Diagnosis - CD4E Automatic Transmission: Other Ford Escape I

TRANSAXLE

Note. The CD4E transaxle may also be known as 4F44E.

The CD4E automatic transaxle is identified by identification tag located on rear of transaxle and bottom of main control cover assembly. (Scheme 28)and (Scheme 29).

ELECTRONIC CONTROL SYSTEM

Note. For engine-related DTCs, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. These DTCs pertain to engine performance and must be repaired first, as engine performance and related component signals will affect transmission operation and diagnosis.

Retrieving DTCs

DTCs are retrieved from EEC-V system through 16-pin Data Link Connector (DLC) using appropriate scan tool. DLC is located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. Self-diagnostic test procedures are written for use with New Generation Star (NGS) tester. If an aftermarket scan tool is used, ensure scan tool is OBD-II certified. Refer to scan tool manufacturer's operating procedures. Once DTCs are recorded, diagnostic tests are used to locate and repair problem. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .

POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE

The PCM receives inputs from various engine or vehicle sensors and driver demands to control shift scheduling, shift feel and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) operation. The PCM has an adaptive learn strategy to electronically control the transaxle which will automatically adjust the shift feel. The first few hundred miles of operation of the transaxle may have abrupt shifting. This is a normal operation. If the battery has been disconnected for any reason, it will need to be kept disconnected for approximately 20 minutes to reset the adaptive shift pressure strategy or the scan tool should be used to clear the transmission keep alive memory (KAM) tables. On Cougar, PCM is located in right rear of engine compartment, mounted on cowl. (Scheme 30) On Escape and Tribute, PCM is located in center rear of engine compartment.

Air Conditioning Clutch Switch

On factory installed A/C system, PCM receives signal voltage from Air Conditioning Clutch (ACC) switch, indicating that the air conditioning compressor clutch is engaged. The PCM uses the ACC switch signal to adjust line pressure to compensate for additional engine load. If the ACC switch fails with closed contacts, line pressure will be slightly low with air conditioning off. If the ACC switch fails with open contacts, line pressure will be slightly higher with air conditioning on.

Brake Pedal Position Switch

The PCM receives a signal from the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch when the brake switch is operated. Torque converter clutch is disengaged when brakes are applied. Malfunctioning switch will affect torque converter operation.

Crankshaft Position Sensor & Electronic Ignition

The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor sends crankshaft position information to the PCM. Signal received by the PCM affects line pressure, shift scheduling, torque converter clutch and WOT shift control. Engine speed signal malfunction may result in harsh engagements, harsh shifts, no TCC lock-up and/or late WOT shifts.

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor detects the temperature of the engine coolant and supplies the information to the PCM. The ECT sensor is used to control Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) operation. The ECT is installed in the heater outlet fitting or cooling passage on the engine. For engine control applications, the ECT signal is used to modify ignition timing, EGR flow and air-to-fuel ratio as a function of engine coolant temperature.

Mass Air Flow Sensor

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor directly measures the mass of the air flowing into the engine. The sensor output is a DC (analog) signal ranging from about 0.5 volt to 5.0 volts by the PCM to calculate the injector pulse width for stoichiometry. The MAF sensor input is used for EPC pressure control, shift and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) control.

Output Shaft Speed Sensor

Note. Output shaft speed sensor may also be known as vehicle speed sensor.

The Output Shaft Speed (OSS) is a magnetic pickup that sends output speed signal to the PCM. Malfunction of sensor may cause harsh engagements of shifts. Lack of 4th gear, TCC lock-up, or engine braking in manual 2nd or manual 3rd gear may also result.

Power Steering Pressure Switch

The Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch signals the PCM when power steering pressure exceeds a specified limit. PCM will adjust idle speed to compensate for added load on engine. The increase in RPM is used as an input to PCM to adjust EPC pressure to transaxle. If PSP switch fails on, EPC will be high, and firm engagements and shifts, and harsh coast downshifts may occur. If PSP switch fails off, EPC pressure will be lower during increased loading of the power steering system.

