Transmission

Note. The transmission fluid level cannot be read accurately if the vehicle has been driven for an extended period at high speeds, or in city traffic in hot weather, or it is being used to pull a trailer. Wait about 30 minutes or until fluid has cooled down before checking fluid level.

Scheme 18

Scheme 18: Transmission
  1. Warm up engine.
  2. Check for fluid leakage.
  3. Remove tightening bolt transmission fluid level gauge.
  4. Before driving, fluid level can be checked at fluid temperatures of 86-122°F (30-50°C) using COLD range on dipstick as follows: Park vehicle on level surface and set parking brake. Start engine and move gearshift lever through each gear position. Place gearshift lever in "P" position. Check fluid level with engine idling. Remove dipstick and wipe clean with lint-free paper. Insert dipstick into fill pipe as far as it will go. Remove dipstick and note reading. If reading is at low side of range, add fluid through fill tube. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-166940-S13442845532004100100000). Do not overfill.
  5. Drive vehicle for about 5 minutes in urban areas.
  6. Recheck fluid level at fluid temperature of approximately 149°F (65°C). NOTE: Fluid level will be greatly affected by temperature as shown in figure (Scheme 18) Therefore, be certain to perform operation while checking data with CONSULT-II as follows: Connect CONSULT-II to data link connector. Select "MAIN SIGNALS" in "DATA MONITOR" mode for "A/T" with CONSULT-II. Read out value of "ATF TEMP 1".
  7. Recheck fluid level at temperatures of approximately 149°F (65°C) using "HOT" range on dipstick.
  8. Check fluid condition. If fluid is very dark or smells burned, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. Flush cooling system after repair of transmission. If transmission fluid contains frictional material (clutches, bands, etc.), replace radiator and flush cooler line using cleaning solvent and compressed air after repair of transmission. See RADIATOR.
  9. Install removed transmission dipstick in fill pipe. Tighten dipstick retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).

M45 use genuine Nissan Matic "J" ATF. Also, refer to Technical Service Bulletin INFINITI; SPECIAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID REQUIREMENT .

  1. Warm up transmission fluid.
  2. Stop engine.
  3. Remove retaining bolt for transmission dipstick.
  4. Remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain. Refill with new transmission fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-166940-S13442845532004100100000) . Reinstall drain plug. Tighten drain plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000) . Always refill same volume with drained fluid using the following steps: To replace transmission fluid, pour in new fluid in fill pipe with the engine idling and at the same time drain the old fluid from the radiator cooler hose return side. When the fluid coming out is about the same color of the new fluid, the replacement is complete. The amount of new transmission fluid to use should be about 30 to 50 percent of stipulated amount.
  5. Run engine at idle speed for 5 minutes.
  6. Check fluid level and condition. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVELS»(ref-166940-S26705963852004100100000) .
  7. Install transmission dipstick in fill pipe. Tighten dipstick retaining bolt to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000) .

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Various components may be serviced without transmission removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH

See SHIFT LINKAGE .

Scheme 19

Scheme 19: SHIFT LINKAGE
  1. Loosen nut of control rod. (Scheme 19)
  2. Place PNP switch and selector lever in "P" position.
  3. While pressing lower lever toward rear of vehicle (in "P" position direction), tighten nut to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-166940-S03992750412004100100000).

VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR

Manufacturer refers to vehicle speed sensor as revolution sensor. For removal & installation procedures, see REVOLUTION SENSOR .
