CAUTIONThe PCM harness connectors must be properly seated and the connector latch properly attached to eliminate possible driveability concerns or a no-start condition. Installing PCM connectors on an angle may cause an improper connection, misdiagnosis, and damaged components. Install the connector until the lever pivots and seats itself. Apply light pressure to get the connector into position on the PCM and then fully seat the connector.

Note. Visually inspect the harness connectors for corrosion, damage, proper mating and correct pin tension.

Note. When the PCM is disconnected additional DTCs will be set. Clear all DTCs after restoring the vehicle.

Description

The powertrain control module (PCM) reset occurs when the PCM momentarily "reboots" or is turned off and on while the engine is operating. If the condition occurs a single time, the engine will momentarily stumble and the PCM will go through a normal key on cycle, including turning the glow plug lamp and glow plugs on and will also attempt to validate the accelerator pedal position. If the pedal is not at the idle position when this fault occurs, pedal authority will not be allowed by the PCM until the accelerator pedal is released and the engine returns to idle.

  1. P1502 = APCM On During Self-Test

The glow plug system is composed of a solid state glow plug control module (GPCM) and the glow plugs. The GPCM provides direct battery voltage to the glow plugs. The GPCM monitors the individual glow plug operation. Faults detected by the GPCM are transmitted to the PCM using a serial communication signal on a diagnostic line.

The powertrain control module (PCM) enables and controls the GPCM. Glow plug ON time is a function of oil temperature, barometric pressure and battery voltage. The ON time normally varies between 1 to 120 seconds and is limited by the GPCM to 180 seconds regardless of PCM commands.

Note. Wait-to-Start indicator ON time is independent from GPCM ON time.

The APCM system provides an operator interface to the drive-by-wire powertrain control system to affect charge protection, engine RPM and manual throttle control between 1,300 and 2,500 rpm.

The following entry conditions/input signals are required to enable the APCM

  1. parking brake set
  2. the automatic transmission in PARK or manual transmission in NEUTRAL with the clutch pedal released
  3. brake pedal position (BPP)
  4. accelerator pedal
  5. hi-mount stoplamp (APCM operation with hazard lamps)

The following error codes are displayed from the APCM only

  1. CErr indicates that one or both BUS circuits are open or shorted.
  2. CrSd indicates a fault on BUS circuits or internal APCM fault.
  3. EErr and AErr both indicate an internal APCM fault.

Follow the direction given below to aid in diagnosing the APCM fault condition

  1. If APCM does not work at all, Go to AN1 .
  2. If APCM does not work with hazard flashers, Go to AN7 .
  3. If APCM error code CErr or CrSd are displayed, Go to AN5 .
  4. If APCM error code EErr or AErr are displayed, install a new APCM.
