Front seat, assembly overview

Note. Before disconnecting the battery: obtain the radio code.

The following list pertains to (Scheme 53).

  1. Front seat Removing: Remove front seat rail covers. See «FRONT SEAT RAIL COVER, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__front-seat-rail-cover-assembly-overview) . Remove rear seat rail covers. See «REAR SEAT RAIL COVER, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__rear-seat-rail-cover-assembly-overview) Move front seat -1- up and back as far as possible. Unscrew front bolts -2- (2x). Move seat forward. Unscrew rear bolts -2- (2x). CAUTION: Before removal of seat: Detach battery ground (GND) strap. Tilt front seat -1- back. Detach connectors. See «CONNECTORS, DISCONNECTING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__connectors-disconnecting) . Connect airbag adapter. See «VAS 6036 AIRBAG ADAPTER, CONNECTING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__vas-6036-airbag-adapter-connecting) . Installing: Installation is in reverse order of removal.
  2. Bolts (4x) Tightening torque 40 Nm

Front seat with faulty forward and backward seat adjustment motor or defective control unit, removing and installing

Note. If possible: Move seat up. For greater clarity, the illustration shows the seat pan without padding or backrest.

  1. Bolts (4x) Tightening torque 17 Nm
  2. Motor mounting plate
  3. Bolts (2x) Tightening torque 19 Nm
  4. Upper seat pan support Removing: Unscrew bolts -3- (2x). Fold seat forward. Unscrew bolts -1- (4x). Detach backrest with top support of seat pan. For faulty control unit: Detach connector at forward and backward seat adjustment motor. Move the forward and backward seat adjustment motor with an external power source until the bolts are visible. Unscrew the bolts. Remove control unit. See «CONTROL UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__control-unit-removing-and-installing) . For faulty forward and backward seat adjustment motor: Detach connector -3-. Unscrew bolts -4- (2x) from forward and backward seat adjustment motor. Disengage forward and backward seat adjustment motor -2- from the two shafts -1- and -5-. Move both seat rails using a power screwdriver via the long shaft -5-, until the concealed bolts are visible. Unscrew the bolts. Replace the lower seat support with forward and backward seat adjustment motor.

Front seat rail cover, assembly overview

The following list pertains to (Scheme 56).

  1. Front seat
  2. Seat rail covers (2x) Removing: Move front seat -1- back as far as possible. Remove securing clips -3- (2x). Remove seat rail covers -2- (2x). Installing: Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Rear seat rail cover, assembly overview

  3. Seat rail covers (3x) Removing: Move front seat -1- forward as far as possible. Remove securing clips -2- (4x). Remove seat rail covers -3- (3x). Installing: Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Connectors, disconnecting

Note. The mechanic must electrostatically discharge him/herself before disconnecting ignition and ground (GND) wires (briefly touch closing wedge for door or body).

The following list pertains to (Scheme 58).

  1. Removing: Tilt front seat -1- back. Remove connection point cover -6- upward. Press tab on airbag connector -5- inboard side and remove airbag connector -5-. Connect airbag adapter. See «VAS 6036 AIRBAG ADAPTER, CONNECTING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__vas-6036-airbag-adapter-connecting) . Press tab on power supply connector -4- inboard side and remove power supply connector -4-. Press tab on seat heating connector -3- inboard side and remove seat heating connector -3-. For vehicles with buckle interrogation: Press in tab on buckle interrogation connector -2- inboard side and remove buckle interrogation connector -2-.

VAS 6036 Airbag adapter, connecting

Note. The mechanic must electrostatically discharge him/herself before disconnecting ignition and ground (GND) wires (briefly touch closing wedge for door or body).

CAUTIONThe airbag adapter VAS 5094 must remain connected to the seat until the seat is reinstalled.

The following list pertains to (Scheme 59).

  1. Seat connector power supply connector (red)
  2. Airbag adapter power supply connector (red)
  3. Airbag adapter connector (yellow)
  4. Airbag connector (yellow) Detach the ignition and ground (GND) wires. Connect the airbag connector -4- to the airbag adapter connector -3-. If present: Connect the airbag adapter power supply connector -2- to the seat connector power supply connector -1-.

Connector for side airbag, detaching

  1. Press retainer tab -3- of airbag connector -2- out of airbag adapter connector -1- and detach airbag connector -2-.

Note. After connecting the battery observe the necessary measures. See BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS . If airbag malfunction warning light -K75- signals a malfunction after assembly, the DTC memory must be interrogated with vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, then erased and re-interrogated.

Front seat backrest, assembly overview

  1. Backrest Removing: Unscrew bolt -6-. Twist clip -7- upward. Unscrew bolts -3- (4x). Tilt backrest -1- forward onto seat. Move padding to one side and carefully lift wiring harness -2- out of seat pan -8-. Remove backrest -1-. Installing: To install clip -5-: Screw bolt -6- firmly to plastic washer -4-. Always use new bolts -3- (4x). Before inserting bolts -3- (4x) recut the thread in the backrest frame. For memory seat: After installing seat in vehicle perform basic setting of backrest and seat.

