Metro & Firefly (Canadian) (A/T)
- Put gear selector in Park or Neutral. Connect test light between starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black/Yellow wire) and ground. Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, go to next step. If test light illuminates, replace starter solenoid.
- Locate transaxle range switch on transaxle. Using test light connected to ground, backprobe transaxle range switch connector terminal No. 5 (Black/Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between transaxle range switch and starter solenoid.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe transaxle range switch connector terminal No. 6 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates check connection at transaxle range switch. If connection is okay, replace transaxle range switch.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 18-pin connector C6, terminal No. 15 (Black/Red wire). Turn ignition to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, repair open in Black/Red wire between transaxle range switch and junction block.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 1 (Red/Yellow wire). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, check junction block connection. If connection is okay, replace junction block.
- Using test light connected to ground, backprobe junction block 3-pin connector C1, terminal No. 3 (White wire). If test light does not illuminate with ignition off, go to next step. If test light illuminates, replace ignition switch.
- Locate fuse block in engine compartment mounted to left fender. Check fuse block and junction block connections. Check for an open in White/Green wire between IG (60-amp) fuse in fuse block and junction block 2-pin connector C7, terminal No. 1. If connections and White/Green wire are okay, replace junction block.
Prizm
- Set parking brake. Place gear selector in Park or Neutral position (A/T), or place transmission in Neutral position (M/T). Connect a test light between starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black wire) and ground. Fully depress clutch pedal (if equipped). Turn ignition switch to START position. If test light does not illuminate, turn ignition off and go to next step. If test light illuminates, check for an open in Black/Red wire between battery and starter solenoid "B" terminal. If Black/Red wire is okay, replace starter.
- Locate fuse and relay box No. 1 in left front of engine compartment, near air cleaner. Remove ST relay. (Scheme 9) Using a DVOM, check for an open in Black wire between ST relay cavity No. 2 and "S" terminal of starter solenoid. If an open exists, locate and repair open in Black wire. If an open does not exist, go to next step.
- Using DVOM, check for voltage at ST relay cavity No. 1. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check for an open in circuit between ST relay cavity No. 1, across MAIN (40-amp) fuse, to positive battery voltage. (Scheme 9)See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-665-S18279625092000031300000). If an open exists, locate and repair open as necessary.
- Using DVOM, check for continuity between ST relay cavity No. 4 (White/Black wire) and ground. If continuity does not exist, repair open in White/Black wire between ST relay cavity and ground (G103) located in left front of engine compartment located behind battery. If continuity exists, go to next step.
- Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at ST relay cavity No. 3 with ignition switch in START position. (Scheme 9) If battery voltage exists, replace ST relay. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step.
- Ensure AM 2 (15-amp) fuse located in fuse and relay block No. 1 is okay. Replace if necessary. Check for battery voltage at ST (5-amp) fuse located in junction block No. 2 with ignition switch in START position. (Scheme 9)and (Scheme 10). If battery voltage is present, go to step 9. If battery voltage is not present, go to next step.
- Disconnect fuse and relay block No. 1 wiring harness White 8-pin connector C3, and Black 5-pin connector C8. Remove AM 2 (15-amp) fuse. Ensure an open does not exist between AM2 fuse and terminal No. 8 for connector C3. Ensure an open does not exist between ST relay cavity No. 3 and terminal No. 3 for connector C8. (Scheme 10), (Scheme 11) and (Scheme 12). If an open exists in either circuit, replace fuse and relay block No. 1. If an open does not exist in both circuits, go to next step.
- Disconnect ignition switch White 8-pin connector C3. Check for continuity of Black/Red wire between ignition switch connector terminal No. 7 and fuse and relay block No. 1 connector C3 terminal No. 8. (Scheme 11)and (Scheme 13). If continuity exists, replace ignition switch. If continuity does not exist, locate and repair open or shorted condition in Black/Red wire as necessary.
- Remove ST (5-amp) fuse from junction block No. 2. (Scheme 10) Check for continuity between ST fuse and ignition switch connector terminal No. 8 (Red wire). (Scheme 13) If continuity does not exist, locate and repair open or shorted condition in Red wire. If continuity exists, go to next step.
- On A/T models, disconnect Park Neutral Position (PNP) switch. On M/T models, disconnect Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch. On all models, check for an open in Black/White wire between ST (5-amp) fuse terminal and CPP switch or PNP switch connector. If an open exists, locate and repair open in Black/White wire. If an open does not exist, go to next step.
- On A/T models, check continuity between PNP switch terminals No. 2 and 3. On M/T models, check continuity between terminals of CPP switch with clutch pedal fully depressed. On all models, if continuity does not exist, replace PNP or CPP switch. If continuity exists, go to next step.
- Check for an open in Black wire between PNP switch connector or CPP connector and fuse and relay block No. 1 Black 5-pin connector C8 terminal No. 3. (Scheme 11) If an open exists, locate and repair open in Black wire. If an open does not exist, replace fuse and relay block No. 1.

ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK OR CRANKS SLOWLY & STARTER SOLENOID CLICKS
- Connect voltmeter across battery terminals. Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is 9.6 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 9.6 volts, perform battery load test. If battery is not okay, replace battery. If battery is okay, repair or replace starter.
- Connect voltmeter between negative battery terminal and engine block. Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is more than 0.5 volt, replace negative battery cable.
- Connect voltmeter between positive battery terminal and starter solenoid "S" terminal (Black wire on Prizm; Black/Yellow wire on all other models). Crank engine and measure voltage. If voltage is less than 0.5 volt, repair or replace starter. If voltage is more than 0.5 volt, replace positive battery cable.
Metro & Firefly (Canadian)
Check for short to voltage in Black/Yellow wire between starter solenoid and transmission range selector. If Black/Yellow wire is okay, replace starter solenoid.
Check for short to voltage in Black wire between starter solenoid "B" terminal and ST relay. Repair as necessary. If Black wire is okay, replace starter solenoid.
CLUTCH PEDAL POSITION (CPP) SWITCH (M/T)
Locate Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) switch above clutch pedal on bracket. Disconnect switch harness connector. Depress clutch pedal fully. Using ohmmeter, check continuity between switch connector terminals. If continuity is present, see ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK & STARTER SOLENOID DOES NOT CLICK . If continuity is not present, adjust or replace CPP switch as required.
PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH OR TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH (A/T)

SOLENOID TESTS
| CAUTION | DO NOT engage starter solenoid for longer than 5 seconds during testing, or damage to coil winding may result. |
BRUSHES & SPRINGS
- Measure brush length, and replace brushes if less than specification. See «STARTER SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-665-S27663363882000031300000) . Check brush springs for corrosion or damage. Ensure spring tension is within specification.
- Check condition of brush holders, spring clips and insulation between positive and negative holders. Repair or replace as required. Ensure brushes move freely in holders. Before installing new brushes, buff commutator end of brush using emery cloth.
- Using ohmmeter, check continuity between positive and negative brush holders. Continuity should not exist. If continuity exists, replace shorted brush holder assembly.
FIELD COILS
Check field coils in housing for open circuits. Ensure continuity exists between field lead wire and field coil brush lead. If continuity is not present, replace field coil. Check field coils for short circuits. If shorts exist, replace defective field coil.
OVERRUNNING CLUTCH-PINION GEAR
Ensure overrunning clutch-pinion gear assembly rotates freely in one direction and locks securely in opposite direction. Inspect pinion teeth for wear. Replace if necessary.
