Inspection and Verification
| WARNING | Always allow the engine to cool before opening the cooling system. Do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap when the engine is operating or the cooling system is hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. Always fill the cooling system with the manufacturer's specified coolant. Chemically flush the cooling system if a non-specified coolant has been used. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING . Failure to follow these instructions may damage the engine or cooling system.
Note. The cooling system is filled with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Do not mix coolant types. Mixing coolant types degrades the corrosion protection of the coolant. Failure to follow these instructions may damage the engine or cooling system.
Note. During normal vehicle operation, Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant may change color from orange to pink or light red. As long as the engine coolant is clear and uncontaminated, this color change does not indicate the engine coolant has degraded nor does it require the engine coolant to be drained, the system to be flushed, or the engine coolant to be replaced.
Note. Vehicles have a pressure relief cap on the degas bottle and no radiator cap.
- Verify the customer concern.
- Visually check the engine coolant level at the degas bottle when the system is cold.
- Make sure the pressure relief cap is installed correctly.
- Record any cooling system DTCs retrieved. Refer to the «DTC CHART»(ref-569571-S00057751162013072700000) for DTC descriptions.
- NOTE: Take note of any coolant odor or steam coming from cooling system components. If the system coolant is filled correctly and no DTCs associated with fail-safe cooling are retrieved, verify the customer concern by operating the engine to duplicate the condition.
- NOTE: For engine specific information, refer to «SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-569571-S10338145452013072700000) . Visually inspect for obvious signs of any mechanical or electrical concerns damage. - If the inspection reveals an obvious concern that can be readily identified, repair it as necessary. Test the system for normal operation.
- NOTE: The engine cooling system is filled with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Do not mix coolant types. Mixing coolant types degrades the corrosion protection of the coolant. Failure to follow these instructions may damage the engine or cooling system. NOTE: During normal vehicle operation, Motorcraft Orange Antifreeze/Coolant may change color from orange to pink or light red. As long as the engine coolant is clear and uncontaminated, this color change does not indicate the engine coolant has degraded nor does it require the engine coolant to be drained, the system to be flushed, or the engine coolant to be replaced. Inspect the coolant condition. Inspect the coolant color. Discoloration may indicate that incorrect coolant may have been added to the system. Use of incorrect (green or yellow in color) coolant degrades the corrosion protection of Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Addition of Motorcraft® Specialty Green Engine Coolant may cause the color to appear to be a murky green-brown color. The addition of Motorcraft® Premium Gold Coolant, however, may not change the color or appearance of the orange colored coolant. Detection of contamination with Premium Gold Engine Coolant is determined by the presence of nitrite. If contamination with Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine Coolant is suspected, test the coolant with the 3-Way HD Antifreeze Coolant Test Kit. Follow the nitrite testing directions in the kit to determine if nitrite is present in the system. If nitrite is present, flush the system and refill with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING»(ref-569571-S25204489882013072700000) . A darker color with the presence of debris could indicate a commercially available stop leak may have been used and could result in loss of coolant flow to critical parts of the engine. If sediment is present in the coolant sample, flush the system and refill with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING»(ref-569571-S25204489882013072700000) . A light or reddish brown color or reddish brown particles indicate that rust may be present in the cooling system. Flush the system and refill with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING»(ref-569571-S25204489882013072700000) . An iridescent sheen on top of the coolant could indicate a trace of oil is entering the system. For information on engine diagnosis, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-569567) . A milky brown color may indicate that engine oil is entering the cooling system. Pressure test the cooling system. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM PRESSURE TEST»(ref-569571-S33195319392013072700000) . If engine oil is suspected, the cause of the leak may be internal to the engine. Refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-569567) . If the engine coolant appearance is acceptable, test the engine coolant freezing point range with the Coolant/Battery Refractometer. The coolant concentration should be maintained within 48% to 50%, which equates to a freeze point between -34°C (-30°F) and -37°C (-34°F). If the vehicle is driven in cold climates less than -37°C (-34°F), it may be necessary to increase the coolant concentration to get adequate freeze protection. Recommended coolant concentration is 48/52 to 50/50 (freeze protection -34°C (-30°F) and -37°C (-34°F)) engine coolant to distilled water. Maximum coolant concentration is 60/40 for cold weather areas. Minimum coolant concentration is 40/60 for warm weather areas. Adjust coolant range and level if necessary: If coolant is low, add Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant Prediluted. If the engine coolant tests too weak, remove some of the engine coolant and add Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant Concentrated until the readings are within acceptable levels. If the engine coolant tests strong, remove some of the engine coolant and add distilled water until the readings are within acceptable levels.
