Lock cylinder and ignition/starter switch, servicing

CAUTIONBefore beginning repairs on the electrical system: Obtain the anti-theft radio security code. Switch the ignition off. Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. See TELEMATICS . After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual. After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. See TELEMATICS . Switch ignition off and disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.

Note. Steps after re-connecting voltage supply. See BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS .

Note. Induction coil for anti-theft immobilizer is connected to lock cylinder and cannot be replaced individually. If the induction coil is faulty, the lock cylinder must be replaced. Observe induction coil specifications when replacing lock cylinders. See READER COIL, REPLACING .

  1. Remove steering column switch: See «STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE (SCSM), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/steering-column-switches/#lights-switches-exterior-except-cabriolet) .
  2. Check whether the electrical harness connector at induction coil is disconnected.

Vehicles with automatic transmission

  1. Place selector lever in position "P".
  2. Turn ignition key to "Ignition ON" position -arrow-. see scheme 66
  3. Then lift locking bracket -1- slightly and pull locking cable - 2- from ignition lock housing.

All

Note. The spare key is necessary for removing the lock cylinder, because the following sequence can only be performed using an ignition key with flat key grip, i.e. without illumination and without remote control.

  1. Turn replacement key to "Ignition ON" position, this lines up the cutout in the trim -arrow- with the hole in ignition lock. NOTE: The illustration shows the correct lock position without the ignition key.
  2. Insert steel wire or pin (approx. 1.5 mm diameter) into hole -1- up to stop while pulling lock cylinder -2- with induction coil out of steering lock housing -3-.

Note. Always observe specifications for replacing induction coil for anti-theft immobilizer if lock cylinder must be replaced. See READER COIL, REPLACING .

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following

  1. Insert spare key into lock cylinder and turn to position "ignition on".
  1. Re-insert steel wire or pin -1- into the hole in front of lock up to stop.
  2. Slide lock cylinder -2- with induction coil into steering lock housing -3-.
  3. Then pull out wire and press in lock cylinder firmly until catch engages audibly.
  4. Install steering column switch: See «STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE (SCSM), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/steering-column-switches/#lights-switches-exterior-except-cabriolet) .
  5. Connect electrical harness connector at induction coil for anti-theft immobilizer when installing steering column switch.
  1. Remove steering column switch: See «STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE (SCSM), REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/steering-column-switches/#lights-switches-exterior-except-cabriolet) .
  2. Check whether the electrical harness connector at reading coil is disconnected.
  3. Disconnect harness connector -1- at ignition/starter switch.
  4. Remove sealing paint from both mounting screws -arrows-.
  5. Loosen mounting bolts -arrows- somewhat and pull ignition/starter switch out of steering lock housing -2-.

Installation is reverse of removal, note the following

Note. Make sure ignition/starter switch and lock cylinder are both in the same position, for example "ignition on" when installing.

  1. Secure mounting bolts -arrows- at steering lock housing -2- with sealing paint.
