  1. Disconnect negative battery cable then positive battery cable.
  2. Raise and properly support vehicle.
  3. Place a drain pan under transaxle drain plug.
  4. Remove transaxle drain plug and allow transaxle fluid to fully drain.
  5. Pull data link connector upward from mass air flow sensor.
  6. To remove air cleaner assembly, disconnect hose from intake manifold, air temperature sensor connector, MAF sensor connector, then remove two air cleaner assembly mounting bolts and one nut. (Scheme 1)
  7. Remove three No. 4 engine mounting nuts and loosen engine mounting bolt. (Scheme 2)
  8. Disconnect input/turbine speed sensor connector. (Scheme 2)
  9. Remove ground strap bolt from top of transaxle and disconnect ground strap. (Scheme 3)
  10. Disconnect vehicle speed sensor connector from right side of transaxle. (Scheme 4)
  11. Remove U-clip from selector cable to transaxle linkage. (Scheme 5)
  12. Remove nut and washer from transaxle linkage. (Scheme 5)
  13. Disconnect transaxle range switch connector.
  14. Disconnect solenoid valve connector.
  15. Disconnect crankshaft position sensor connector. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector. (Scheme 6).
  16. Disconnect two ATF cooler hoses. (Scheme 7)
  17. Remove top upper two torque converter housing bolts. (Scheme 8)
  18. Support engine using Special Service Tool (0K201 170 AA0) or equivalent. (Scheme 9)
  19. Remove both front wheels.
  20. Remove both gravel shields from under engine (seven bolts each).
  21. Remove two nuts and U-clip from catalytic converter. Remove five nuts (three front, two rear), then remove catalytic converter. (Scheme 10)
  22. Remove converter housing access cover and remove four drive plate-to-torque converter mounting nuts. Rotate engine at crank pulley to gain access to all four nuts. (Scheme 11)
  23. Remove two starter bolts and pull starter away. NOTE: Suspend starter so there is no tension on the wire harness.
  24. Remove four engine oil pan-to-transaxle mounting bolts. (Scheme 12)
  25. Remove both right and left tie rod ends from steering knuckles by removing one cotter pin and one nut each.
  26. Remove stabilizer control link bolt and nut from both right and left stabilizer control link and remove stabilizer control link. (Scheme 13)
  27. Remove pinch bolt and nut from both right and left ball joint. Separate ball joints from control arms.
  28. Remove two nuts from No. 2 engine mount-to-mounting member. Remove engine mounting member-to-chassis bolts (two front) and nuts (two rear) and remove engine mounting member. (Scheme 14)
  29. Remove joint shaft support bracket from engine block (three bolts).
  30. Gently pry both drive shafts from transaxle. (Scheme 15)
  31. Install Special Service Tool (0K201 270 014/K94A-4208-AT) to prevent side gear from becoming misaligned. (Scheme 16)
  32. Remove three No. 1 engine mounting-to-chassis bolts. (Scheme 17)
  33. Remove three No. 2 engine mounting bolts, then remove No. 2 engine mounting from transaxle. (Scheme 18)
  34. Support (and secure, if possible) auto transaxle with a transaxle jack or suitable floor jack. (Scheme 19)
  35. Remove two remaining torque converter housing bolts. (Scheme 20)
  36. Slowly lower drivetrain, allowing transaxle to tilt toward ground.
  37. Gently separate transaxle from engine and pull unit out through wheel well.

  1. Set transaxle on transaxle jack or suitable floor jack and place under vehicle.
  2. Raise transaxle and align with engine.
  3. Connect transaxle to engine using four mounting bolts to pull together; two on top and two on side. (Scheme 21) Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  4. Remove floor jack from transaxle.
  5. Remove Special Service Tool (0K201 270 014/K94A-4208-AT). (Scheme 16)
  6. Install No. 2 engine mounting to transaxle and install three bolts. (Scheme 18)
  7. Install four drive plate-to-torque converter mounting nuts. Rotate engine at crank pulley to gain access to all four nuts. (Scheme 11) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  8. Install four engine oil pan-to-transaxle mounting bolts and install access cover. (Scheme 12) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  9. Install starter and ground strap.
  10. Install three No. 1 engine mounting-to-chassis bolts. (Scheme 17) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  11. Install new clips on drive shaft.
  12. Push drive shaft and joint shaft into transaxle with opening of clips pointing upward. (Scheme 22)
  13. Install joint shaft support bracket and install three bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  14. Install right and left lower ball joints into spindle and install pinch bolts. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  15. Install both right and left stabilizer control links. (Scheme 13) Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  16. Install both right and left tie rod ends to steering knuckles and install tie rod end nuts. Tighten nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  17. Insert cotter pin. Bend cotter pin over.
  18. Install engine mounting member-to-chassis bolts (two front) and nuts (two rear). (Scheme 14) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  19. Install two nuts to No. 2 engine mount-to-mounting member. (Scheme 14) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  20. Install catalytic converter. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  21. Install U-clip to catalytic converter and tighten two nuts. (Scheme 10)
  22. Install both gravel shields under engine and tighten bolts (seven bolts each).
  23. Install both right and left wheels and tighten lug nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  24. Lower vehicle. Remove Special Service Tool (0K201 170 AA0) or equivalent. (Scheme 9)
  25. Slide ATF inlet and outlet hose onto ATF cooler pipe until it is fully seated against the ridge.
  26. Install hose clamp onto hose at center of mark and at angle shown. (Scheme 23)
  27. Connect oxygen sensor connector. Connect crankshaft position sensor connector. (Scheme 6)
  28. Connect solenoid valve connector.
  29. Connect transaxle range switch connector.
  30. Install washer and nut to transaxle linkage and tighten nut. (Scheme 5) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000). Insert U-clip.
  31. Connect vehicle speed sensor connector. Connect input/turbine speed sensor connector. (Scheme 2)
  32. Install No. 4 engine mounting and tighten three nuts and bolt. (Scheme 2) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-155127-S28898886142003060900000).
  33. Install air cleaner assembly.
  34. Connect air temperature sensor connector.
  35. Connect MAF sensor connector. Insert diagnosis connector.
  36. Connect positive, then negative battery cable.
  37. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. See appropriate SERVICING article. Adjust transaxle control cable. See ADJUSTMENTS in appropriate SERVICING article.
