- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Remove the engine coolant degas bottle. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208) .
- Remove the DC-to-DC converter. For additional information, refer to «HIGH VOLTAGE CONVERTER-INVERTER»(ref-232263) .
- Install the special tool.
- Remove the engine mount bracket bolt. To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
- Use the special tool to raise the engine 25 mm (0.98 in.).
- Remove the 3 nuts and the engine mount bracket. To install, tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).
- Remove the A/C tube bracket nut. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Rotate the A/C tube brackets off of the studs. Reposition the A/C tubes to access the engine mount bolt.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the engine mount. To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 lb-ft).
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208) .
- Drain the motor electronics cooling system. For additional information, refer to «TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232264) .
- Remove the intake manifold. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE MANIFOLD»(ref-232196-S21740448342006051600000) .
- Remove the engine air cleaner. For additional information, refer to «INTAKE AIR DISTRIBUTION AND FILTERING - HYBRID»(ref-232206) .
- Remove the catalytic converter. For additional information, refer to «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(ref-232210) .
- Remove the engine coolant degas bottle. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE COOLING - HYBRID»(ref-232208) .
- Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to «ACCESSORY DRIVE - HYBRID»(ref-232226) .
- Remove the LH front drive halfshaft. For additional information, refer to «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS»(ref-232197) .
- Remove the transfer case. For additional information, refer to «TRANSFER CASE-POWER TRANSFER UNIT (PTU)»(ref-232190) .
- Remove the front drive intermediate halfshaft. For additional information, refer to «FRONT DRIVE HALFSHAFTS»(ref-232197) .
- Remove the bolts and the lateral support crossmember.
- Remove the oil filter element. For additional information, refer to «ENGINE LUBRICATION COMPONENTS - EXPLODED VIEW»(ref-232196-S31602258832006051600000) .
- Drain the engine oil.
- Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
- Detach the heater hose retaining clip from the transaxle mount stud.
- Disconnect the upper radiator and coolant vent hoses.
- Disconnect the following electrical connectors: Transaxle mount control solenoid Purge valve
- Disconnect the engine control harness. Release the powertrain control module (PCM) connector. Remove the harness retaining nut.
- Disconnect the 2 engine control harness electrical connectors and the 2 pin-type retainers.
- Remove the bolt and disconnect the transaxle harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the DC-to-DC converter electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect and remove the fuel supply tube and evaporative emissions (EVAP) tube.
- If equipped, position the block heater wiring harness aside. Detach the 3 harness retainer clips. Route the harness through the radiator support into the engine compartment.
- Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the auxiliary coolant pump electrical connector. Position the auxiliary coolant pump aside.
- Remove the bolts and the transaxle control snow shield.
- Disconnect the transaxle control cable. Release the transaxle control cable from the control lever. Remove the nuts from the transaxle control cable bracket.
- Disconnect the pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the pin-type retainer and position the transaxle control cable aside.
- Disconnect the transaxle coolant temperature sensor electrical connector and pin-type retainer.
- Disconnect the transaxle coolant hoses.
- Remove the nut and the ground cable.
- Remove the 2 bolts and position the motor electronics coolant pump aside.
- Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator.
- Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector and remove the 3 bolts. Position the A/C compressor aside and support the compressor with a length of mechanic's wire.
- Remove the front roll restrictor bolt.
- Remove the rear roll restrictor bolt.
- Remove the nut, bolts and the engine support crossmember.
- Remove the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Remove the 2 transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Using the special tools, secure the engine to the lift table.
- Remove the engine mount bracket bolt.
- Remove the nuts and the engine mount bracket.
- Remove the RH transaxle mount bracket nut.
- Remove the bolts and the RH transaxle mount bracket.
- Remove the bolt, nut and the rear transaxle mount brace.
- Remove the nuts, bolt and rear transaxle mount.
- Lower the engine and transaxle from the vehicle.
- Using the engine crane and spreader bar, remove the engine and transaxle from the lift table.
- Disconnect the high voltage wiring harness electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 2 high voltage wiring harness electrical connectors and position the harness aside.
- Remove the remaining 6 engine-to-transaxle bolts and separate the engine and transaxle.
- Remove the bolts and the transaxle damper.

| CAUTION | During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure. |
| CAUTION | The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore, the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur. |
| CAUTION | Due to the precision fit and timing of the balancer shaft assembly, it cannot be removed from the engine block. |

- Remove the 6 bolts and the flywheel.
- Mount the engine on a suitable stand.
- Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
- Remove the bolt and the engine wiring harness connector bracket.
- Detach the engine wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the accessory drive belt tensioner.
- Disconnect the coil-on-plug and camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connectors.
- Position the rubber boot aside and disconnect the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor electrical connector.
- If equipped, disconnect the block heater electrical connector.
- Disconnect the radio ignition interference capacitor electrical connector.
- Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve electrical connector and remove the engine control wiring harness from the engine.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump pulley.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the coolant pump.
- Disconnect the coolant hose.
- Remove the 3 bolts and the thermostat housing.
- Disconnect the coolant hose.
- Remove the bolt and the knock sensor (KS).
- Remove the 8 bolts and the crankcase vent oil separator.
- Remove the 4 bolts and the oil filter adapter. Discard the gasket.
- Disconnect and remove the coolant hoses.
- If equipped, remove the block heater.
- Remove the engine cover studs.
- Remove the crankcase vent tube and the coil-on-plugs.
- Remove the spark plugs and the CHT sensor. Discard the CHT sensor.
- Remove the bolts and the valve cover.
- Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at TDC.
- Install the special tool in the slots on the rear of both camshafts.
- Remove the engine plug bolt.
- Install the special tool.
- Install the special tool.
- Remove the crankshaft pulley. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and washer. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft front oil seal.
- Remove and discard the CKP sensor.
- Remove the bolts and the engine front cover.
- Remove the timing chain tensioner. Compress the timing chain tensioner, and insert a paper clip into the hole to retain the tensioner. Remove the bolts and timing chain tensioner.
- Remove the RH timing chain guide.
- Remove the timing chain.
- Remove the bolts and the LH timing chain guide.
- Using the flats on the camshaft to prevent camshaft rotation, remove the bolts and the camshaft sprockets.
- Remove the oil pump chain tensioner and guide. Release the tension on the tensioner spring. Remove the tensioner and the shoulder bolt. Remove the guide.
- Remove the oil pump chain and sprockets. Remove the bolt. Remove the chain and sprockets.
- Mark the position of the camshaft lobes on the No. 1 cylinder for assembly reference.
- Remove the camshafts from the engine. Loosen the camshaft bearing bolts in the sequence (Scheme 575), one turn at a time. Repeat until all the tension is released. Remove the camshaft bearing caps. Remove the camshafts.
- Remove the cylinder head. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts. Remove the cylinder head. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
- Remove the cylinder head alignment dowels.
- Remove the bolts and the oil pan.
- Remove the bolts and the rear crankshaft seal.
- Remove the bolts, oil pump pickup tube and gasket.
- Remove the bolts and the oil pump.
- Remove the bolts and the block-off plate.