Transmission Control Switch

The Transmission Control Switch (TCS) is mounted on shift lever handle. Switch controls operation of 4th gear and provides coast braking in 2nd and 3rd gear. Malfunction of switch will cause lack of 4th gear disable function. See SYMPTOM TESTS .

Transmission Control Indicator Light

The Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) is located in the instrument panel and is labeled O/D OFF. The transmission control switch controls the ON/OFF operation of the TCIL. When the driver initially presses the button of the TCS, the TCIL turns ON to indicate that transaxle operation in fourth gear is disabled. When the driver presses the TCS again, the TCIL turns OFF. To diagnose inoperative TCIL, see SYMPTOM TESTS .

Throttle Position Sensor

The Throttle Position (TP) sensor is a potentiometer mounted to the engine throttle body. The PCM receives a signal from TP sensor relaying throttle plate position. TP sensor failure will cause PCM to operate in fail safe mode and raise line pressure to prevent transaxle damage. This condition will result in harsh engagements, firm shift feel, abnormal shift schedule, and TCC not engaging or cycling.

Transmission Range Sensor

The Transmission Range (TR) sensor is located on outside of transaxle at manual lever. The TR sensor opens or closes a set of 4 switches that are monitored by the PCM. The internal switch signal corresponds with position of gearshift lever. The TR sensor completes the neutral/start and back-up lights circuits. Malfunction of the TR sensor may cause harsh engagements and firm shift feel. Improper shifting or shift selection and no engine cranking may also result.

Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor

The Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor (TSS) sensor is a magnetic pick-up that sends turbine shaft speed signal to PCM. The TSS sensor provides converter turbine speed information for Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) strategy, which is also used in determining static EPC pressure settings. Malfunction of sensor may cause harsh engagements of shifts. Lack of 4th gear or no engine braking in manual 2nd or manual 3rd gear may also result.

Check Transaxle Light

The Check Transaxle light will flash when the transaxle has overheated 149°C (300°F). Other transaxle faults will also cause the Check Transaxle light to flash. Currently, the KOEO bulb function test is not available on this Powertrain Control Module (PCM) output. Diagnostic testing may be completed for this PCM output by using scan tool.

Electronic Pressure Control Solenoid

This solenoid is a Variable-Force Style (VFS) solenoid. The VFS-type solenoid is an electro-hydraulic actuator combining a solenoid and a regulating valve. It supplies Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid which regulates transaxle line pressure and line modulator pressure. Pressure regulation is done by producing resisting forces to the main regulator and line modulator circuits. These two pressures control clutch application pressures. The PCM has an adaptive learn strategy to electronically control the transaxle which will automatically adjust the shift feel. If the battery has been disconnected for any reason, it will need to be kept disconnected for approximately 20 minutes to reset the adaptive shift pressure strategy or the scan tool should be used to perform the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) reset. If EPC solenoid fails, transaxle will operate in fail-safe mode. Line pressure will go to maximum pressure. Harsh engagements and harsh upshifts and downshifts will result.

SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM

PROGRAMMING

Note. Before performing PCM programming procedure, check for any applicable Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that may apply to vehicle application.

Flash Electronically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory (EEPROM) is contained in an Integrated Circuit (IC) inside of PCM. The EEPROM contains the vehicle strategy and any calibration information specific to vehicle. The IC is reprogrammable, and at times it may become necessary to reprogram or reflash the entire contents. This is usually due to an after production strategy change or the Flash Vehicle Identification (VID) block has been previously reprogrammed and has reached its limit. The VID block can be tailored to accommodate various hardware changes made since vehicle production. This procedure can only be performed using Ford's Service Bay Technical System (SBTS) or equivalent.

A replacement PCM will have a label stating PROGRAMMING REQUIRED. This indicates that it is necessary to retrieve VID data from the original PCM before removing PCM from vehicle. This procedure can be performed using New Generation Star (007-00500) scan tool or equivalent. See FLASH VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION BLOCK PROCEDURE . If original PCM is damaged, nonfunctional or incapable of communicating, it will be necessary to manually reprogram VID block. This procedure can only be performed by contacting the "AS BUILT" data center for programming information.

