| CAUTION | Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components. |
Removal
- Drain the coolant.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the air intake duct.
- Disconnect the radiator hose.
- Remove the thermostat housing.
- Remove the thermostat. Clean all sealing surfaces
Installation
Note. Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the thermostat.
- Install the thermostat housing using a new gasket.
- Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
- Connect the radiator hose.
- Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
- Refill the coolant.
- Start the engine.
- Check for leaks.
- Drain the engine coolant.
- Remove the fuel injector sight shield.
- Remove the upper filler panel.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Remove the throttle body. See «THROTTLE BODY (SFI)»(ref-131401-S17106397722001122800000) .
- Remove the EGR pipe.
- Disconnect the inlet radiator hose from housing.
- Disconnect the outlet radiator hose from the thermostat housing.
- Remove the water pump belt cover.
- Remove the water pump belt tensioner.
- Remove the water pump belt.
- Remove the throttle body spacer.
- Remove the EGR.
- Disconnect the park neutral switch.
- Remove the heater pipe.
- Remove the water pump cover.
- Remove the thermostat housing crossover from the engine.
- Install the thermostat housing crossover on the engine. Tighten the thermostat housing crossover bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).
- Install the water pump cover. Tighten the water pump cover to 10 Nm (89 lb in).
- Connect the park neutral switch.
- Install the EGR.
- Install the throttle body spacer.
- Install the water pump belt (4).
- Install the water pump belt tensioner (3).
- Install the water pump belt cover.
- Connect the outlet radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
- Connect the inlet radiator hose to the housing.
- Install the EGR pipe.
- Install the heater pipe.
- Install the throttle body. See «THROTTLE BODY (SFI)»(ref-131401-S17106397722001122800000) .
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Install the upper filler panel.
- Install the fuel injector sight shield.
- Refill the engine cooling system.
Note. Water Pump Remover/Installer (J-38816) is required to turn pump assembly.
Drain cooling system. Move engine torque strut for access. Remove air cleaner. Remove water pump belt cover (4 bolts). Remove water pump drive belt, by-pass hose, lower hose and pump cover. Using Remover/Installer (J-38816), rotate water pump assembly clockwise, and remove from vehicle. see scheme 30
Clean water pump assembly and pump housing sealing surfaces. Using a NEW "O" ring, install water pump assembly and tighten counterclockwise to 74 ft. lbs. (100 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten water pump cover bolts (4) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.
Scheme 10
- Remove the transmission. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T»(ref-1149) in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSIONS.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove thirteen oil pan bolts and remove the pan.
- The gasket is reusable unless damaged. Do not remove the gasket from the oil pan groove unless replacement is required.
- Install the new oil pan seal if required by starting the seal into the pan groove and working the seal into the groove in both directions. Once the seal is exposed to the oil it will expand and no longer stay in the groove without wrinkles. If this condition exists, replace it with a new seal.
- Position the oil pan to the crankcase. NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location.
- Install thirteen oil pan bolts. Tighten the oil pan bolts to 10 N.m (89 lb in) in sequence shown. see scheme 31
- Install the transmission. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - A/T»(ref-1149) in TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSIONS.
- Refill the engine oil.
