 is output from the security indicator. When inserting an already registered key, code 2-2 is output.
  2. Perform the automatic registration mode completion if finishing the mode forcibly after registering more than 1 key codes in the automatic registration mode. After 1 more key code has been registered with the master key, perform one of the following steps without pulling the key out or inserting the already registered key. Depress and release the brake pedal 5 times or more within 15 seconds. With the hand-held tester, require the automatic registration mode completion.

ADDITIONAL KEY REGISTRATION

Note. It is possible to register up to 7 master key codes including the already registered key code. When any operation time described below is over, registration mode will be stopped forcibly. When the next procedure is started while the timer is working, the timer stops working, then the next timer starts. When replacing the Ignition Cylinder Key Set or Lock Cylinder Set, register according to the following procedure using the original master key. However, after the registration of the additional master key, the original master key and the original sub-key are not necessary any more, and the fore registration of those key codes should be deleted.

PRE-CHECK

Note. Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the function of the immobilizer on the vehicle. Data of the immobilizer or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) can be retrieved from the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When a trouble occurs in the immobilizer system, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) does not come on. Therefore, when there seems to be trouble with the immobilizer system, use the hand-held tester to check and trouble shoot it.

  1. Connect scan tool to DLC3 located under left side of instrument panel. (Scheme 90) If scan tool cannot communicate with DLC3 diagnostic line when ignition is turned on and scan tool is operated, there is a problem either on vehicle side or tool side of the link. If communication can be established when scan tool is connected to another vehicle, inspect diagnostic circuit (TC line) of DLC3 circuit in original vehicle. See «COMPUTER DATA LINES»(ref-141318-S06258940582002121100000) under SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL. The vehicle's ECM uses ISO 14230 for communication. The terminal arrangement of the DLC3 complies with SAE J1962 and matches the ISO 14230 format. (Scheme 89) If communication is still impossible when scan tool is connected to another vehicle, problem is probably in scan tool itself. Consult the Service Department listed in tool's instruction manual. When communication is established, go to next step.
  2. Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester switch ON. Use the hand-held tester to check the DTC(s) and freeze frame data; note them down. (For operating instructions, see the hand-held tester instruction book). Clear the DTC(s). The following procedures will erase the DTC(s) and freeze frame data: Operating the hand-held tester to erase the codes. (For operating instructions, see the hand-held tester instruction book). Disconnecting the battery terminals or EFI fuse for more than 10 seconds. Operate system for which complaint was recorded to see if symptom can be recreated. Again retrieve and record DTCs. If same DTC is displayed and symptom is present, problem is current in diagnostic circuit; diagnose and repair DTC. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS»(ref-152104-S01699628372003011400000). NOTE: When the diagnostic system is switched from the normal mode to the check mode, all the DTC(s) and freeze frame data recorded in the normal mode will be erased. So before switching modes, always check the DTC(s) and freeze frame data, and note them down. NOTE: According to the DATA LIST displayed by the OBD II scan tool or hand-held tester, you can read the value of the switch, sensor, actuator and so on without parts removal. Turn the ignition switch ON. Read the DATA LIST. (Scheme 91)
