- Remove and discard the TSS and OSS sensor O-ring seals.
- Remove the transmission range (TR) sensor. Remove the bolts. Remove the TR sensor from the manual valve detent lever shaft.
- Using the special tool, secure the transaxle to the bench.
- Position the drain pan under the transaxle, remove the drain plug, and drain the transmission fluid.
- Remove the pump assembly driveshaft.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard the torque converter impeller hub seal.
- Using the special tools, remove the left-hand differential seals.
- Using the special tools, remove the right-hand differential seals.
- Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube bolt.
- Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube.
- Remove and discard the transaxle filler tube grommet.
- Remove the main control cover bolts, and cover.
- Remove and discard the gasket.
- Inspect the fitting of the main control cover vent tube for blockage.
- Remove the main control valve body bolts.
- Disconnect the manual valve link from the manual valve when lifting the main control valve body from the case.
- Remove the solenoid body electrical connector. Release the retaining tabs and push the connector through the transaxle case.
- Support the manual valve and remove the main control.
- Remove the thermostatic fluid level control valve bracket. Remove the bolt. Remove the bracket.
- Remove the thermostatic fluid level control valve.
- Using the special tool, remove the servo assembly. Install the special tool. Compress the servo assembly by tightening the bolt. Remove the retaining ring.
- Remove the servo cover assembly.
- Remove the intermediate and overdrive servo piston and return spring.
- Inspect the intermediate and overdrive servo assembly and bore for damage or wear. Servo cover with bonded seal. Cushion spring. Servo apply rod. Servo return spring. Case servo bore.
- Remove the 20 bolts.
- Separate the torque converter housing from the transaxle case. Remove and discard the transaxle split flange gasket.
- Remove the differential bearing and shim. Remove the No. 15 differential bearing. Remove the No. 14 differential bearing shim.
- Remove the final drive carrier and differential assembly.
- Remove the No. 13 driven sprocket thrust bearing.
- Unclip and remove the chain pan cover.
- Remove the No. 10 driven sprocket thrust washer from the reverse/overdrive ring gear assembly.
- Remove the chain drive, reverse/overdrive ring gear, and driven sprocket assembly.
- Separate the drive chain assembly from the driven sprocket assembly and reverse/overdrive ring gear assembly.
- Remove the chain pan (with the magnet retained) from the transaxle case.
- Assemble the special tools.
- Using the special tools, remove and discard fluid filter recirculating regulator exhaust seal.
- Remove the fluid filter and seal assembly. Discard the fluid filter. Discard the fluid filter seal.
- Remove the No. 12 driven sprocket bearing.
- Remove the No. 11 driven sprocket shim (selective fit).
- Disconnect the parking lever actuating rod from the parking cam actuator lever assembly.
- Disconnect the parking lever actuation rod from the manual valve detent lever, and remove the parking lever actuation rod.
- Remove the No. 9 reverse/overdrive ring gear thrust bearing. NOTE: The thrust bearing may adhere to the reverse/overdrive sprocket.
- Remove the reverse/overdrive carrier assembly with captured No. 8 thrust bearing. NOTE: The thrust bearing is part of the reverse/overdrive carrier assembly.
- Remove the reverse/overdrive sun gear and shell assembly.
- Remove the reverse/overdrive sun gear and No. 7 shell thrust bearing. NOTE: The thrust bearing may adhere to the reverse/overdrive sun gear and shell.
- Remove the low/intermediate ring gear assembly.
- Remove the No. 6 low/intermediate carrier thrust bearing. NOTE: The low/intermediate carrier thrust bearing may adhere to the low/intermediate ring gear.
- Remove the low/intermediate carrier assembly.
- Remove the No. 5 low/intermediate sun gear thrust bearing and tag for installation.
- Remove the forward one-way clutch and low/intermediate sun gear.
- Remove the No. 4 turbine shaft thrust bearing. NOTE: The turbine shaft thrust bearing may adhere to the forward one-way clutch and low/intermediate sun gear.
- Remove the turbine shaft assembly.
- Remove the forward/coast/direct cylinder assembly and reverse clutch drum assembly from the transaxle.
- Remove the forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder from the reverse clutch drum assembly.
- Remove the No. 1 pump support thrust bearing and tag for installation. NOTE: The pump support thrust bearing assembly may adhere to the reverse clutch drum assembly.
- Remove the low one-way clutch retaining ring.
- Remove the low one-way clutch thrust plate.
- Remove the low one-way clutch assembly. NOTE: The low one-way clutch assembly should be removed as an assembly.
- Remove the low/reverse clutch wave spring.
- Remove the low/reverse clutch plates. Inspect the friction plates for partially stripped, broken or bent spline teeth, burnt, worn or flaked-off friction material, and warped or bent friction discs. Inspect the steel plates for heat discoloration or warpage.
- Remove the low/reverse clutch return spring retaining ring.
- Remove the low/reverse clutch return spring assembly.
- Remove the low/reverse clutch piston. NOTE: Rotate the low/reverse clutch piston while pulling upward.
- Remove the pump assembly bolts. NOTE: Position the transaxle so the pump assembly is facing upward.
- Using the special tools, remove the pump assembly. Install the special tool. Assemble the special tools. Using the special tools, remove the pump assembly.
- Remove the intermediate and overdrive band assembly from the case. Inspect the intermediate and overdrive band assembly for damage and wear.