- If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause and test the system for normal operation before proceeding to the next step.
- NOTE: Make sure to use the latest scan tool software release. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- NOTE: The Vehicle Communication Module (VCM) LED prove out confirms power and ground from the DLC are provided to the VCM. If the scan tool does not communicate with the VCM: check the VCM connection to the vehicle. check the scan tool connection to the VCM. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-569552) to diagnose no power to the scan tool.
- If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle: verify the ignition key is in the ON position. verify the scan tool operation with a known good vehicle. refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-569552) to diagnose no response from the PCM.
- Carry out the network test. If the scan tool responds with no communication for one or more modules, refer to «MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK»(ref-569552) . If the network test passes, retrieve and record Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CMDTCs).
- Clear the CMDTCs and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
- If the DTCs recovered are related to the concern, go to the «DTC Chart»(ref-569571-S00057751162013072700000) . For all other PCM DTCs, refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) .
- If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-569571-S07636680972013072700000) .

- B12 CHECK COOLANT CONDITION Check the coolant for dirt, rust or contamination and check the coolant concentration. Is the coolant condition OK? Yes : GO to B13. No : FLUSH the engine cooling system. REFER to «COOLING SYSTEM FLUSHING»(ref-569571-S25204489882013072700000) .
- B13 CHECK THE ELECTRIC COOLING FAN OPERATION Start the engine. Place the climate control function selector in the MAX A/C position and the blower motor switch in the HI position. Did the electric cooling fan operate? Yes : For the 1.6L GTDI engine GO to B14. For all other engines GO to B16 No : DIAGNOSE the electric cooling fan operation. REFER to the «INTRODUCTION - GAS»(ref-532349-S12382043572013022200000) .
- B14 CHECK THE HEATER SHUT-OFF VALVE FOR BEING STUCK CLOSED Start the engine. Allow the engine to reach operating temperature. Visually inspect for coolant flow in the degas bottle. Is coolant flow present? Yes : GO to B15. No : INSTALL a new heater shut-off valve. Heater Shut-off Valve. Fill and bleed the cooling system. Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding. Repeat the pinpoint test step. If there is still no flow in the degas bottle check for blockage in the coolant hoses, heater core, or engine oil cooler. If no blockage is present install a new coolant pump. Coolant Pump - 1.6L GTDI.
- B15 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE FOR BEING STUCK CLOSED Start the engine or road test to duplicate the overheat condition. Feel the bypass coolant hose between the engine coolant bypass valve at the rear of the cylinder head and the thermostat housing. Is the bypass hose cool to the touch? Yes : Install a new engine coolant bypass valve. Engine Coolant Bypass Valve. No : GO to B17
- B16 CHECK THE COOLANT PUMP OPERATION Allow the engine to run for 30 minutes. Place the climate control function selector in the MAX HEAT position. Feel the heater outlet hose. Is the heater outlet hose hot? Yes : GO to B17. No : INSTALL a new coolant pump.
- B17 VISUALLY INSPECT THE THERMOSTAT Carry out «THERMOSTAT VISUAL INSPECTION»(ref-569571-S30106090382013072700000) . Is the thermostat damaged? Yes : INSTALL a new thermostat. No : INSTALL a new thermostat. If the engine still overheats, INSTALL a new radiator.
PINPOINT TEST C: THE ENGINE DOES NOT REACH NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE

- C1 CARRY OUT INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION Carry out the «INSPECTION AND VERIFICATION»(ref-569571-S37269910262013072700000) procedure. Were any concerns found? Yes : REPAIR as needed. No : GO to C2.