No Reverse Engagement

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Harsh Reverse Or Forward Engagement

Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR and TEST E: ELECTRONIC PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Some Or All Shifts Missing

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Some Or All Shifts Early Or Late

Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Erratic Or Hunting Shifts

Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS , TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID , TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR , TEST F: TURBINE SHAFT SPEED SENSOR & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR and TEST G: 3-2 TIMING/COAST CLUTCH SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Soft Or Slipping Shifts

Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR and TEST E: ELECTRONIC PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Harsh Shifts

Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR , TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID , TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR , TEST E: ELECTRONIC PRESSURE CONTROL SOLENOID , TEST F: TURBINE SHAFT SPEED SENSOR & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR and TEST G: 3-2 TIMING/COAST CLUTCH SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No 1st Gear In Drive, Engages In Higher Gear ("D" Position)

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No Manual 1st Gear (1st Gear Is Okay In "D")

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No 1-2 Upshift In "D" Position

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No 2-3 Upshift In "D" Position

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No 3-4 Upshift In "D" Position

Perform TEST A: SHIFT SOLENOIDS and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No TCC Engagement

Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR , TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID and TEST F: TURBINE SHAFT SPEED SENSOR & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

TCC Always Engaged

Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR and TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No Engine Braking In Manual 1st, Manual 2nd Or Drive (TCS On)

Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR and TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Poor Vehicle Performance

Check for poor engine performance. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR , TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID and TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Engine Will Not Crank

Perform TEST D: TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

Transaxle Overheating

Check for poor engine performance. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Check torque converter clutch operation. See TORQUE CONVERTOR ENGAGEMENT TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform TEST B: TRANSMISSION FLUID TEMPERATURE SENSOR , TEST C: TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID and TEST F: TURBINE SHAFT SPEED SENSOR & OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. Repair as necessary. Clear DTCs and perform TRANSAXLE DRIVE CYCLE TEST under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) and ensure DTCs are not present.

No Forward Gears

Check shift linkage, oil pump external or internal (support sealing rings) leakage, valve body malfunction (internal leak, stuck regulator valve and/or leaking forward accumulator), forward and coast clutch assembly, low one-way clutch, forward one-way clutch and low/intermediate planetary carrier.

No Reverse

Check external and internal shift linkage, low line pressure, valve body (stuck valve), oil pump internal leak (No. 6 and 7 sealing rings), reverse clutch assembly, low/reverse clutch assembly, forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder, case (oil passages cross leakage or porosity) and reverse/overdrive gear set.

Harsh Reverse &/Or Forward Engagement

Check fluid level, axle shafts and CV joints, engine/transaxle mounts, shift linkage, line pressure, restricted oil filter, valve body, forward clutch assembly, reverse clutch assembly, low/reverse clutch assembly and direct clutch assembly.

Delayed/Soft Reverse &/Or Forward Engagement

Check fluid level, axle shafts and CV joints, engine/transaxle mounts, shift linkage, line pressure, restricted oil filter, valve body, forward clutch assembly, reverse clutch assembly, low/reverse clutch assembly and direct clutch assembly.

No Forward Or Reverse

Check fluid level, shift linkage, line pressure, oil pump, restricted oil filter, valve body, torque converter, turbine shaft to forward/coast/direct clutch cylinder, chain and sprocket assembly, parking pawl mechanism, axle shafts and CV joints, final drive assembly and planetary gear assemblies.

All Or Some Shifts Not Present

Check fluid level, shift linkage, speedometer drive/driven gear, valve body, band, low one-way clutch assembly, overdrive/reverse sun gear and shell, case, oil pump, direct clutch assembly, intermediate/overdrive servo, coast clutch assembly and forward one-way clutch assembly.

Early Or Late Shifting

Check tire size and speedometer drive/driven gear.

Erratic/Hunting Shift Timing

Check fluid, vehicle speed input, valve body and miscellaneous internal failures.

