TRANSAXLE
The CD4E transaxle is identified by identification tag located on rear of transaxle and bottom of main control cover (side cover) assembly. (Scheme 247)and (Scheme 248).

Check transmission fluid level at every engine oil change. Under normal service, change transmission fluid and filter at 150,000-mile intervals. See DRAINING & REFILLING . Service all models at 30,000-mile intervals when used under the following conditions
- In hot weather with temperature greater than 90°F (32°C), carrying heavy loads and/or in hilly terrain.
- Towing a trailer or using a car top carrier.
- In police, taxi or door-to-door delivery service.
- Extreme dusty conditions or off-road use.
Transfer Case
Under normal driving conditions, replace transfer case fluid every 150,000 miles. Under severe driving conditions, replace transfer case fluid every 60,000 miles.
- Drive vehicle for about 20 miles or until it reaches operating temperature 150-170°F (66-77°C). With vehicle on level ground, apply parking brake, and run engine at idle. Shift gear gearshift lever through all ranges, ending in Park.
- Fluid level should be in crosshatch area on dipstick. If transmission fluid is at room temperature, fluid level should be between 2 dimples on bottom of dipstick.
- Add fluid as necessary. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-141472-S21701633982002062400000) . DO NOT overfill. Check condition of fluid for contamination and burned smell. Ensure dipstick is fully installed.
Check fluid level at transfer case fill plug hole. Fluid should be level with bottom of fill plug hole. Add fluid as necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
- Raise and support vehicle. Place drain pan under transaxle. Remove transaxle drain plug, and drain fluid. (Scheme 250) Reinstall transaxle drain plug. Clean the drain plug threads and apply a small amount of Pipe Sealant (Teflon(R) D8AZ-19554-A or XW7Z-19554-AA) or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G350-A2.
- Lower the vehicle. Add 4 qts. (3.7L) of appropriate fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-141472-S21701633982002062400000). Start engine and run at idle for 5 minutes. Shift transaxle through all gear ranges during 5-minute time period. Fill the transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level and check for correct transaxle operation. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(ref-141472-S12034116962002062400000).

Note. New transfer case lubricant must be installed any time the transfer case has been submerged in water. The transfer case is lubricated for life and is not to be checked unless a leak is suspected or a repair is necessary.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the transfer case fluid to drain. (Scheme 251) Apply thread sealant to the drain plug. Install the drain plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141472-S20626330732002062400000).
- Remove the fill plug. (Scheme 252) Fill the transfer case with appropriate fluid. See «RECOMMENDED FLUIDS»(ref-141472-S21701633982002062400000). Fluid should be even with the bottom of the fill hole. Apply sealant to the fill plug and install the plug. Tighten fill plug to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141472-S20626330732002062400000).

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS
Various components may be serviced without transaxle removal, depending on application. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
GEARSHIFT LEVER INDICATOR (COUGAR)
- Check that the gearshift lever indicator agrees with the transaxle operation. Parking lock, when gearshift lever is in Park position, reverse gear engaged when gearshift lever is in Reverse position and forward gear engaged when gearshift lever is in Drive position.
- If the gearshift lever indicator does not agree with the transaxle operation in all settings. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the heat shield. Move the gearshift lever to Drive position. Prevent the shift cable from turning and disconnect the selector cable adjusting cap (2). (Scheme 255)
- Move the gearshift lever to Drive position. Adjust the gearshift lever indicator position by loosening the gearshift lever nuts and sliding the whole gearshift lever assembly forwards or backwards, until the reading on the gearshift lever indicator and the position of the selector lever indicator correspond. (Scheme 253)
- Tighten the gearshift lever assembly nuts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141472-S20626330732002062400000). Move the manual selector lever to Drive position. (Scheme 254) Lock the selector cable. Prevent the selector cable from turning. Lock the selector cable adjustment cap. (Scheme 255) Install the heat shield.

Cougar
Note. The gearshift lever has its own detent mechanism. There is no need to hold it after engaging a gear.
- Move the gearshift lever to Drive position. Raise and support the vehicle. Adjust the selector cable, by lining up marks (1) in Drive position. (Scheme 255) Lock the selector cable adjusting cap (2). Lower the vehicle.

