TORQUE CONVERTOR CLUTCH ENGAGEMENT TEST
Note. Torque converter operations test verifies torque converter and torque converter clutch control system are operating correctly.
- Connect a tachometer to engine. Bring engine and transaxle to normal operating temperature by driving vehicle at highway speeds for 15 minutes in overdrive. After normal operating temperature is reached, maintain a speed of about 50 MPH and tap brake pedal while monitoring tachometer display.
- Engine RPM should increase when brake pedal is tapped, and decrease about 5 seconds after brake pedal is released. If test results are not as specified or if vehicle stalls in overdrive or manual "2" at idle with vehicle at a stop, move gear selector lever to manual "1" position. If vehicle stalls in manual "1" position, see torque converter related concerns in «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)»(ref-140739-S13764232212002052800000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS & TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID
Note. Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated and in good condition before proceeding.
Note. See OUTPUT STATE CONTROL MODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM for additional information.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect NGS tester to DLC. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, select the following commands: DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK PCM ACTIVE COMMAND CODES OUTPUT STATE CONTROL TRANS-BENCH MODE If vehicle enters TRANS-BENCH MODE, remain in TRANS-BENCH MODE and go to next step. If vehicle does not enter TRANS-BENCH MODE, repeat procedures to enter TRANS-BENCH MODE. If procedures fail again, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE for diagnosis of PCM.
- Perform procedures as follows: Select PIDs to be monitored (SSA, SSB, SSC, SSD and SSE). Press SEND. Wiggle all wiring and connectors to transaxle. Monitor solenoid state(s) for changes. Select OFF to turn solenoid(s) off. Press SEND. If suspect solenoid(s) fault state changes, repair suspect solenoid circuit(s) and retest system operation. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-140739-S12638666632002052800000). If suspect solenoid(s) fault state does not change, go to next step.
- Using NGS tester, turn each solenoid on and off. If solenoid(s) turns on and off and solenoid activation can be heard, go to next step. If solenoid(s) does not turn on and off and solenoid activation cannot be heard, go to step 5.
- Perform OSC TRANS-DRIVE MODE. Select GEAR for shift solenoids or follow procedures for GEAR in DRIVE MODE under «OUTPUT STATE CONTROL MODES»(ref-140739-S38433827752002052800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Select TCC for torque converter clutch. Follow procedures for TCC in DRIVE MODE under «OUTPUT STATE CONTROL MODES»(ref-140739-S38433827752002052800000). If transaxle upshifts/downshifts or torque converter engages/disengages when commanded, clear all DTCs and road test vehicle to verify concern is still present. If concern is still present, see «SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS (ELECTRONIC)»(ref-140739-S13764232212002052800000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING to diagnose shift or torque converter concern. If transaxle does not upshift/downshift or torque converter does not engage/disengage when commanded, go to next step.
- Disconnect transaxle 9-pin harness connector. Visually inspect all wires and connectors for damage. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector (harness side) terminals No. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9. (Схема №11) If any voltage is present, go to step 7. If no voltage is present, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector (harness side) terminals No. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9. If resistances are greater than 10 k/ohms, go to step 8. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in appropriate wire(s) and retest system operation.
- Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector (harness side) terminals No. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9. If any voltage is present, repair short to power in appropriate wire(s) and retest system operation. If no voltage is present, replace PCM and retest system operation. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-140739-S04064839672002052800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Install EEC-V breakout box. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between specified terminals. See «SHIFT SOLENOID CIRCUIT CONTINUITY TEST»(ref-140739-S34301072892002052800000) table. If all resistances measured are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate wire(s) and retest system operation. - Connect PCM 104-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between ground and transaxle 9-pin harness connector (harness side) terminal(s) No. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9 for suspect solenoid(s). Using NGS tester, select TRANS-BENCH MODE. Select parameter SSA, SSB, SSC, SSD and/or SSE. Measure voltage of suspect solenoid(s) again while cycling appropriate solenoid(s) on and off with NGS tester. To cycle suspect solenoid(s), select ON, then press SEND. Select OFF, then press SEND. If voltage reading(s) changed, go to next step. If voltage reading(s) did not change, replace PCM and retest system operation. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-140739-S04064839672002052800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.

If resistance(s) is as specified and SSA and/or SSB are suspect, go to step 12. If resistance(s) is as specified and SSC, SSD and/or SSE are suspect, go to next step. If resistance(s) is not as specified, replace appropriate solenoid(s) and retest system operation. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