- Install the forward clutch pressure plate retaining ring. Center the select fit retaining ring on the 45-degree mark between the two adjacent legs.
- Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the forward clutch pressure plate and the forward clutch pressure plate retaining ring. Take a second measurement on the opposite side. Average the two measurements to get the clearance. If the clearance is not within specification, select and install the correct thickness retaining ring to obtain the standard clearance. Retaining ring sizes: 1.43-1.53 mm (0.056-0.060 in) 1.59-1.69 mm (0.062-0.066 in) 1.75-1.85 mm (0.069-0.073 in) 1.92-2.02 mm (0.075-0.079 in)
- Install the direct clutch piston inner lip seal on the direct clutch cylinder assembly.
- Install the direct clutch piston outer seal on the direct clutch piston assembly.
- Install the direct clutch piston assembly in the forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder assembly.
- Install the direct clutch return spring assembly.
- Install the direct clutch return spring retaining ring. Using the special tool, compress the direct clutch return springs. Install the direct clutch return spring retaining ring.
- Install the direct clutch plates. Install the direct clutch external spline (steel) clutch plates. Install the direct clutch internal spline (friction) clutch plates. Install the direct clutch pressure plate.
- Install the direct clutch pressure plate retaining ring.
- Measure the direct clutch clearance as follows: Install the special tool. Zero the dial on the direct clutch pressure plate. Pull the direct clutch pressure plate upward, and record the reading.
- Make a second measurement on the opposite side. Average the two measurements to get the clearance. If the clearance is not within the specification, select and install, using the special tool, the correct thickness direct clutch pressure plate retainer snap ring to obtain the standard clearance. - Install the manual control lever shaft assembly.
- Install the parking pawl ratcheting spring.
- Install the manual control lever outer assembly and bolt.
- Using the special tool, install a new final drive lube tube seal.
- Install the final drive lube tube into the seal.
- Using the special tool, install the final drive lube tube into the case.

- Remove and discard the seven pump support seal rings from the pump support.
- Remove the six pump support bolts.
- Separate the pump support and body assembly. Remove the pump support. Remove the pump body separator plate gasket. Remove the pump body separator plate. Remove the pump body.
- Remove and discard the pump seal.
- Remove the pump drive gear assembly. Pump drive gear insert. Pump drive gear. Pump driven gear.
- Clean all parts thoroughly in clean solvent and blow dry with moisture-free regulated compressed air.

- Install the pump driven gear.
- Install the pump drive gear assembly. Install the pump drive gear. Install the pump drive gear insert.
- Using the special tool, measure the clearance between each gear and the pump body face. If the clearance exceeds specification, install a new pump assembly.
- Install the special tool.
- Align the pump support assembly. Fill the pump gear cavity with clean automatic transmission fluid to the top of the gears. Align the pump guide screws. Install the pump body. Install the pump body separator plate. Install the pump body separator plate gasket onto the pump body. Install the pump support.
- Install the six pump support bolts.
- Install the pump seal on the pump body.
- Install the seven pump support seal rings.
- Measure the pump rotational torque. Install the pump drive shaft. Measure the pump rotational torque. Remove the pump drive shaft. If rotational torque exceeds the specification, disassemble and inspect the pump assembly for contamination or incorrect end clearance.
- Install the No.1 pump support thrust bearing. Lubricate the seal rings with clean automatic transmission fluid.
- Install the forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder and reverse clutch drum on the pump support.
- Check the following passages of the forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder and reverse clutch drum with moisture-free compressed air, regulated to 276 kPa (40 psi). Reverse clutch passage. Forward clutch passage. Direct clutch passage. Coast clutch passage. Converter bypass (located on the bottom).

- Remove the reverse clutch pressure plate retainer snap ring.
- Remove the reverse clutch plates. Pressure plate. Friction plate. Steel plate. Inspect for damage or wear.
- Remove the retaining ring. Using the special tool, compress the reverse clutch return springs.
- Remove the reverse clutch return spring assembly.
- Remove the reverse clutch piston assembly.
- Clean the friction steel plates with a lint-free cloth.

- Before assembly, soak the internal spline clutch plates in clean automatic transmission fluid for 30 minutes.
- Using the special tool, install the reverse clutch piston assembly with integral seals.
- Install the reverse clutch return spring assembly.
- Install the reverse clutch retaining ring. Using the special tool, compress the reverse clutch return springs.
- Install the reverse clutch plates. Install the steel plates. Install the friction plates. Install the reverse clutch pressure plate.
- Install the reverse clutch pressure plate retainer snap ring (selective fit).
- Measure the clearance between the reverse clutch pressure plate and the reverse clutch pressure plate retainer snap ring with a feeler gauge. Take a second measurement on the opposite side. Average the two measurements to get the clearance. If the clearance is not within the specifications, select and install the correct thickness retaining ring to obtain the specified clearance. Retaining ring sizes: 1.39-1.49 mm (0.054-0.058 in) 1.53-1.63 mm (0.060-0.064 in) 1.68-1.78 mm (0.066-0.070 in)
