Instrument cluster

CAUTIONBefore beginning repairs on the electrical system: Obtain the anti-theft radio security code. Switch the ignition off. Disconnect the battery Ground (GND) strap. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. See TELEMATICS . After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code and check operation of anti-theft radio. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual. After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. See TELEMATICS .
  1. Disconnect battery Ground strap with ignition switched off.

Note. Steps before re-connecting voltage supply, see BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS .

Fault message "dEF" on trip computer display

If control module in instrument cluster detects a DTC in permanent memory, letters "dEF" will appear on trip computer display.

  1. If "dEF" is displayed, replace instrument cluster. See «INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/gauges-instrument-panels/#instrument-systems-except-cabriolet) .

Special tools and equipment

  1. Hook for front end 3370

Removing

Note. Instrument cluster is not to be disassembled.

  1. Determine input values when replacing instrument cluster: Do this using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
  2. Pull steering wheel with adjusting mechanism fully out and move it downward.
  3. Remove steering wheel: See «STEERING COLUMN, ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/steering-column-switches/#steering) .
  4. Pull cover -1- at bottom of instrument cluster off to rear -arrows-.
  5. Remove bolts -arrows-.
  6. Pull instrument cluster out to front using special tool 3370.
  7. Release catches on connectors -arrow- and unplug connectors.

Installing

Install in reverse order, paying attention to the following

  1. After installation, perform functional test of instrument cluster.
  2. If functional test is OK, enter input values for instrument cluster

Do this using vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
