PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
Note. When installing and adjusting transaxle range switch, ensure switch "O" ring is not dislodged.
- Apply parking brake and place gear selector in Neutral.
- Loosen the manual control lever lock nut to separate the cable and lever. (Scheme 16)
- Place the manual control level in "N" position and loosen the transaxle range switch attaching bolts.
- Rotate the transaxle range switch body until the 0.047" (12 mm) wide arm of the manual control lever aligns with the flange on the switch body. (Scheme 17)
- When aligned the attaching bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168305-S41077033512004110400000). Ensure switch does not move when tightening.
- Adjust the flange nut so that there is no slack in the control cable. (Scheme 18) Ensure control lever operates smoothly.
- Run vehicle and confirm that the transaxle is set in each range when the selector lever is shifted to each position.

Possible Cause
- Battery charge low.
- Battery cables loose, corroded or worn.
- Transaxle range switch faulty (Vehicle with automatic transaxle only).
- Fusible link blown.
- Starter motor faulty.
- Ignition switch faulty.
Possible Correction
- Replace battery.
- Repair or replace cables.
- Adjust or replace switch. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-168305-S08936825142004110400000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
- Replace fusible link.
- Replace or repair starter motor.
- Replace ignition switch.
- Battery charge low.
- Battery cables loose.
- Starter motor faulty.
- Charge or replace battery.
- Inspect and repair wiring as necessary.
- Replace or repair starter motor.
- Starter motor faulty.
- Ignition wiring faulty.
- Replace or repair starter motor.
- Inspect and repair wiring as necessary.
- Short in wiring.
- Pinion gear teeth broken or starter motor faulty.
- Ring gear teeth broken.
- Inspect and repair wiring as necessary.
- Replace or repair starter motor.
- Replace flywheel ring gear or torque converter.
- Disconnect park/neutral position switch harness connector. Ensure continuity exists between terminals No. 7 and 8 when shift lever is in Park and Neutral. (Scheme 19)
- If continuity does not exist, check park/neutral position switch adjustment. See «PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH»(ref-168305-S08936825142004110400000) under ADJUSTMENTS. If park/neutral position switch adjustment is okay, replace park/neutral switch.

SOLENOID TESTS
| CAUTION | Perform solenoid tests in less than 10 seconds to prevent solenoid coil damage. |
Pull-In Test
Disconnect field coil wire from starter solenoid terminal "M". Connect 12 volt battery between starter solenoid terminals "S" and "M". (Scheme 20) Solenoid plunger should pull in, extending pinion drive. If pinion drive moves outward, pull-in coil is good. If pinion drive does not move outward, replace solenoid. See OVERHAUL.

Hold-In Test
Disconnect field coil wire from starter solenoid terminal "M". Apply battery voltage to starter solenoid terminal "S" of solenoid and ground starter case. (Scheme 21) Solenoid plunger should pull in. If pinion drive remains out when plunger is pulled in, hold-in circuit is good. If pinion drive moves in or moves back and forth repeatedly, hold-in circuit is open. Replace solenoid. See OVERHAUL.

Continuity Check
- Check Armature For Shorting - Check continuity between commutator and armature coil core. (Scheme 22) No continuity should exist. Replace armature if continuity exists. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).
- Check Armature For An Open - Check continuity between individual brush segments at commutator end of armature. (Scheme 22) Continuity should exist between each individual brush segment. Replace armature if no continuity exists on any brush segment. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).

Checking Runout & Diameter
- Check Armature Runout - Support armature with "V" blocks positioned at each bearing end of armature. Using a dial indicator check armature runout at center of commutator and at end of armature. (Scheme 23) For specification, see «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168305-S21087773842004110400000). Replace armature if armature runout exceeds specification. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).
- Measure Armature Diameter - Using a caliper, measure commutator outside diameter at center of commutator. (Scheme 24) For specification, see «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-168305-S21087773842004110400000). Replace armature if commutator outside diameter is not within specification. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).

Checking Insulator Depth
Measure insulator depth between commutator segments. (Scheme 25) For specification, see STARTER SPECIFICATIONS. Replace armature if insulator depth is not within specification. See OVERHAUL.

OVERRUNNING CLUTCH
- While holding clutch housing, rotate drive pinion. Drive pinion should rotate smoothly in one direction, but not in the reverse direction. (Scheme 26)Replace overrunning clutch if operation is not as specified. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).
- Visually inspect drive pinion. If drive pinion is worn or burred, replace overrunning clutch. If drive pinion is damaged, also check ring gear for wear or burrs. See «OVERHAUL»(ref-168305-S13851095262004110400000).