- C2 CHECK FOR PCM DTCS Ignition ON. Using a scan tool, perform the PCM self-test. Is DTC P0125 or P0128 present? Yes : For 1.6L GTDI engine GO to C3. For all other engines, GO to C4 . No : The cooling system is operational. If an inoperative engine temperature gauge is suspected, CHECK the engine temperature gauge operation. REFER to «INSTRUMENTATION, MESSAGE CENTER, AND WARNING CHIMES»(ref-569587) . If an inoperative climate control system is suspected, CHECK the climate control system operation. Refer to the appropriate Climate Control System article for the procedure. If any other DTCs are retrieved, REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) .
- C3 REVIEW THE PCM DTCS Check for DTC P26B7 or P26BD. Is DTC P26B7 or P26BD present? Yes : For DTC P26B7, GO to «PINPOINT TEST D»(ref-569571-S31243423762013072700000) . For DTC P26BD, GO to «PINPOINT TEST E»(ref-569571-S26461295192013072700000) . No : GO to C4
- C4 CHECK THE COOLANT LEVEL NOTE: Allow the engine to cool before checking the coolant level. Visually check the engine coolant level in the degas bottle. Is the engine coolant level within specification? Yes : For the 1.6L GTDI engine GO to C5. For all other engines GO to C7 No : GO to «PINPOINT TEST A»(ref-569571-S33109512852013072700000) to diagnose a coolant leak.
- C5 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE FOR BEING STUCK OPEN Start the engine. Allow engine to idle and reach operating temperature (if cold). Feel the coolant hose between the engine coolant bypass valve and the thermostat housing. Is the coolant hose hot? Yes : INSTALL a new engine coolant bypass valve. Engine Coolant Bypass Valve. No : GO to C6
- C6 CHECK THE ECT SENSOR OPERATION Using a scan tool, view PCM PIDs. Monitor the ECT temperature PID. Using an Infrared temperature gun measure and record the temperature of the coolant outlet housing at the rear of the cylinder head near the ECT sensor. Is the temperature reading similar to the ECT PID value? Yes : INSTALL a new thermostat. «Thermostat Housing - 1.6L GTDI»(ref-569571-S34184907782013072700000) No : INSTALL a new ECT sensor. Refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) .
- C7 CHECK THE CHT SENSOR OPERATION Using a scan tool, view PCM PIDs. Monitor the CHT temperature PID. Using an Infrared temperature gun measure and record the temperature of the cylinder head near the CHT sensor. Is the temperature reading similar to the CHT PID value? Yes : INSTALL a new thermostat. Refer to «THERMOSTAT HOUSING - 2.0L GTDI»(ref-569571-S33582063442013072700000) , or «THERMOSTAT HOUSING - 2.5L»(ref-569571-S02870471332013072700000) No : INSTALL a new CHT sensor. Refer to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) .

- D2 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE RESISTANCE Disconnect: engine coolant bypass valve C1676. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1676-1 (engine coolant bypass valve component side) - C1676-2 (engine coolant bypass valve component side) - Is the resistance between 9-12 ohms? Yes : GO to D3. No : INSTALL a new engine coolant bypass valve. REFER to «ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE»(ref-569571-S31023596492013072700000) .
- D3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1676-2 CBB34 (VT/BN) - Ground Is voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to D4. No : VERIFY the BJB fuse 34 (10A) is OK. If the fuse is OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-541395) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- D4 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551E. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1676-1 CE148 (YE/GY) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to D5.
- D5 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Ignition OFF. Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1676-1 CE148 (YE/GY) - Ground Is the greater than 10, 000 ohms? Yes : GO to D6 No : REPAIR the circuit.
- D6 CHECK THE ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1676-1 CE148 (YE/GY) C1551E-18 CE148 (YE/GY) Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new engine coolant bypass valve. REFER to «ENGINE COOLANT BYPASS VALVE»(ref-569571-S31023596492013072700000) . CLEAR the DTC. TEST the system for normal operation. If the DTC is still present GO to D7 No : REPAIR the circuit.
- D7 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Ignition OFF. Disconnect and inspect all the PCM connectors. Repair: corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins) damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary Reconnect the PCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present. Is the concern still present? Yes : CHECK OASIS for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs). If a TSB exists for this concern, discontinue this test and follow TSB instructions. If no Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) address this concern, INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to «ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROLS»(ref-569601) . No : The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. Address the root cause of any connector or pin issues.