Removing

  1. Press the handle -1- upward.
  2. Release the tab -2- in direction of arrow using a screwdriver and, at the same time, pull off handle -1-.
  3. Unclip the cover plate -1-.
  4. Detach connector -3-.
  5. Remove the cover plate -1-.

Note. In order to be able to press in the handle, the metal pin in the cover plate aperture must be pushed upward.

Installing

  1. Install the easy-entry facility in the reverse sequence. Ensure that the handle -2- engages.

Bowden cable for backrest lock, assembly overview

Note. For the sake of illustration, the seat is depicted without seat pan in the illustration.

Operate the Easy Entry handle of entry assistance and fold backrest forward. Disengage eyelets -4- (2x) at bottom left and right, using pliers. Using a screwdriver, pry out left and right retainers -3- (2x). Remove Bowden cables -2- (2x) upward. Slide seat cover upward in direction of arrow. Disengage Bowden cables at brackets -5- and -6-. Installing NOTE: For vehicles up to 05.02, VIN: 8H 3K 002 450: To prevent malfunctions of headrest and seatback adjustment, apply a cable tie -7-. Install Bowden cable for backrest lock in reverse order of removal. Adjust Bowden cables -2- (2x) using adjustment devices -1- (2x). Ensure that the lower pins at left and right are released simultaneously when the Easy Entry handle of entry assistance is operated.

Slide microswitch -4- only far enough so that headrest is moved downward and switched off when release lever is lifted 1/3. Check function of headrest at adjustment switch: Headrest is not activated when backrest release lever is lifted to 1/3. Headrest is activated when release lever is in rest position. Correct the position of microswitch -4- as necessary and check its function again.
  5. Catches (2x)

Note. For improved clarity, the eye with Bowden cable on pin -4- is not shown in the illustration.

  1. Pull out cable -2-.
  2. Unscrew nuts -3- (2x).
  3. Remove the backrest release microswitch -1-. Installing: NOTE: After attaching the backrest release microswitch, -1- actuate the handle of the easy-entry facility. Ensure that metal tab -5- is in contact with pin -4- over the entire adjustment range. Install the backrest release microswitch -1- in the reverse sequence.

Backrest (standard seat), replacing

Note. Sports backrest only is available as replacement part. Convert the sports backrest for the standard seat.

The following list pertains to see scheme 24.

  1. Sports backrest Conversion: Detach wire clips -2- (2x) from sports backrest -1-. Paint layer must be made good again according to the Workshop Manual "Vehicle Painting" and, if necessary, the protection measures against corrosion must be carried out according to binder "Surface Technology, Chemical Working Materials".
  2. Wire clips (2x)

Seat pan (standard seat), replacing

Note. Sports seat pan only is available as replacement part. Convert the sports seat pan for the standard seat.

The following list pertains to see scheme 25.

  1. Sports seat pan Conversion: Detach wire clips -2- (2x) from sports seat pan -1-. Paint layer must be made good again according to the Workshop Manual "Vehicle Painting" and, if necessary, the protection measures against corrosion must be carried out according to binder "Surface Technology, Chemical Working Materials".

See appropriate Air Bag Restraint System article. Press clip -3- together and remove clip -3-. Pry out the retainer -2- from the inside. Detach the side airbag guide -1-.   3. Unscrew bolts -5- (5x). Tightening torque 1.5 Nm
  4. Detach seat adjustment switch -2-.
  5. Remove the connection board with connectors -1-.

  3. Unscrew bolts -4- (2x). Tightening torque 0.4 Nm.
  4. Detach switch for 4-way lumbar support -3-.
  1. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Control unit, removing and installing

Note. The control unit for the memory seat and the electric seat is under the driver's seat.

If the control unit is defective, the top support of the seat pan and backrest must be removed. See FRONT SEAT WITH FAULTY FORWARD AND BACKWARD SEAT ADJUSTMENT MOTOR OR DEFECTIVE CONTROL UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

  1. Remove seat. See «FRONT SEAT, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/seats/#seats-frames-cabriolet__front-seat-assembly-overview) .
  2. Unscrew bolts -2- (2x). Tightening torque 1.5 Nm.
  3. Turn control unit -1- over.
  4. Disengage the retaining clip -4- and remove the connector -5-.
  5. Press the retainer tabs -3- (2x) in and remove the connector -2-.
  6. Remove the control unit -1-.
  1. Installation is in reverse order of removal.

Forward and backward seat adjustment motor, assembly overview

Note. If the motor is faulty, the top support of the seat pan must be replaced. See FRONT SEAT WITH FAULTY FORWARD AND BACKWARD SEAT ADJUSTMENT MOTOR OR DEFECTIVE CONTROL UNIT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Using an 11 mm socket, knock spring washer -5- onto shaft -4- (illustration detail -C-). Tighten the bolt on the backrest adjustment motor and attach the connector. For memory seat: After installing the seat, perform basic setting of backrest and seat.

  1. Press cover down and using a screwdriver, pry out clip -2- in direction of arrow.
  2. Pull out head restraints -1- (2x).
