Removal

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the ignition coil-on-plugs. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE IGNITION - 2.3L»(ref-232219) .
- Disconnect the crankcase vent hose.
- Remove the 3 engine cover studs.
- Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 14 valve cover retainers, the valve cover and gasket.

- Clean and inspect the sealing surfaces.
- Install the valve cover, gasket and retainers. Tighten in the sequence (Scheme 430)to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Connect the CHT sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the fuel rail pressure and temperature sensor electrical connector.
- Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
- Install the 3 engine cover studs.
- Connect the crankcase vent hose.

- Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at TDC. The hole in the crankshaft pulley should be in the 6 o'clock position.
- Install the special tool in the slots on the rear of both camshafts.
- Remove the engine plug bolt.
- Install the special tool.
- Install the special tools.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt, washer and crankshaft pulley.

- Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.
- Install a standard 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt through the crankshaft pulley and thread it into the front cover. Rotate the pulley as necessary to align the bolt holes.
- Using the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley in place, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt in 2 stages: Stage 1: Tighten to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
- Remove the 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt.
- Remove the special tool.
- Remove the special tool.
- Turn the engine 2 complete revolutions.
- Turn the crankshaft until the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
- Install the special tool.
- Using the 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt, check the position of the crankshaft pulley. If it is not possible to install the bolt, correct the engine timing.
- Using the special tool, check the position of the camshafts. If it is not possible to install the special tool, correct the engine timing.
- Remove the 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt.
- Install the engine plug bolt. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - HYBRID»(ref-232226) .
- Install the valve cover. For additional information, refer to «VALVE COVER»(ref-232196-S28771703582006051600000) .

- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
- Install the crankshaft pulley. For additional information, refer to «LOWER END COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-232196-S22918950382006051600000) and «CRANKSHAFT PULLEY»(ref-232196-S41896210942006051600000) .
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the engine. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE»(ref-232196-S08718195552006051600000) .
- Remove the 6 bolts and the flywheel.

- Install the flywheel and tighten the bolts in the sequence (Scheme 441)in the following 3 stages: Stage 1: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft). Stage 3: Tighten to 112 Nm (83 lb-ft).
- Install the engine. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE»(ref-232196-S08718195552006051600000).
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the flywheel. For additional information, refer to «FLYWHEEL»(ref-232196-S25848452972006051600000) .
- Remove the 17 bolts and the oil pan.
- Remove the 6 bolts and the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate.

- Using the special tool, position the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate onto the crankshaft.
- Install the crankshaft rear oil seal with retainer plate and bolts. Tighten in the sequence (Scheme 443)to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Clean and inspect all the oil pan and cylinder block mating surfaces.
- Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan. Install the oil pan. Install the 2 oil pan bolts finger-tight.
- Install the 4 bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the remaining oil pan bolts and tighten the oil pan bolts in the sequence see scheme 33to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the flywheel. For additional information, refer to «FLYWHEEL»(ref-232196-S25848452972006051600000).

- Remove and discard the CKP sensor.
- Remove the bolts and the engine front cover.

- Clean and inspect the mounting surfaces of the engine and the front cover.
- Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the cylinder head and oil pan joint areas. Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover.
- Install the engine front cover. Tighten the bolts in the sequence see scheme 45, to the following specifications: Tighten the 8-mm bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Tighten the 13-mm bolts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
- Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.
- Install a standard 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt through the crankshaft pulley and thread it into the front cover. Rotate the pulley as necessary to align the bolt holes.
- Using the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley in place, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt in 2 stages: Stage 1: Tighten to 100 Nm (74 lb-ft). Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
- Remove the 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt.
- Remove the special tool.
- Remove the special tool.
- Turn the engine 2 complete revolutions.

- Install the coolant pump pulley and the 3 bolts. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Install the CKP sensor. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
- Adjust the CKP sensor alignment jig. Tighten the bolts to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
- Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the 6 mm (0.23 in) x 18 mm (0.7 in) bolt.
- Install the engine plug bolt. Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - HYBRID»(ref-232226).

- Remove the RH timing chain guide.
- Remove the timing chain.
- Remove the bolts and the LH timing chain guide.
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft sprockets. Use the flats on the camshaft to prevent camshaft rotation.

- Install the camshaft sprockets and the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts at this time.
- Install the LH timing chain guide and the bolts. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Install the timing chain.
- Install the RH timing chain guide.
- Install the timing chain tensioner and the bolts. Remove the paper clip to release the piston. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Using the flats on the camshafts to prevent camshaft rotation, tighten the bolts. Tighten to 65 Nm (48 lb-ft).
- Clean and inspect the mounting surfaces of the engine and the front cover.
- Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the cylinder head and oil pan joint areas. Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the front cover.
- Install the engine front cover. Tighten the bolts in the sequence see scheme 79, to the following specifications: Tighten the 8-mm bolts to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Tighten the 13-mm bolts to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Position the power steering pump and install the bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the remaining 2 power steering pump bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Using the special tool, install the crankshaft front oil seal.
- Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.

- Remove the camshafts from the engine. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts in the sequence see scheme 97, one turn at a time. Repeat until all the tension is released. Remove the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the camshafts.

