General information

CAUTIONBefore beginning repairs on the electrical system
  1. Obtain anti-theft radio security code if necessary.
  2. Switch the ignition off.
  3. Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap.
  4. On vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-off the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module prior to disconnecting vehicle battery. Use VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System in mode "Guided Fault Finding". See «EMERGENCY BATTERY, SWITCHING OFF/ON»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/communication-devices/#navigation-system-except-cabriolet__emergency-battery-switching-offon) .
  5. After reconnecting vehicle battery, re-code anti-theft radio if necessary, and check operation. Also check operation of clock and power windows according to Repair Manual and/or Owner's Manual.
  6. After reconnecting vehicle battery on vehicles equipped with Audi Telematics by OnStar(R), switch-on the emergency (back-up) battery for the Telematic/Telephone Control Module. Use VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System in mode "Guided Fault Finding". Note. Further measures after reconnecting the voltage supply: See PROCEDURE AFTER INTERRUPTION OF VOLTAGE SUPPLY (1.8L), or PROCEDURE FOLLOWING INTERRUPTION OF VOLTAGE SUPPLY (3.0L).

The Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module - J527- is a part of the overall system "steering column switch module". For example, it receives signals from the steering column switch.

Perform OBD program on -J527- using VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System in mode "Guided Fault Finding".

Before troubleshooting or servicing, technicians must be familiar with the functions and operation specifics of the applicable standard or optional radio and telephone system as they pertain to the multi-function steering wheel. Always read the vehicle/radio owner's manual and review the radio, tape player, CD player/changer and telephone system functions as the pertain to the multi-function steering wheel.

Function description

Function switches/buttons integrated into the multi-function steering wheel allow the driver to safely operate the radio, telephone and Tiptronic controls (models equipped with automatic transmission). In addition, the steering wheel is electrically heated.

Integrated electronics the steering wheel regulate the steering wheel heating, transmission of function switch/button operations to the vehicle CAN-Bus network and dimming (illumination) of the function buttons.

The control module for the multi-function steering wheel controls radio, radio/navigation, telephone, instrument cluster, steering wheel heating and Tiptronic (automatic transmission) functions.

The center display in the instrument cluster shows the currently selected radio channel, and when the telephone is being used, the telephone number being called (from the telephone memory). The display also indicates if either the radio plays a cassette tape (display shows: "TAPE < >", or if the CD changer is in operation (display shows: "CD 02" and the CD track number being played.

The multi-function steering wheel is a part of the overall system "steering column switch module" and sends data to the Steering Column Electronic Systems Control Module - J527-.

On Board Diagnostic (OBD)

The multi-function steering wheel has On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capabilities.

The multi-function steering wheel control module has a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory. If a malfunction occurs in one of the components or wires which is monitored by the system, a record of the type of malfunction is stored in DTC memory.

Perform OBD program using VAS 5051 Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System in mode "Guided Fault Finding".

Removing

WARNINGSpecial safety precautions apply to vehicles equipped with airbags. Refer to appropriate Air Bag article in Restraints .
  1. Unlatch steering column adjustment. Pull steering wheel as far out and up as possible.
  2. Remove airbag unit Refer to appropriate Air Bag article in Restraints .
  3. Carefully flip airbag unit forward.
  4. Carefully disconnect electrical connections -1- and -2- at airbag unit.
  5. Remove airbag unit.
  6. Disconnect applicable electrical connections -3- and remove screws -arrows- at desired switch.
  7. Remove switch toward front.

  1. Where applicable, remove Tiptronic switch -1- by first disconnecting electrical connection -2-.
  2. Press desired switch assembly -1- towards center of steering wheel to remove.

Installing

Note. During installation, make sure that connecting wire of connector -3- is in guides and is not pinched.

  1. Install in reverse order of removal.
