Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid

The Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid receives signal from the PCM. The TCC solenoid controls application, modulation and release of torque converter clutch. If solenoid fails in ON position, vehicle engine will run rough (shudder) and engine will stall when gearshift lever is in "D" position at low idle speeds (2nd, 3rd or 4th gear). If solenoid fails in OFF position, torque converter clutch will not engage.

Check valve body, oil pump assembly, torque converter and transaxle case.

Note. After each test, shift transaxle into Neutral and run engine for at least 15 seconds to cool torque converter and transaxle fluid.

CAUTIONDO NOT maintain Wide Open Throttle (WOT) in any gear for more than 5 seconds. If engine RPM exceeds maximum specified stall speed, release accelerator immediately. Clutch or band slippage is indicated.

The stall speed test checks the operation of the following items

  1. Converter One-Way Clutch
  2. Forward Clutch
  3. Low/Reverse One-Way Clutch
  4. Reverse Clutch
  5. Forward One-Way Clutch
  6. Engine Performance
  1. Apply service and parking brakes. Connect tachometer to engine, and record RPM reached in each gear selector range (except Neutral) at WOT. Stall speed should be 2383-2805 RPM for Cougar and 2586-2963 RPM for Escape and Tribute. If stall speeds exceed specification, ensure engine is mechanically okay and tuned to specification. If engine is okay, remove torque converter one-way clutch and check for slippage.
  2. If stall speed is too high in "D", "2" or "1", the following components may be faulty: Forward Clutch Forward One-Way Clutch Low One-Way Clutch
  3. If stall speed is too high in "R", the following components may be faulty: Low/Reverse Clutch Reverse Clutch

TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST

Note. Retrieve and record DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) . Repair all DTCs before performing the following test.

  1. Connect tachometer. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Ensure transaxle fluid level is correct. Drive vehicle and maintain vehicle speed at about 50 MPH. Release throttle for about 2 seconds, then reapply to previous setting. Engine RPM should increase when throttle is released, and decrease in about 5 seconds after throttle is reapplied. Go to next step.
  2. Maintain vehicle speed at about 50 MPH. Apply light pressure to brake pedal so that brakelights operate. Engine RPM should increase as brake pedal is tapped, and then decrease about 5 seconds after pedal is released. If torque converter clutch operation is not as specified, perform «TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID»(ref-139754-S21572436312002050800000) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID

Note. After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

  1. Ensure transaxle harness connector is in acceptable condition. Repair as necessary. Ensure transaxle harness connector is fully seated. Connect NGS tester or equivalent to DLC. Perform «KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST»(ref-139754-S34664706792002050800000) until continuous memory codes have been displayed. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Enter output test mode. See «ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS»(ref-139754-S22891888092002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Select ALL ON mode. Push START to turn outputs on. Push STOP to turn outputs off. If vehicle enters output test mode, remain in output test mode and go to next step. If vehicle will not enter output test mode, see «SCAN TOOL UNABLE TO COMMUNICATE»(ref-139754-S06692093982002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Inspect condition of connector and repair as needed. Using DVOM, connect positive lead to transaxle harness connector terminal No. 1 and negative lead to terminal No. 7. (Схема №18) While monitoring DVOM, press START and STOP to cycle TCC solenoid output on and off. If voltage changes at least.5 volt, go to step 5. If voltage is unaffected, go to next step.
  3. Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector, and inspect it for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box, leaving PCM disconnected. Measure and record resistance between breakout box test pin No. 80 (Cougar) or No. 54 (Escape and Tribute) and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 7. (Схема №18) Measure and record resistance between test pins No. 71 and 97, and transaxle harness connector terminal No. 1. If each resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open circuit. Connect all components. Disconnect breakout box and clear DTCs. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  4. Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 80 (Cougar) or No. 54 (Escape and Tribute) and test pins No. 71 and 97. Measure and record resistance between test pin No. 80 (Cougar) or No. 54 (Escape and Tribute) and test pins No. 24, 51, 77, 91, 103 and ground. If each resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If any resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short circuit. Connect all components. Disconnect breakout box and clear DTCs. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  5. Connect transmission tester. Perform TCC solenoid functional test. See transmission tester instructions. Press TCC switch. If solenoid activates (Green LED on), go to next step. If LED turns Red (shorted to VPWR) or if solenoid does not activate LED (shorted to ground or open circuit), go to step 7.
  6. Connect PCM 104-pin connector. Perform test drive using transmission tester. If TCC does not activate and engine RPM does not decrease when operated by transmission tester, go to next step. If TCC activates and engine RPM decreases when operated with transmission tester, replace PCM. See «POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE»(ref-139754-S16632634802002050800000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect breakout box and clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-139754-S02188507652002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If symptoms still exist, see appropriate SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS under «TROUBLE SHOOTING»(ref-139754-S28521171952002050800000).
  7. Set transmission tester BENCH/DRIVE switch to BENCH position. Set solenoid select switch to OHMS CHECK. Measure resistance between TCC solenoid jack and VPWR jack on transmission tester. If resistance is 12.5-19.0 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 12.5-19.0 ohms, replace faulty transmission control solenoid body assembly. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  8. Check continuity between BAT (-) jack and TCC jacks on transmission tester. If continuity exists, replace faulty transmission control solenoid body assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING. Clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-139754-S02188507652002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See «RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)»(ref-139754-S01576406042002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If continuity does not exist, clear DTCs. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-139754-S02188507652002050800000) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST.
