Scan Tool Hookup

The Scan Tool must be connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC) for communication with the vehicle.

Key On Engine Off (KOEO) On-Demand Self-Test

Key On Engine Off (KOEO) On-Demand Self -Test is a functional test of the PCM performed on demand with the key on and the engine off. This test will check that all inputs and outputs (circuits, sensors, regulators, relays and solenoids) connected to the PCM are electrically operating without fault.

Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Injector Electrical Self-Test (Click Test)

Key On Engine OFF (KOEO) injector electrical self-test (click test) is a functional test of the FICM performed on demand with the key on and the engine off. This test determines if the injector circuits and solenoids are electrically operating without fault. All injectors will click (audible feedback of the injector solenoids energizing the injector valves) together. Then each injector 1 through 8 is cycled approximately one second in sequence. This process is repeated three times during the entire test. If a fault is detected by the FICM, a CAN message is sent to the PCM. Corresponding fault DTCs are displayed at the end of the self-test.

Key On Engine Running (KOER) On-Demand Self-Test

Key On Engine Running (KOER) On-Demand Self-Test is a functional test of the PCM performed on demand with the engine running. Temperature is not a factor, but A/C must be turned off. A check is made on the injection control pressure (ICP) variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. During this test, engine RPM can vary. A fault must be present at the time of testing for the KOER On Demand Self-Test to detect a fault. If a fault is detected, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be the output on the data link at the end of the test when requested by a scan tool. Only a hard fault code (DTC) will be displayed.

Key On Engine Running (KOER) Glow Plug Monitoring Self-Test

Key On Engine Running (KOER) Glow Plug Monitoring Self-Test is a functional test of the glow plug system performed on demand with the engine running and the A/C off. Battery voltage must be maintained at 10-14 volts during this test. If necessary, press the accelerator pedal to increase voltage to the specified level. The PCM will activate the Glow Plug Control Module (GPCM) and monitor the glow plug circuits. A fault must be present at the time of testing for the test to detect a fault. DTCs will be sent to the PCM on the diagnostic line and then output to the scan tool.

KOEO On-Demand Self-Test

Note. It is necessary to wait 4 seconds after key on to initiate the KOEO self-test. Failure to do so will result in a "test fail PCM" message to be displayed.

Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.

  1. Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to «QUICK TEST OPERATION»(ref-225538-S40905568902006031800000) .
  2. Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.

Note. The following steps must be performed for the powertrain and transmission control modules.

  1. Select KOEO ON DEMAND SELF-TEST.
  2. Turn key on.
  3. Wait 4 seconds for PCM and FICM to initialize completely.
  4. Follow operating instructions from the menu.
  5. Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.
  6. After test, cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.

If performing repeated self-tests, it may be necessary to unplug the GPCM to keep battery from going dead. Ignore any glow plug codes while the GPCM is unplugged.

KOER On-Demand Self-Test

Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. Turn A/C off. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.

Note. Engine may run rough during this test.

  1. Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to «QUICK TEST OPERATION»(ref-225538-S40905568902006031800000) .
  2. Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.

Note. The following steps must be performed for the powertrain and transmission control modules.

  1. Select KOER ON DEMAND SELF-TEST.
  2. Follow operating instructions from the menu.
  3. Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.
  4. After test, cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.

KOEO Injector Electrical Self-Test (Click Test)

Note. If no DTCs are present and the KOEO Injector Electrical Self-Test (click test) aborts while trying to perform, refer to DIAGNOSTIC SUBROUTINES - 6.0L DIESEL , Enhanced Injector Diagnostics.

Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.

  1. Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to «QUICK TEST OPERATION»(ref-225538-S40905568902006031800000)
  2. Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
  3. Select KOEO INJECTOR ELECTRICAL SELF-TEST (CLICK TEST).
  4. Follow operating instructions from the menu.
  5. Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.
  6. After test, cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.

KOER Glow Plug Monitoring Self-Test

Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. Turn A/C off. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-test.

Note. When running this self-test, battery voltage must not drop below 10 volts or go above 14 volts. Make sure that batteries are OK and the charging system is working properly. If necessary, press the accelerator pedal to maintain specified voltage.

  1. Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to «QUICK TEST OPERATION»(ref-225538-S40905568902006031800000)
  2. Using a digital multimeter connected to the battery, monitor voltage. It may be necessary to raise RPM to maintain voltage.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Parking brake set, automatic transmission in PARK or manual transmission in NEUTRAL.
  5. Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
  6. Select KOER GLOW PLUG MONITORING SELF-TEST.
  7. Follow instructions on screen.
  8. Maintain system voltage until test is complete.
  9. Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.

Intermittent Diagnostic Techniques

Intermittent diagnostic techniques help find and isolate the root cause of intermittent faults associated with the PCM. The material is organized to help find the fault and perform the repair. There are examples that illustrate the diagnostic techniques. The process of finding and isolating an intermittent, starts with recreating a fault symptom, accumulating PCM data and comparing that data to typical values and analyzing the results.

Before proceeding, be sure that

  1. Customary mechanical system tests and inspections do not reveal a problem. (Remember, mechanical component problems can make a PCM system react abnormally.)
  2. Review Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and OASIS messages, if available.
  3. Quick Test and associated Pinpoint diagnosis have been completed without finding a fault, and the symptom is still occurring.
