Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid
TCM controls TCC lock-up by delivering an output signal to TCC solenoid. TCC solenoid is activated when gearshift lever is in "D" position, engine is at normal operating temperature and vehicle is at specified speed. TCC solenoid is located on transaxle valve body.
SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS
Ensure engine and transaxle is at normal operating temperature. Road test vehicle with transaxle gearshift lever in gear specified in shift table. Apply throttle and observe speeds at which upshift and downshift occurs and torque converter is applied. See SHIFT SPEED SPECIFICATIONS table. If shift points are not within specification, see SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

TORQUE CONVERTER FRONT CHAMBER PRESSURE
Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove front chamber access plug through front of engine support crossmember. Screw pressure port adapter in to front chamber port and attach to pressure gauge. Disconnect transaxle connector. Start engine. Shift transaxle to "D" and raise vehicle speed to 40-50 MPH. Go to next step.
- While maintaining vehicle speed, connect a fused jumper wire from transaxle connector terminal No. 2 to battery positive terminal. Observe front chamber pressure. Pressure should drop in 2 stages within 2 seconds of TCC being energized. With TCC solenoid off, front chamber pressure should be 88-92 psi (12.8-13.3 kPa). With TCC solenoid on, front chamber pressure should be 30-38 psi (4.4-5.5 kPa). If pressure is not within specification, go to next step.
- Remove transaxle drain pan. Remove TCC solenoid from valve body. Attach a hose to TCC solenoid nipple and blow through hose. Air should not escape through solenoid. Attach a jumper wire from solenoid body to ground. Attach a fused jumper wire from solenoid terminal to battery positive. Blow through hose. Air should escape through solenoid. If solenoid does not function as specified, replace TCC solenoid. If solenoid functions as specified, replace valve body.