- Install the camshafts, bearing caps and special tool. Tighten the bolts in the sequence (Scheme 464)in 3 stages. Stage 1: Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts one turn at a time until finger-tight. Stage 2: Tighten to 7 Nm (62 lb-in). Stage 3: Tighten to 16 Nm (12 lb-ft).

- Unscrew the spark plug on cylinder No. 1 and connect the compressed air supply.
- Apply compressed air to the cylinder and remove the valve spring. Using the special tools, compress the valve spring and remove the valve collet, using some grease and a small screwdriver. Remove the valve spring retainer and the valve spring.
- Using the special tools, install the valve spring. Insert the valve spring and the valve spring retainer. Compress the valve spring and install the valve collet using some grease and a small screwdriver.
- Disconnect the compressed air supply and install the spark plug.
- Repeat the appropriate removal and installation steps for all of the other cylinders.
- Tighten the spark plugs to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- Coat the valve tappets with clean engine oil and insert them.
- Install the camshafts. For additional information, refer to «VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-232196-S29415280792006051600000) and «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-232196-S09045487892006051600000) .

- Tighten the spark plugs to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- Coat the valve tappets with clean engine oil and insert them.

- Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-232196-S21740448342006051600000) .
- Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-232210) .
- Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connector.
- Disconnect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the upper radiator hose, coolant bypass hose, heater hose and coolant vent hose from the engine coolant outlet.
- Remove the bolts and the and the cylinder head. Discard the bolts and the cylinder head gasket.

- Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surface of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions, and allow to set for several minutes. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any traces of oil or coolant, and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.
- Inspect the cylinder head for distortion. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE SYSTEM-GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-232214).
- Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the locations (Scheme 471)
- Install a new cylinder head gasket.
- Install new cylinder head bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence (Scheme 472)in the following 5 stages: Stage 1: Tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in). Stage 2: Tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft). Stage 3: Tighten to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Stage 4: Turn 90 degrees. Stage 5: Turn an additional 90 degrees.
- Connect the upper radiator hose, coolant bypass hose, heater hose and coolant vent hose to the engine coolant outlet.
- Connect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.
- Connect the EGR valve electrical connector.
- Install the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-232210).
- Install the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-232196-S21740448342006051600000).
- Install the camshafts. For additional information, refer to «VALVE TRAIN COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-232196-S29415280792006051600000) and «CAMSHAFTS»(ref-232196-S09045487892006051600000).
- Fill and bleed the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208).

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Loosen the oil filter drain plug.
- Using a cup-style oil filter wrench, loosen the oil filter cover one turn.
- Remove the oil filter drain plug and drain the engine oil from the oil filter and adapter. Remove and discard the oil filter drain plug O-ring seal.
- Remove the oil filter cover and oil filter element. Discard the oil filter element. Remove and discard the oil filter cover O-ring seal
- Wipe clean the oil filter cover and mounting surface on the oil filter adapter.
- Install a new oil filter cover O-ring seal.
- Install a new oil filter element and the oil filter cover. Using a cup-style oil wrench, tighten to 33 Nm (24 lb-ft).
- Install a new oil filter drain plug O-ring seal.
- Install the oil filter drain plug. Tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the oil filter element. For additional information, refer to «OIL FILTER ELEMENT»(ref-232196-S16566133512006051600000) .
- Remove the 5 bolts and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the oil filter adapter. To install, tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the 5 bolts and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Disconnect the oil pressure sender electrical connector.
- Remove the oil pressure sender. To install, tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Apply thread sealant with PTFE to the oil pressure sender threads.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Drain the engine oil, then install the drain plug. Tighten to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft).
- Remove the oil level indicator and tube. For additional information, refer to «OIL LEVEL INDICATOR AND TUBE»(ref-232196-S33187940022006051600000) .
- Remove the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER»(ref-232196-S11515415092006051600000) .
- Remove the 4 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts.
- Remove the 13 bolts and the oil pan.

- Clean and inspect all mating surfaces.
- Apply a 2.5 mm (0.09 in) bead of silicone gasket and sealant to the oil pan. Position the oil pan and install the 2 rear oil pan bolts finger-tight.
- Using a suitable straightedge, align the front surface of the oil pan flush with the front surface of the engine block.
- Install the remaining oil pan bolts. Tighten in the sequence see scheme 113to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the 4 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts. Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Install the engine front cover. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE FRONT COVER»(ref-232196-S11515415092006051600000).
- Install the oil level indicator and tube. For additional information, refer to «OIL LEVEL INDICATOR AND TUBE»(ref-232196-S33187940022006051600000).
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the oil pan. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE LUBRICATION COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-232196-S31602258832006051600000) .
- Remove the 2 bolts and the oil pump screen and pickup tube. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the 5 bolts and the RH splash shield. To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
- Remove the lower oil level indicator tube bolt. To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
- Remove the oil level indictor.
- Remove the upper bolt and the oil level indicator tube. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Remove and discard the oil level indicator tube O-ring seal.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. Lubricate a new O-ring seal with clean engine oil.
