Replacement steering columns are only available as complete assemblies. Servicing is not possible.
The steering lock housing can be re-installed.
The following list pertains to (Scheme 1).
- Retaining plate
- Shear bolt, 15 Nm
- Steering column
- Ignition lock
- Combi bolt, 22 Nm
- Power steering gear
Note. Never detach mesh section between top and bottom part of steering column. Movement beyond a range of +/- 5 cm can lead to damage to the steering column. To avoid damage, please refer to TRANSPORT LOCK .
Transport lock
New replacement steering columns are installed with a transport safeguard.
This transport safeguard must be removed after installing the steering column in the vehicle.
If a used steering column is removed and re-installed, an assembly aid is required during removal in order to prevent upper and lower sections of steering column from pulling apart while being detached from the steering gear. Use a cable tie or length of wire as an assembly aid.
If upper and lower part of steering column are pulled too far apart or are pushed inside each other the splines will become separated.
Rattling noise may subsequently be encountered if mesh section is no longer in its original installation position.
Visual inspection
- Check whether steering column components reveal signs of damage.
Checking operation
- Check whether steering column can be turned without catching or stiffness.
- Check whether steering column can be adjusted both longitudinally and in height.
- Check gap -dimension A- between slide and mounting bracket. Dimension -A-; Maximum 0.5 mm or less
- If dimension -A- is larger than 0.5 mm, the steering column is damaged and must be replaced.
Special tools and equipment
- V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench
Removing
- Remove driver's side airbag unit. See appropriate Air Bag Restraint System article
- Detach lever for steering column adjustment
- Remove the airbag steering wheel. See appropriate Air Bag Restraint System article.

An assembly lock is required to prevent top and bottom parts of steering column being pulled apart when pulling off steering gear.
If upper and lower part of steering column are pulled apart too far or are pushed inside one another the splines will become separated.
Rattling noise may subsequently be encountered if mesh section is no longer in its original installation position.
- Pull wire or cable tie through hole in lower section of steering column (arrow) and spring.
- The wire or cable tie can be pulled through spring and universal joint.
- Detach connectors from ignition/starter switch and reader coil.
For vehicles with automatic transmission, locking cable must be disengaged

Any air remaining in steering system escapes automatically while driving after approx. 10 to 20 km (6-12 miles).
Note. The steering system must be checked for leaks after assembly operations and in case of a lack of hydraulic fluid level in reservoir.
- Start engine.
- Turn steering wheel from lock to lock in both directions and hold briefly.
- This builds up maximum possible pressure.
Note. To avoid pump damage, the steering wheel must not be held at the end stop for longer than 10 seconds during this check.
Check the following components for leaks in this position
- Steering pinion oil seal on valve housing of steering gear.
- All line connections.
- Rack oil seals
This check can only be carried out with boots pushed back.
- Open spring clip and hose clamp on boot.
- Push boot back.
Steering gear must be replaced if fluid is visible in steering gear housing and/or in boot.
Power steering pump repair work is not planned. In the event of complaints, perform a pressure test and leak test to establish the cause. Replace the power steering pump if malfunction is found.
Note. Always check steering system for leaks in the event of a lack of fluid in the reservoir. If a leak is found in the area of the line connections, start by checking connections for leaks, re-tighten if necessary and wipe dry. Replacement pumps are supplied without fluid. Prior to installation they are to be filled with hydraulic fluid G 002 000 and turned by hand to avoid any possibility of noise while driving or pump damage. Type: Hydraulic fluid G 002 000
