Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove RH side gravel shield from under vehicle.
  2. Place a drain pan under radiator. Disconnect inlet and outlet hoses. (Scheme 24)
  3. Remove ATF inlet and outlet pipes. Remove radiator. See appropriate COOLING SYSTEM article in ENGINES.

Installation

  1. Install radiator. See appropriate COOLING SYSTEM article in ENGINES.
  2. Install ATF inlet and outlet pipe. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158278-S26418525492003091900000).
  3. Slide ATF inlet and outlet hose onto ATF cooler pipe until it is fully seated against the ridge. (Scheme 24)
  4. Install hose clamp onto hose at center of mark and at angle shown.
  5. Verify that the hose clamp does not interfere with any other parts. (Scheme 25)
  6. Install RH side gravel shield under engine. Lower vehicle.
  7. Check ATF level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-158278-S11813651822003091900000) under LUBRICATION.

Note. Clean transaxle exterior thoroughly with a steam cleaner or cleaning solvents before removal.

  1. Support the engine with appropriate engine support. (Scheme 26) Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Drain transaxle fluid into proper container. Remove both gravel shields from under the vehicle.
  3. Remove 2 nuts from engine mount-to-mounting member.
  4. Remove engine mounting member-to-chassis bolts and nuts, then remove engine mounting member.
  5. Remove oil pan and gasket. Disconnect all electrical connectors, remove 8 bolts and remove control valve body. (Scheme 27)

  1. Install control valve body, 8 bolts and wiring clips. (Scheme 27) Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158278-S26418525492003091900000).
  2. Install oil strainer and 3 bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158278-S26418525492003091900000).
  3. Connect connectors. Install oil pan and a NEW gasket. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158278-S26418525492003091900000).
  4. Loosely install nuts and bolts of engine mounting member. Install engine mounting member. Tighten bolts and nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-158278-S26418525492003091900000).
  5. Install both gravel shields under vehicle. Remove engine support. (Scheme 26)
  6. Fill transaxle with appropriate transaxle fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-158278-S35247322002003091900000) and «FLUID CAPACITIES»(ref-158278-S36119479822003091900000) under LUBRICATION.
  7. Drive vehicle and check shift points, shift schedule and shift quality.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove console.
  2. Remove 4 shift selector panel screws. Raise selector panel, disconnect connector and remove O/D switch terminals.
  3. Raise selector panel and remove shift indicator light bulb. Remove connector from selector indicator light bulb unit.
  4. Remove 2 selector knob screws. Remove selector knob. Remove selector lever sleeve while holding knob in one hand.
  5. Remove entire selector panel and connector assembly.
  6. Release terminal tabs using a flat blade screwdriver. Remove O/D switch terminals from connector.
  7. Feed O/D switch wires through panel and sleeve. (Scheme 28)

  1. Feed wires through sleeve and panel. Insert wires into connector. Install panel.
  2. Install sleeve over shift selector lever. Adjust wires (from bottom of sleeve) until shift selector knob can be set in place. NOTE: Wires must go through groove in shift selector knob.
  3. Install 2 shift selector knob screws. Install light bulb.
  4. Install connector and secure wires in provided plastic molding slots. (Scheme 29)
  5. Install panel mounting screws.

Removal & Installation

  1. Remove drive shaft. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  2. Remove oil seal with a screwdriver.
  3. Tap a NEW oil seal into the case with appropriate oil seal installer tool. (Scheme 30) Tap until the tool contacts the case. Coat oil seal lip with transaxle fluid.
  4. Install drive shaft. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
