Transmission Fluid Checking
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the PDU to the vehicle.
- Measure the transmission fluid temperature. Switch on the PDU and select 'Diagnostics'. Enter the chassis number and other vehicle details. Select 'Toolbox'. From the 'Toolbox' menu select 'Powertrain'. Connect the Multi Protocol Adaptor (MPA) and Download cable to the PDU and base station. Allow the PDU to load. Select 'Datalogger' from the menu. Disconnect the PDU from the base station and connect to the vehicle. With the J-Gate shift selector in the Park position (P), select 'Enter' to start the 'Datalogger'. Select the Transmission Oil Temperature 2 (TOT2) from the main menu. The reading tolerance is from 80 °F to 120 °F, nominally 100 °F. If the value is greater than 120 °F the vehicle MUST be left to cool down. If the value is less than 80 °F then the vehicle MUST be driven slowly for approximately 500 meters at a time, checking that the PID reading is within the range specified. The target temperature when putting the vehicle on the ramp is 90 °F
- Prepare to measure the transmission fluid temperature. Start the engine and make sure the transmission fluid temperature is still within tolerance. With the engine running and the foot brake applied move the J-Gate shift selector through 'P-R-N-D-4-3-2' and back to 'P' making sure that 'R' and 'D' have been selected on both occasions. Select 'P' with the engine idling. Raise the vehicle with the engine idling and carry out the transmission fluid level check.
- Carry out the transmission fluid level check. Remove the extension housing fill plug and the transmission fluid level plug. Place a suitable 1 liter container below the fluid level plug to retrieve any excess oil. The transmission fluid level will be either under or overfilled from the nominal condition. If the vehicle is under filled only a few drips will occur. Oil must be added through the extension housing fill plug. Do not fill with more than 250 ml at a time until the fluid flows in a continuous stream. Install the transmission fluid level plug as soon as the stream starts to break up into drips. If the vehicle is slightly overfilled fluid should flow in a continuous red stream. Install the transmission fluid level plug as soon as the stream starts to break up into drips. If more than 250 ml is retrieved go to the excessive overfill procedure below. If the vehicle is excessively overfilled the fluid will appear almost pink rather than deep red as it flows, and more than 250 ml of fluid will be retrieved in the container. When all of the excess fluid has drained, install the fluid level plug. Switch the engine off for 30 minutes. By this time the fluid in the container should be a deep red color. If not, wait for another 30 minutes. Restart the engine then remove the fluid level plug. Add oil through the extension housing fill plug. Add no more than 250 ml at time until the fluid flows in a continuous stream. Install the transmission fluid level plug as soon as the stream starts to break up into drips.
- Install the extension housing fill plug and fluid level plug.
- Remove any excess transmission fluid.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Switch of the engine.
- Remove the PDU.
Fluid Pump
- The fluid pump provides the fluid pressure necessary to charge the torque converter, main control assembly, transmission cooling system, lubrication system and apply devices.
- The fluid pump is a positive displacement, gear type pump. The fluid pump is driven by the torque converter impeller hub.
Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor
- The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is a thermistor-type sensor that varies a reference voltage signal. The resistance in the TFT varies with temperature. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the voltage signal across the TFT, and uses this information to determine the transmission fluid temperature.
- The TFT is located on the solenoid body.
- The PCM uses the TFT signal to help determine shift scheduling, torque converter clutch operation and pressure control requirements.
It sends a voltage signal to the powertrain control module. The voltage signal varies with transmission fluid temperature. The PCM uses this signal to determine whether a cold start shift schedule is necessary. The shift schedule is compensated when the transmission fluid temperature is cold. The PCM also inhibits torque converter clutch (TCC) operation at low transmission fluid temperatures and use to determine pressure control (PC) solenoid operations.
