Explanation
Not all the parameters that are described need to be implemented in the control module. These vary from system to system.
The number of parameters can also vary between diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
Frozen values are parameter values that are stored when a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored.
Engine running, status
The status displays whether the engine was running when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
No = the engine was not running
Yes = the engine was running
Passenger compartment temperature, value
Measurement range: -60 to 192 °C.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value on the control area network (CAN).
Outside temperature, value
Measurement range: -128 to 124 °C.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value on the control area network (CAN).
Battery voltage, central electronic module (CEM), value
Measurement range: 5 to 30 V.
Normal value when the generator (GEN) is charging: 13.0 to 14.5 V.
The parameter indicates the supply voltage to the central electronic module (CEM) when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value on the control area network (CAN).
Distance, value
Measurement range: 0 to 1,000,000 km.
The parameter indicates the mileage when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value on the control area network (CAN).
Incorrect car configuration parameter, value
The parameter indicates which parameter in the car configuration data is incorrect.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value from the central electronic module (CEM) on the Control area network (CAN).
Evaporator temperature, value
Measurement range -100 to 100 °C.
If the air conditioning (A/C) has not been activated and the engine has cooled, the value must correspond to the ambient temperature.
The climate control module (CCM) obtains the value from the evaporator temperature sensor.
Passenger compartment temperature sensor
Measurement range -40 to 90 °C.
The value must correspond to the ambient temperature.
The parameter indicates the value from the passenger compartment temperature sensor.
Status of keypad
The parameter indicates whether the climate control module (CCM) detects that buttons on the keypad were pressed or not when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
Not pressed = the button is not pressed in
Pressed = the button is pressed in
Status of LEDs
The parameter indicates whether the climate control module (CCM) recognizes that the LEDs for buttons on the keypad should be lit or not when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
Not lit = the LED must not be lit
Lit = the LED must be lit
Status, seat heater right front
The parameter indicates the status of the seat heating module (SHM) right front when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
The climate control module (CCM) receives the information via LIN communication.
OK, heating off = seat heating module (SHM) functioning, heating off.
OK, heating on = seat heating module (SHM) functioning, heating on.
Incorrect status 1 = incorrect heater pad.
Incorrect status 2 = incorrect temperature sensor.
Incorrect status 3 = seat heating module (SHM) overheated.

Desired temperature left seat heater, value
Measurement range 0 to 60 °C.
The parameter indicates the value of the desired seat temperature that the climate control module (CCM) transmits to the seat heating module (SHM).
The climate control module (CCM) calculates the value based on activation of the seat heater button.
Desired temperature right seat heater, value
Measurement range 0 to 60 °C.
The parameter indicates the value of the desired seat temperature that the climate control module (CCM) transmits to the seat heating module (SHM).
The climate control module (CCM) calculates the value based on activation of the seat heater button.
AQS signal, status
The parameter displays the signal from the air quality sensor (AQS) when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored. The climate control module (CCM) uses the signal to regulate the damper motor module (DMM) recirculation.
Off = no increase or reduction in pollutant level.
Level 1 = slow increase in pollutant level.
Level 2 = medium increase in pollutant level.
Level 3 = rapid increase in pollutant level.
Air quality sensor (AQS), status
The parameter displays the status of the air quality sensor (AQS) when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
Warm-up phase = the sensor is being heated by the heater element.
Faulty heater pad.
Faulty sensor.
Calibration commenced.
Fault information, status
The parameter indicates the status of the damper motor module (DMM) when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
The climate control module (CCM) receives the information via LIN communication.
Faulty status 1 = faulty Hall sensor in the damper motor.
Faulty status 2 = fault when storing the position of the damper motor.
Incorrect status 3 = unexpected stop when operating the damper motor.
Faulty status 4 = over voltage or overheating in the damper motor.
Faulty status 5 = communication fault in the LIN bus.
Faulty status 6 = hardware fault in the driver circuit.
Faulty status 7 = hardware fault in the driver circuit.
Faulty status 8 = voltage drop in the damper motor.
Control modules on LIN bus 1, status
The parameter indicates which control modules the climate control module (CCM) detects as being installed on LIN bus 1.
Not installed = the climate control module (CCM) cannot communicate with the control module.
Installed = the climate control module (CCM) is able to communicate with the control module.
Control modules on LIN bus 2, status
The parameter indicates which control modules the climate control module (CCM) detects as being installed on LIN bus 2.
Not installed = the climate control module (CCM) cannot communicate with the control module.
Installed = the climate control module (CCM) is able to communicate with the control module.
Configured control modules for LIN bus 1, status
The parameter indicates which control modules are configured to be present on LIN bus 1.
Should not exist = the control module must not be on LIN bus 1.
Should exist = the control module must be on LIN bus 1.
Configured control modules for LIN bus 2, status
The parameter indicates which control modules are configured to be present on LIN bus 2.
Should not exist = the control module must not be on LIN bus 2.