Soft/Slipping Shift Feel

Check fluid condition, shift linkage, low line pressure, valve body, oil pump assembly and leaking filter and/or seal.

Harsh Shift Feel

Check fluid level and condition, axle shafts and CV joints, high line pressure, valve body and torque converter.

No First Gear (In "D" Position)

Check shift linkage, valve body and internal seal(s) leakage.

No Low Gear

Check shift linkage and valve body.

Check correct shift linkage to shift lever indexing, torque converter (TCC applied and one-way clutch).

No Engine Braking In Manual Low Position

Check valve body, coast clutch assembly, low/reverse clutch assembly and oil pump assembly.

No Engine Braking In Manual 2nd Position

Check shift linkage, valve body, forward one-way clutch assembly, coast clutch assembly and oil pump assembly.

Vehicle Movement In Neutral Position

Check shift linkage, oil pump assembly and forward/coast clutch assembly.

PERFORMANCE TESTS

CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer may lose memory data. Driveability concerns may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. Before disconnecting battery, see COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

HYDRAULIC PRESSURE TESTS

CAUTIONPerform line pressure test before performing stall speed test. If line pressure is low at stall, DO NOT perform stall speed test, or transaxle damage will occur. DO NOT maintain Wide Open Throttle (WOT) in any gear for more than 5 seconds.

Line Pressure Low At Idle In All Ranges

Check for low fluid level, restricted inlet filter, loose valve body or valve body components, oil pump leakage and sticking main regulator valve.

Line Pressure High In All Ranges

Check main regulator valve, solenoid body and wiring harness and perform Quick Test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.

AIR PRESSURE TESTS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect transaxle harness connector. Compress tabs on transaxle electrical harness receptacle and push into case. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove drain plug and drain fluid. Remove left front fender splash shield. Secure cooler lines away from main control cover assembly (side cover). Remove main control as an assembly with solenoid body assembly.
  3. Install Transmission Test Plate (T94P-77000-S) using 6 bolts. Air check clutch hydraulic circuits for function and leakage. Apply about 40 psi (2.8 kg/cm 2 ) air pressure to appropriate clutch port. (Scheme 32)
  4. A dull thud may be heard or movement felt when clutch piston is applied. If clutch seals or check balls are leaking, a hissing sound may be heard. If leakage is detected, disassemble transaxle and inspect. Remove test plate.
  5. To complete installation, reverse removal procedures. Tighten drain plug to specification. Add 6 qts. (5.7L) of Mercon ATF. Start and run vehicle. Add fluid as necessary.

Visual Check

Perform preliminary inspection before proceeding. See PRELIMINARY INSPECTION under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Ensure vacuum hoses and vehicle wiring harnesses are properly routed and connected.

Vehicle Preparation & Equipment Hook-Up

Apply parking brake, and place gearshift lever in "P" position. Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical accessories. Connect appropriate test equipment to vehicle as follows

  1. Generic Scan Tool Ensure scan tool meets or exceeds OBD-II standard. Follow manufacturer's instructions to hook up equipment and record DTCs.
  2. New Generation STAR Tester Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect adapter cable lead to NGS tester. Connect service connectors of adapter cable to DLC located below instrument panel, to right of steering column. Go to «KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) SELF-TEST»(ref-139754-S34664706792002050800000) . Follow manufacturer's instructions.
  3. EEC-V 104-Pin Breakout Box If instructed, disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Inspect connector for damaged terminals, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary. Install Breakout Box (418-049), leaving PCM disconnected. Breakout box is used to assist in performing voltage and resistance measurements at PCM harness connector without subjecting connector to damage. Breakout box may be also know as the BOB.
  4. Digital Volt-Ohm Multimeter (DVOM) Use appropriate DVOM to perform voltage and/or resistance measurements across appropriate circuits.
  5. Transmission Tester The Rotunda(R) Transmission Tester is used to diagnose electronically controlled transaxles and is used in conjunction with the diagnostic tests. The tests should be carried out in order. Installing the Transmission Tester allows separation of the vehicle electronics from transmission electronics.