Escape
- Remove upper and lower steering column shrouds. (Scheme 256)and (Scheme 257). Place a.023" (0.6 mm) feeler gauge between gearshift lever and lever detent. (Scheme 258)
- Place range gearshift lever in Drive position. Hang a 3 lb. (1.4 kg) weight from gearshift lever. Loosen gearshift cable adjuster to adjust the cable then tighten cable adjuster. (Scheme 259) Remove the weight from the gearshift lever.
- Place the gearshift lever in the Park position and remove the feeler gauge. (Scheme 258) Install the lower steering column shroud. Install the screws. (Scheme 257) Install the upper steering column shroud. (Scheme 256)

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (COUGAR)
Note. As necessary, move the manual control lever to Neutral position for Transmission Range (TR) sensor adjustment.
- Disconnect the battery cables. Remove the battery. Place the vehicle in Neutral. Remove the battery tray. Disconnect the Transmission Range (TR) sensor (3) harness connector (1) and loosen bolts (2). (Scheme 260) Rotate the manual valve detent lever assembly to the Neutral position.
- Using the Transmission Range Sensor Alignment Tool (307-351), align the TR sensor. (Scheme 261) Tighten the TR sensor bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141472-S20626330732002062400000).
- Remove the transmission range sensor alignment tool. Connect the TR sensor harness connector. Install the battery tray. Connect the battery cables. Check for correct operation with the parking brake engaged. The engine should start in Park or Neutral positions only. Back-up lights should be active in the Reverse position only.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR (ESCAPE)
Note. It may be necessary to remove the thermostat housing to gain access to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
- Place the vehicle in Neutral. Disconnect the battery cables. Remove the battery and tray. Disconnect the breather tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness connector. (Scheme 262) Remove the intake tube and air cleaner cover. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- If necessary, remove thermostat housing. (Scheme 263) Disconnect the Transmission Range (TR) sensor (3) harness connector (1) and loosen bolts (2). (Scheme 260)
- Using the Transmission Range Sensor Alignment Tool (307-351), align the TR sensor. (Scheme 261) Tighten the TR sensor bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-141472-S20626330732002062400000).
- Remove the transmission range sensor alignment tool. Connect the TR sensor harness connector. Install the thermostat housing. Install the air cleaner assembly. Install the intake tube and air cleaner cover. Connect the breather tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
- Install the battery and tray. Connect the battery cables. Check the correct operation with parking brake control engaged. The engine should start in Park or Neutral positions only. Back-up lights should be active in the Reverse position only.

CONTROL VALVE BODY
| CAUTION | Do not place excessive pressure on A/C tubes/hoses or fittings when disconnecting and reconnecting the A/C components. Excessive pressure may cause component damage and A/C system leaks. |
Note. On Escape, it maybe necessary to remove the thermostat housing.
INTERMEDIATE & OVERDRIVE SERVO
| CAUTION | Do not use a screwdriver to remove the retaining ring or damage to the case may occur. Use only snap ring pliers to remove the retaining ring. |
Note. Manufacturer does not recommend removal of intermediate and overdrive servo while transaxle is installed in vehicle. On-vehicle removal of servo cover is only recommended for fluid leakage repair.
OIL COOLER TUBES (COUGAR)
| CAUTION | Do not unscrew the connecting fitting from the transaxle housing. |
- Place the vehicle in Neutral. Disconnect the battery cables. Remove the battery and tray. Disconnect the breather tube and Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. (Scheme 262) Remove the intake tube and air cleaner cover. (Scheme 264)
- Remove the air cleaner assembly. If necessary, remove the thermostat housing. (Scheme 263) Remove the Transmission Range (TR) sensor.
- Disconnect the TR sensor harness connector (1). (Scheme 260) Remove the bolts (2). Remove the TR sensor (3). Ensure the transaxle is in the Neutral position. Install the TR sensor and loosely install the bolts.
- Using the TR Sensor Alignment Tool (T79L-70010-A), align the TR sensor and tighten the bolts. (Scheme 261) Connect the harness connector. Install the thermostat housing. Install the air cleaner assembly. Install the intake tube and air cleaner cover.
- Connect the breather tube and mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Before installing the battery tray check the vent tube hose for any obstructions, kinks, or incorrect routing position.
- Install the battery and tray. Connect the battery cables. Check the correct operation with parking brake control engaged. The engine should start only in Park or Neutral. Back-up lights should be active only in the Reverse position.
