Note. On some engines, the drive belt idler pulley may have been deleted. If the drive belt idler pulley has been removed. (Scheme 20)for proper drive belt routing. Update information is from Audi Technical Service Bulletin GROUP 13, N0. 94-02.
Removal
- Drain coolant. See «COOLANT DRAINING & FILLING»(ref-122049-S30498127772004020500000).
- Remove lock carrier plate. See «LOCK CARRIER PLATE»(ref-122049-S25856342492004020600000).
- Remove front bumper. See «FRONT BUMPER»(ref-122049-S05373641212004020900000).
- Remove cooling fan and shroud. (Scheme 21)
- Remove radiator mounting nuts.
- Remove radiator hoses.
- Lift radiator from vehicle.

Installation
- Install radiator in reverse order of removal. Tighten to bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-122049-S33388032592001091300000). Ensure lower radiator hose is installed in proper position (Scheme 22)
- Fill and bleed air from cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-122049-S36487581742001091300000).

- Remove accessory drive belt guard. Hold accessory drive belt in place with Mandrel (3204). Using a 15-mm wrench at accessory drive belt tensioner, slacken and remove accessory drive belt. (Scheme 20)
- Drain coolant. See «COOLANT DRAINING & FILLING»(ref-122049-S30498127772004020500000).
- Remove thermostat housing from under toothed belt cover. see scheme 23
- Lift out housing, and remove thermostat.
- Install thermostat with NEW "O" ring in reverse order of removal. Vent valve must be installed facing up (arrow). see scheme 7 Tighten to bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-122049-S33388032592001091300000).
- Fill and bleed air from cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-122049-S36487581742001091300000).