- E3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE HEATER SHUT-OFF VALVE Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1674-2 CBB34 (VT/BN) - Ground Is voltage greater than 11 volts? Yes : GO to E4. No : VERIFY the BJB fuse 34 (10A) is OK. If the fuse is OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the appropriate «SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-541395) to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
- E4 CHECK THE HEATER SHUT-OFF VALVE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO POWER Ignition OFF. Disconnect: PCM C1551E. Ignition ON. Measure the voltage between: Positive Lead Negative Lead Pin Circuit Pin Circuit C1674-1 CE149 (VT/OG) - Ground Is any voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. No : GO to E5.

Cooling System Pressure Test

The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury. |
Note. The engine cooling system is filled with Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant. Mixing coolant types degrades the corrosion protection of the coolant. Do not mix coolant types. Failure to follow these instructions may result in engine or cooling system damage.
Note. During normal vehicle operation, Motorcraft® Orange Antifreeze/Coolant may change color from orange to pink or light red. As long as the engine coolant is clear and uncontaminated, this color change does not indicate the engine coolant has degraded nor does it require the engine coolant to be drained, the system to be flushed, or the engine coolant to be replaced.
Note. Vehicles have a pressure relief cap on the degas bottle and no radiator cap.
Scheme 11
- Turn the engine OFF.
- Check the engine coolant level. Adjust the coolant level as necessary.
- Remove the degas bottle cap. Inspect the degas bottle cap and degas bottle for any issues that would cause improper sealing, such as for cross-threading, burrs, damaged o-ring, etc. If any issues are found, INSTALL a new cap and/or degas bottle.
- Attach the Pressure Tester and adaptor (Snap-On TA53 or equivalent), to the degas bottle cap. The cap must hold pressure of 145 kPa +/- 21 kPa (21 PSI +/- 3 PSI). If any issues are found, INSTALL a new cap.
- Attach the Pressure Tester and adaptor (Snap-On TA52, AST ASSFZ-47, Redline RDL95-0750 or equivalent) to the degas bottle.
- NOTE: Do not pressurize the cooling system beyond the maximum pressure listed in the «General Specifications»(ref-569571-S15869542292013090500000) table, or cooling system components can be damaged. NOTE: If the plunger of the pressure tester is pressed too fast, an erroneous pressure reading will result. To pressurize the engine cooling system, slowly press the plunger of the pressure test pump and increase the pressure to between 124 - 138 kPa (18-20 PSI). Observe the gauge reading for approximately 2 minutes. Pressure should not drop during this time. If the pressure drops within this time, inspect for leaks and repair as necessary.
- If no leaks are found and the pressure drops, the leak may be internal to the engine. Inspect the coolant for engine oil and the engine oil for coolant. Refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM - GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-569567) to diagnose the engine.
- If no leaks are found and the pressure does not drop, perform the COOLING SYSTEM PURGE AND FILL procedure to rid the cooling system of any air bubbles. Refer to «COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING, FILLING AND BLEEDING»(ref-569571-S38562264622013072700000) .
Thermostat Visual Inspection
- Remove the thermostat.
- Examine the thermostat for signs of damage including: Valve not fully seated (light visible through the valve) Foreign material lodged in the main valve Bent or broken frame or flange Bent or broken spring Bent or broken valve or valve stem Wax leaking from wax reservoir or a bulge in the reservoir Any other damage or distortion
- NOTE: If no damage is found during the inspection, do not attempt to open the thermostat using hot water or other heat sources. This method is not an accurate means to test the function of the thermostat and may damage the thermostat. If damage is found during the inspection, remove any foreign material or broken pieces and install a new thermostat.
- If no damage is found during the inspection, continue troubleshooting the system concern. Go to the «SYMPTOM CHART»(ref-569571-S07636680972013072700000) for further instructions.
Radiator Leak Test, Removed From Vehicle
Note. Never leak test an aluminum radiator in the same water that copper/brass radiators are tested in. Flux and caustic cleaners may be present in the cleaning tank and they will damage aluminum radiators.
Note. Always install plugs in the oil cooler fittings before leak testing or cleaning any radiator.
Note. Clean the radiator before leak testing to avoid contamination of tank.
Leak test the radiator in clean water with air pressurized to the maximum pressure listed in the specifications.
