ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK & STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK
- Put gear selector in Neutral. Connect test light between starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. Fully depress clutch pedal and turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test illuminates, replace starter solenoid.
- Locate Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch above clutch pedal. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe CPP switch connector terminal No. 2 (Black/Yellow wire). Fully depress clutch pedal and turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between CPP switch and starter solenoid.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe CPP switch connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, check connection at CPP switch. If connection is okay, replace CPP switch.
- Locate junction block connectors under left side of instrument panel. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 18-pin connector C6, terminal No. 15 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, repair open in Black/Red wire between CPP switch and junction block.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, check junction block connection. If connection is okay, replace junction block.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 3 (White wire). If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, replace ignition switch.
- Locate fuse block in engine compartment, mounted to left fender. Check fuse block and junction block connections. Check for an open in White/Green wire between IG (60-amp) fuse in fuse block and junction block 2-pin connector C7, terminal No. 1. If connections and White/Green wire are okay, replace junction block.
ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK OR CRANKS SLOWLY & STARTER SOLENOID CLICKS
- Connect voltmeter across battery terminals. Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is 9.6 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9.6 volts, perform battery load test. If battery is not okay, replace battery. If battery is okay, repair or replace starter.
- Connect voltmeter between negative battery terminal and engine block. Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than 0.5 volt, replace negative battery cable.
- Connect voltmeter between positive battery terminal and starter solenoid terminal "S" (Black/Yellow wire). Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, repair or replace starter. If voltage is more than 0.5 volt, replace positive battery cable.
STARTER RUNS CONTINUOUSLY WITH IGNITION SWITCH IN LOCK POSITION
Check for short to voltage in Black/Yellow wire between starter solenoid "S" terminal and Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch. If Black/Yellow wire is okay, replace starter solenoid.
CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION (CPP) SWITCH
Locate Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch above clutch pedal, on bracket. Disconnect switch harness connector. Depress clutch pedal fully. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between switch connector terminals. If continuity is present, see ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK & STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK . If continuity is not present, adjust or replace CPP switch as required.
SOLENOID TESTS
| CAUTION | DO NOT engage starter solenoid for longer than 5 seconds during testing, or damage to coil winding may result. |
BRUSHES & SPRINGS
- Using ohmmeter, check continuity between positive and negative brush holders. Continuity should not exist. If continuity exists, replace shorted brush holder assembly.
- Measure brush length. Brush length should be .45-.67" (11.5-17.0 mm). Check brush springs for corrosion or damage. Ensure spring tension is within specification. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-664-S34055246742000031300000) . Ensure brushes move freely in holders.
FIELD COILS
Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between positive brush holder and negative brush holder. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, brush holder is grounded and must be replaced.
OVERRUNNING CLUTCH-PINION GEAR
Ensure overrunning clutch-pinion gear assembly rotates freely in one direction and locks securely in opposite direction. Inspect pinion teeth for wear. Replace if necessary.