Power supply, value
The parameter indicates the power supply to the climate control module (CCM) when the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored.
Measurement range 0 to 50 V.
Normal value approximately 12 V (battery voltage).

Reading off input and output signals
This function can be used to continuously read off the values and status of the rear electronic module (REM) input and output signals.
The following parameters can be read off
- status of the locking relay and unlocking relay for the left rear door
- status of the locking relay and unlocking relay for the right rear door
- status of the relay for the rear folding head restraint
- the status of the trunk lid pop-up relay (4 doors)
- status of the locking relay and unlocking relay for the fuel tank filler cover
- status of the rear fog lamp relay
- status of the rear fog lamp relay, German version and trailer
- status of the back-up lamp relay
- status of the rear windshield heating relay
- power supply from the rear electronic module (REM)
- fuel level, left and right tank halves
- input signal from the pressure sensor (CNG), Full (200bar): 4.5V Empty (0 bar): 0.5V)
- input signal from the temperature sensor (CNG) (5V to 0.5V) (0°C~4.5V, 25°C~3.6V)
- lamp fault. Indicates whether any bulb has blown. Parking lamp groups 1 and 2, cover the left and right rear parking lamps.
- the power supply to the inclination sensor module (ISM) (low, high). High when the car is alarmed, otherwise low
- Inclination sensor module (ISM), alarm status. Indicates whether the inclination sensor module (ISM) has deployed the alarm
- Inclination sensor module (ISM), x/y status. Indicates whether the inclination sensor module (ISM) has deployed first in the X or Y axis
- the status of the trunk lid handle, (pop up, no action) (4 doors)
- current, bulb failure warning sensor group 1 (left rear parking lamps). The rear electronic module (REM) detects lamp faults when the current is below 0.6A (4 doors) / 0.45A (5 doors)
- current, bulb failure warning sensor group 2 (right rear parking lamps). The rear electronic module (REM) detects lamp faults when the current is below 0.6A (4 doors) / 0.45A (5 doors)
- current, lamp fault rear fog lamp. The rear electronic module (REM) detects lamp faults when the current is below 1.5A
- Central electronic module (CEM) driver brake (off, on). Checks the input signal from the stop lamp driver from the central electronic module (CEM) to the rear electronic module (REM)
- stop lamp check (lamp on, lamp off). Checks whether the rear electronic module (REM) transmits a signal to activate the stop lamp relay
- current, lamp fault, stop lamp. The rear electronic module (REM) detects lamp faults when the current is below 3.0 A
- status of back-up gear (idle, engaged)
- status of the relay for the tailgate wiper. Controls starting and stopping the tailgate wiper (5 doors)
- status of the relay for extended X-supply. Controls the power supply to the tailgate wiper (5 doors)
- status relay warming up diesel filter (Diesel)
- status relay 15I in the power supply
- status relay gas tank valve (Bi-fuel)
- cargo compartment lighting output signal (0W - 10W)
- position sensor input signal for the headlamp beam height control (1.7V to 3.2V)
- calibration status of the position sensor for headlamp beam height control
- status seat belt reminder passenger (off/on)
- input signal anode/cathode for seat belt reminder.
Activating components and functions
This function can be used to activate components and functions which affect the outputs on the rear electronic module (REM).

Reading off static data
With this function programmed data can be read off. For the rear electronic module (REM), this indicates primarily which relays should be installed.

