Compression
- When checking compression, disconnect connector for crankshaft position sensor, as this prevents ignition and fuel injection systems from operating. Connector for crankshaft position sensor is a 3-pin Black connector located near top of timing belt cover and contains Red, Black and Blue/White wires in the connector.
- Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an engine analyzer. See engine analyzer manual for specific instructions.
| WARNING | DO NOT use ignition switch during compression tests on fuel injected vehicles. Use a remote starter to crank engine. Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard or contaminate the engine's oiling system. |

FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
| WARNING | Always release fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See the COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in the GENERAL INFORMATION section before disconnecting battery. |
- Remove rear seat cushion. Remove protector for access to fuel pump electrical connector, located on top of fuel tank. Disconnect fuel pump electrical connector from wiring harness.
- Start engine and allow engine to idle until engine stalls. Turn ignition off. Reinstall fuel pump electrical connector, protector and rear seat cushion. Fuel lines may now be disconnected. Cover fuel lines with shop towel before disconnecting, as some residual fuel pressure may exist.
Scheme 2
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-11296-S16880137852000111300000) under FUEL SYSTEM.
- Fuel supply line must be disconnected from rear of fuel rail. Cover fuel supply line with shop towel, as some residual fuel pressure may exist in fuel rail. Remove bolts and fuel supply line. Install Hose Adapter (MD998742), Adapter Hose (MD998709) and fuel pressure gauge on end of fuel rail. Reconnect fuel supply line.
- Apply battery voltage to fuel pump check terminal. Fuel pump check terminal is a 1-pin Black connector located on firewall, near battery and contains a Black/Blue wire. (Scheme 2) Check for fuel leaks. Disconnect battery voltage from fuel pump check terminal.
- Start engine and allow engine to idle. Note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure with engine idling should be 33 psi (2.3 kg/cm 2 ).
- Disconnect and plug vacuum hose at fuel pressure regulator, located on front (timing belt end) of fuel rail. Note fuel pressure with engine idling. Fuel pressure should be 42-45 psi (2.9-3.2 kg/cm 2 ).
- Accelerate engine several times and then allow engine to idle. Note that fuel pressure does not decrease.
- If fuel pressure is the same with or without vacuum hose connected to fuel pressure regulator, check for defective vacuum hose. If vacuum hose is okay, check for defective fuel pressure solenoid and control system. If problem exists in fuel pressure solenoid and control system, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be stored in Engine Control Module (ECM). See the TESTS W/CODES article.
- If fuel pressure exceeds specification, go to step 11). If fuel pressure is less than specified, check for clogged fuel filter. Fuel filter is located on frame rail, near fuel tank. Replace fuel filter if clogged, and recheck fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is still not within specification, go to next step.
- Check for fuel pressure in fuel return hose at fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pressure regulator is located on front (timing belt end) of fuel rail.
- If fuel pressure exists in fuel return hose, fuel pressure regulator is leaking. If no fuel pressure exists in fuel return hose, low fuel pressure is caused by defective fuel pump. Fuel pump is located in fuel tank. Replace components as necessary. See the REMOVE/INSTALL/OVERHAUL article.
- If fuel pressure exceeds specification, check for restricted fuel return hose or pipe. If fuel return hose or pipe are not restricted, check for binding valve in fuel pressure regulator. Fuel pressure regulator is located on front (timing belt end) of fuel rail. See the REMOVE/INSTALL/OVERHAUL article. Once correct fuel pressure is obtained, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Release fuel pressure. Remove test equipment. Reinstall fuel supply line.
FUEL PUMP RELAY
Engine Control Module (ECM) controls fuel pump relay operation by controlling fuel pump relay ground circuit. PCM opens ground circuit when ignition is off, and completes ground circuit when ignition is on, to provide fuel pump operation when engine is cranking or running.
Fuel pump relay receives battery voltage from the ignition switch on 2 Black/White wires. ECM controls the ground circuit on the White/Red wire. The Black/Blue wire supplies voltage to fuel pump when fuel pump relay is energized. Fuel pump relay is located on passenger's side of center console, just in front of emergency brake lever. (Scheme 3)
Note. For fuel pump relay testing, see procedures in the SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article.

IGNITION CHECKS
Note. If a no-start condition exists, check all of the following components. If any components are defective, replace an necessary. If all components are okay, but no-start condition still exists, proceed to TROUBLE SYMPTOM INSPECTION table under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS in the TESTS W/CODES article for additional testing of ignition system and control circuits.
Spark Plug Wire Resistance
Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between both ends of spark plug wire. Replace spark plug wire if resistance exceeds 22,000 ohms.
Ignition Coil Resistance
- Disconnect ignition coil connector. Ignition coil is located on top of engine, between valve covers and contains a 3-pin connector.
- To check ignition coil primary resistance, using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminals No. 1 and 3 on ignition coil connector for cylinders No. 2 and 3. (Scheme 4)
- Check resistance between terminals No. 2 and 3 on ignition coil connector for cylinders No. 1 and 4. Replace ignition coil if resistance is not.70-.86 ohm.
- To check ignition coil secondary resistance, using ohmmeter, check resistance between appropriate spark plug wire terminals on ignition coil for specified cylinders. (Scheme 5) Replace ignition coil if resistance is not 11,300-15,300 ohms.
