REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See appropriate COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  2. Drain transmission fluid through drain plug.
  3. Remove front exhaust pipe and center exhaust pipe.
  4. Remove rear drive shaft. See appropriate DIFFERENTIALS article in DRIVELINE/DIFFERENTIALS.
  5. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  6. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.
  7. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine causes of malfunction. If transmission fluid is very dark, smells burned, or contains foreign particles, the frictional material (clutches, bands) may need replacement. A tacky film that will not wipe clean indicates varnish build up. Varnish can cause valves, servo, and clutches to stick and can inhibit pump pressure. NOTE: If frictional material is detected, replace radiator after repair of A/T.
  8. Support transmission with transmission jack. When setting transmission jack, place wooden blocks to prevent from damaging control valve with TCM and transmission case.
  9. Remove rear engine crossmember. (Scheme 2)
  10. Remove tightening bolts from rear extension assembly and transmission case. (Scheme 3)
  11. Tap output shaft and companion flange complement with soft hammer.
  12. Remove output shaft and companion flange complement from transmission case. (With needle bearing.) See
  13. Disconnect revolution sensor connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 4)
  14. Straighten terminal clips to free sensor harness then remove clips.
  15. Remove revolution sensor from transmission case. (Scheme 5) CAUTION: DO NOT subject sensor to impact by dropping or hitting it. DO NOT disassemble. DO NOT allow metal filings, etc., to get on the sensor's front edge metallic area. DO NOT place in an area affected by magnetism.

Installation

CAUTIONAfter completing installation, check for transmission fluid leakage and fluid level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS .

  1. Install revolution sensor in transmission case with bolt. (Scheme 5) Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).
  2. Connect revolution sensor connector. (Scheme 4)
  3. Securely fasten revolution sensor harness with clips.
  4. Apply recommended sealant to rear extension assembly as shown (Scheme 6) Completely remove all moisture, oil and old sealant from transmission case and rear extension assembly mounting surfaces.
  5. Install rear extension assembly to transmission case. (With needle bearing.) (Scheme 3)
  6. Tighten output shaft and companion flange complement mounting bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000). (Because terminal bracket is tightened together with output shaft and companion flange, it should be installed before procedure 5.) DO NOT reuse self-sealing bolts. See.
  7. Install rear engine member. (Scheme 2) Tighten to specification.
  8. Install oil pan to transmission case using the following steps Install oil pan gasket to oil pan. DO NOT reuse oil pan gasket. Install it in the direction to align hole positions. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket from oil pan mounting surface. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to transmission case. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown. Use care to not pinch electrical harnesses. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to specification in sequence shown after temporarily tightening them. (Scheme 7) DO NOT reuse oil pan mounting bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).
  9. Install drain plug to oil pan. DO NOT reuse drain plug gasket. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).
  10. Connect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  11. Install rear drive shaft. See appropriate DIFFERENTIALS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  12. Install front exhaust pipe and center exhaust pipe.
  13. Connect negative battery terminal.
  14. Pour new transmission fluid into transmission case. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-166940-S18238569252004100100000).

Removal

Note. Manufacturer refers to valve body assembly as control valve assembly.

CAUTIONWhen replacing the control valve assembly it may be necessary to erase EEPROM in TCM. See appropriate DIAGNOSIS - RE5R05A article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

  1. Disconnect negative battery terminal.
  2. Drain transmission fluid through drain plug.
  3. Disconnect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  4. Remove oil pan and oil pan gasket.
  5. Remove magnets from oil pan.
  6. Check foreign materials in oil pan to help determine cause of malfunction.   7. Disconnect transmission assembly harness connector.
  8. Disconnect transmission fluid sensor No. 2 connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 8)
  9. Remove terminal cord assembly connectors from bracket. Use care to not damage connectors. (Scheme 9)
  10. Disconnect revolution sensor connector. Use care to not damage connector. (Scheme 10)
  11. Straighten terminal clips to free terminal cord assembly and revolution sensor harness then remove terminal clips. Hand down terminal cord assembly and revolution sensor harness toward outside so as not to disturb removal of control valve assembly.
  12. Remove bolts "A", "B" and "C" from control valve with TCM. (Scheme 11)
  13. Remove control valve with TCM from transmission case. When removing, be careful with the manual valve notch and manual plate height. Remove it vertically. (Scheme 12)
  14. Remove transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 with bracket from control valve with TCM. (Scheme 13)
  15. Remove bracket from transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2.
CAUTIONAfter completing installation, check transmission fluid leakage and fluid level. See CHECKING FLUID LEVELS .

  1. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 to bracket.
  2. Install transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 (with bracket) in control valve with TCM. Tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000). (Scheme 13)
  3. Install control valve with TCM in transmission case using the following steps: Install control valve assembly in transmission case. CAUTION: Hang down sensor harness toward outside so as not to disturb installation of control valve with TCM. Ensure that turbine revolution sensor securely installs in sensor hole. (Scheme 14) Assemble it so that manual valve cutout is engaged with manual plate projection. (Scheme 12) Install bolts "A", "B", and "C" in control valve assembly. (Scheme 11) See «CONTROL VALVE BOLT IDENTIFICATION»(ref-166940-S07940055702004092700000). CONTROL VALVE BOLT IDENTIFICATION Bolt Symbol Length - In. (mm) Number of Bolts "A" 1.65 (42.0) 5 "B" 2.17 (55.0) 6 "C" 1.57 (40.0) 1 Tighten bolt 1, 2, and 3 temporarily to prevent dislocation. (Scheme 11) After that tighten in order (1, 2, and 3), and then tighten remaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).
  4. Install terminal cord assembly connectors in bracket. (Scheme 9)
  5. Connect terminal cord assembly connectors.
  6. Connect transmission fluid temperature sensor No. 2 connector. (Scheme 8)
  7. Connect revolution sensor connector. (Scheme 10)
  8. Securely fasten revolution sensor harness with terminal clips.
  9. Install magnets in oil pan.
  10. Install oil pan to transmission case using the following steps: Install oil pan gasket to oil pan. DO NOT reuse oil pan gasket. Install it in the direction to align hole positions. Completely remove all moisture, oil and old gasket from oil pan mounting surface. Install oil pan (with oil pan gasket) to transmission case. Install it so that drain plug comes to the position as shown. Use care to not pinch electrical harnesses. Tighten oil pan mounting bolts to specification in sequence shown after temporarily tightening them. (Scheme 7) DO NOT reuse oil pan mounting bolts. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).
  11. Install drain plug to oil pan. Tighten to specification. DO NOT reuse drain plug gasket.
  12. Pour transmission fluid into transmission assembly. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-166940-S18238569252004100100000).
  13. Connect heated oxygen sensor No. 2 harness connector.
  14. Connect negative battery terminal.
