DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
Note. For information on Metro (A/T) models, see STARTERS - METRO & FIREFLY (CANADIAN) (A/T), PRIZM & TRACKER article.
Nippondenso direct-drive starter is used on Metro & Firefly (Canadian) models with manual transaxle. Direct drive starter is a conventional 12-volt, 4-brush-type using an overrunning clutch-pinion drive. The overrunning clutch-pinion drive mounts directly on armature shaft drive end. Starter solenoid is attached to drive housing. When starter is energized, the starter solenoid engages starter pinion drive to flywheel ring gear. A Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch is incorporated within starter circuit to prevent starter operation with transmission in gear, allowing starter operation only when the clutch pedal depressed.