Emergency mode, back-up mode "Limp-home"
When a malfunction has occurred in the system that is confirmed (permanent malfunction) and is registered by the control module, modes are activated for certain systems and functions to handle the malfunction.
The purpose of these actions is to "protect" the control system and at the same time retain as much functionality or driving function as possible.
The minor malfunctions do not activate any back-up modes, there are different programs depending on type of malfunction and which control system to which it applies. All control systems do not have emergency modes or back-up modes.
Sometimes emergency modes must be activated immediately when a malfunction is detected, even if there has been no time to confirm and store any diagnostic trouble code. This is to maintain certain function, e. g., in case of malfunction of the mass air floe sensor for the engine management system, when the emergency program tries to prevent the engine from stopping.
HINT: Limp-home, emergency mode or back-up mode that may appear in case of malfunction is described in diagnostic trouble code information under replacement values.
For, e. g., automatic transmission TF-80SC AWD (XC90, B8444S) there are two back-up modes
- Failsafe action (temporary action)
- Emergency/limp-home mode
Failsafe action is activated at the first detection of the malfunction, if the malfunction disappears the system returns to normal function.
Emergency mode is activated in case of less serious malfunctions Limp-home mode is activated for the most serious malfunctions.
The warning light in the driver information module lights up, and a text message is shown in the text window in the driver information module that emergency/limp-home mode has been activated. When the ignition is turned off and on again, no text is shown until the malfunction is detected again.
Note. If the malfunction disappears (intermittent malfunction) the control module returns to normal function first when the ignition is turned on the next time.
For automatic transmission's emergency mode, the following may take place, e. g.
- Adaption function is blocked.
- Lock-up function is blocked.
- Function slipping lock-up is blocked.
- Function neutral check is blocked.
- The transmission only shifts to 3rd gear and reverse gear. All other shifting is blocked.
The above actions will be noticed by the driver since only one gear can be sued. Some may also notice that lock-up is not engaged. Then the vehicle comes to the workshop with a symptom for some form of lost driving function, probably also with the warning light on.
This symptom shall not be confused with the malfunction itself, instead it is a symptom of the back-up mode. The symptom that the malfunction itself causes (it it causes any) may be noticed briefly or not at all.
Note. If the malfunction is confirmed (permanent) it may be that the control module resumes normal function at ignition off and on again (symptom does not exist any longer). First when the malfunction is detected again (diagnostic trouble code test started and conditions fulfilled), the back-up mode is activated. The malfunction may then first be interpreted as if it was intermittent (non-existent or not active).
Frozen values
For every diagnostic trouble code, pre-defined parameters are frozen and stored in the control module. The frozen values are stored immediately after the malfunction has been detected and gives a "picture" of the conditions when the malfunction was stored.
Note. Status identifier, Counter and Frozen values are the most important factors to deciding the malfunction's nature, that is, to decide
- when the malfunction was detected (frozen values, counters)
- what the driving conditions were at the time (frozen values)
- status for the test (self-diagnosis) (status identifier)
- how frequent the malfunction is (counter).
In newer car models, frozen values consist of a number of global (common) general parameters as well as a number of control model-unique parameters. Global may be
- Road distance
- Battery voltage
- Passenger compartment temperature
- Outside temperature
- Engine running
In addition to these, the diagnostic trouble code-unique parameters are stored which are especially selected parameters for the diagnostic trouble code.
Most parameters in the frozen values are the same for all malfunctions and indicate a general condition when a malfunction was detected, for example
- Road distance
- Outside temperature
- Engine speed
- Load
- Coolant temperature
- Vehicle speed
- Battery voltage
- etc.
Some of them have been selected to give a better understanding of the specific malfunction.
Note. When erasing diagnostic trouble codes, stored frozen values are also erased.
HINT: Reading out and interpreting these frozen values make it easier to understand when in time the malfunction occurred, as well as under what driving and environment conditions the malfunction was detected, related to when and how the customer experienced the symptom.

Readiness monitor (certain markets only)
This is a function in Engine control module (ECM) that controls the control module's emission-related sub-system. With the function you can read out if the control module has run all diagnostics for the following sub-systems
- Misfiring
- Fuel system
- Catalytic converter
- Evaporative emission (EVAP) system
- Heated oxygen sensors (HO2S)
- Other related components
Thus, Readiness refers only to if the diagnostics (tests) have been run or not, not if a malfunction was found or not. If a malfunction is found during the test, a diagnostic trouble code is stored and the malfunction light (MIL-light) is lit.
If the tests are run in the driving cycle without detecting a malfunction, then "Readiness" is immediately generated to OK.
However, if a malfunction is found in the driving cycle, then Readiness is generated to Not OK, and another driving cycle is required where the test is run to generate Readiness to OK.
The following alternatives are possible
- Readiness is run (OK), no malfunction detected, which means that the vehicle can be approved in a check.
- Readiness is run (OK), with malfunction detected, which means that the vehicle cannot be approved in a check.
- Readiness is not run (Not OK), which means that the vehicle cannot be approved in a check.
Readiness was originally a requirement from the American authority, United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and is used there for Inspection and maintenance test (IM-test) (corresponds to annual inspection). Depending on legal requirements, the function may also be found on other markets.
