INSPECTION PROCEDURE 24 - FUEL PUMP SYSTEM OPERATION
Note. For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
Note. Possible causes are: defective fuel pump relay, defective fuel pump, loose connector, open or shorted fuel pump wiring circuit or defective ECM.
- Using scan tool, actuate fuel pump. Fuel pump is located in fuel tank. If fuel pump operates, go to step 4). If fuel pump does not operate, go to next step.
- Ensure ignition is off. Apply battery voltage to fuel pump check terminal. Fuel pump check terminal is a 1-pin Black connector located on firewall, near battery and contains a Black/Blue wire. see scheme 17 see scheme 17: Ignition Timing Adjustment Connector & Fuel Pump Check Terminal
- If fuel pump operates, go to step 4). If fuel pump does not operate, check fuel pump circuit. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 41.
- Check fuel pump relay. See the SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS article. If fuel pump relay is okay, go to next step. Replace fuel pump relay if defective and recheck operation.
- Note location of fuel pump relay on passenger's side of center console, just in front of emergency brake lever. see scheme 16 Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 1 (Black/Blue wire) at fuel pump relay connector while using scan tool to actuate fuel pump. Battery voltage should exist.
- If battery voltage exists, check wiring harness between fuel pump relay and fuel pump check terminal. Repair wiring harness if defective. If battery voltage does not exist, check fuel pump drive control circuit. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 42.
SCAN TOOL OPERATION
- The DRB-III scan tool is used to monitor a specified component operating range. Component operating range is then compared to a normal operating range to determine if component is operating properly. When using DRB-III scan tool, scan tool can may be used in 2 modes, general scan tool mode and DRB-III scan tool mode.
- Specified scan tool mode must be used on scan tool when monitoring specified component. See SCAN TOOL MODE OPERATION table.
- Once proper scan tool mode operation is determined, use scan tool to monitor specified component operation under specified operating condition. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table.
- Specified component operating range should be within specified normal operating range. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table. If component operating range is not within normal operating range, perform specified Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) test or specified trouble symptom inspection procedure (if available). See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table.

- The DRB-III scan tool is used perform actuator test on a specified component to determine if the component operates correctly. Use scan tool to actuate specified component under specified operating condition. See «SCAN TOOL ACTUATOR TESTS»(ref-11311-S36429429792000111300000) table.
- Specified component normal operation should be as described. See «SCAN TOOL ACTUATOR TESTS»(ref-11311-S36159689142000111300000) table. If component does not operate correctly, perform specified Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) test or specified trouble symptom inspection procedure (if available).
