Checking components

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-917F may be stored alone but it is very unusual. Usually it is stored together with one or more other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that indicate faults in any of the signals from the accelerator pedal. If one or several of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) ECM-9180, ECM-918F, ECM-950F, ECM-951F, ECM-9520, ECM-958F and/or ECM-959F are stored together with ECM-917F, continue fault-tracing according to one of these diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Otherwise, continue as follows.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) was stored under operating conditions that means external factors, such as low battery voltage during engine start-up, are suspected to be the cause fault-trace and remedy as necessary. Otherwise, continue as follows.

  1. Check the cable for the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal between Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #1 and Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A56. Check for an open-circuit.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. As the detection time has increased from 0.4to 0.9 seconds, the upgraded software becomes more tolerant towards short intermittent interferences, delays in communication between other CAN connected control modules etc. among other things.

Remedy as necessary.

CAUTIONIn order for Electronic throttle module (ETM) to reset any reconfigurations as well as delete internally stored problems, the following must be performed
  1. Ignition off, wait three minutes so that the main relay / system relay releases the voltage feed to, among other, Electronic throttle module (ETM).
  2. Then turn on the ignition and turn it off again.
  3. Wait another three minutes. If the electric cooling fan is running, you have to wait another two minutes after the electric cooling fan has stopped, to make sure that Electronic throttle module (ETM) has been shut off correctly.

If this is not done correctly, diagnostic trouble codes may remain even after deleting diagnostic trouble codes and any reconfiguration may remain, despite the problem being fixed.

Identifying upgraded software ECM/ETM

Upgraded software for the engine control module (ECM) and electronic throttle module (ETM), available during 2006 or later, can be identified. The updated software has the diagnostic number/software number as set out in the table under USA/Canada market .

CAUTIONFor the USA/Canada market, with turbocharged engines the software of the engine control module (ECM) can be identified using the software number or diagnostic number , depending on the version of the software involved.

The differences between the first version , which is identified by the software number, and the second version , which is identified by the diagnostic number, include the following

  1. Improved driveability after engine control module (ECM) reset. The start values for some system adaptations are adjusted to facilitate handling of aged/worn systems/components after diagnostic trouble code deletion or when the control module has been without power.
  2. Increased hardiness to certain combinations of aging/wear in the system. The work areas for some adaptations are adjusted to better match the aging of certain components.
  3. Supplements as to which faults are to generate a message to the driver.
  4. Improved serviceability (diagnostic trouble code generation) for some intermittent faults that generate driveability problems.

The electronic throttle module (ETM) is identified solely by the diagnostic number.

If the diagnostic number/software number is within the following series, it is the latest software downloaded

  1. Non-turbo engines : Engine control module (ECM) diagnostic number 30785129 - 30785132 or 30785667 and electronic throttle module (ETM) 30785387.
  2. Turbocharged engines : First version, engine control module (ECM) software number 30785203 - 30785240 and electronic throttle module (ETM) diagnostic number 30785388. Second version, engine control module (ECM) diagnostic number 30785372 - 30785378 and electronic throttle module (ETM) diagnostic number 30785388.

Checking components and connections

Non-turbo engines

Diagnostic trouble code ECM-9180 is always stored together with ECM-918F. Fault trace for ECM-918F.

Turbo engines

Check whether the engine control module (ECM) has stored any other diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is.

If, for example, diagnostic trouble code (DTC), ECM-9520 is stored and it was stored at approximately the same time as ECM-9180, this indicates that the Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) have detected a problem with the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal from the accelerator pedal position sensor. Then use the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information from ECM-9520 to determine which type of fault cause could have caused the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

If, however, ECM-959F is stored together with ECM-9180 and ECM-958F is not stored, this indicates that the Engine control module (ECM) has detected that the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is OK, but that the Electronic throttle module (ETM) has detected that the signal is incorrect. Due to this, it is possible to determine if the fault has occurred for longer than 0.5 seconds (1 second for upgraded software), because the signal from the Electronic throttle module (ETM) must be incorrect for more than 0.5 seconds, for ECM-959F to be stored.

  1. Check the cable between Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A56 (#A56) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #1. Check for an open-circuit.

If there is not another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates that the pulse width modulated (PWM) signal is incorrect stored, this means that the signal that reaches the Engine control module (ECM) is OK. It may also be the case that the fault is so short-term that the other diagnostics in the Engine control module (ECM) have not managed to detect the fault. This can depend on whether the engine has been started or not when the fault was detected. If the engine speed was at 0 RPM in the frozen values, this indicates that the fault has been stored for longer than 0.1 seconds, but for less than 0.4 seconds, otherwise ECM-958F would have been stored. If, however the frozen values show that the engine speed was greater than 0 RPM, when the fault occurred, this indicates that the signal that the Engine control module (ECM) receives is OK. Otherwise ECM-9520 would have been stored together with ECM-9180.

  1. Check the cable between Engine control module (ECM) terminal #A56 (#A56) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) terminal #1. Check for an intermittent open-circuit.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. If the fault was stored at a battery voltage lower than 10 V with engine speed at 0 RPM, this indicates that the fault may have occurred when the engine was started. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK.

  1. Check the battery status.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. As the detection time has increased from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds, the upgraded software becomes much more tolerant towards short intermittent interference among other things.

Programming or replacing the engine control module (ECM)

  1. Ignition off. The engine control module (ECM) has registered an internal fault. Replace the engine control module (ECM). See «Engine control module (ECM), replacing»(ref-430961-S10976842282011101900000) . NOTE: After replacing the engine control module (ECM), the throttle unit must be adapted using the vehicle communication input: "Throttle unit adaptation". Remedy as necessary.

Internal fault. Permanent fault

See Internal fault. Permanent fault

Example of use of the frozen values

Faults can be intermittent, which is important to remember when fault-tracing for possible causes. If the fault is not present when the vehicle is in the workshop, a fault cause can be missed as the values can be correct when fault-tracing is carried out. A good indication of when the fault occurred the first time are the frozen values that can be read out using VIDA/Details.

The frozen values are stored immediately after a fault has been detected. Most parameters in the frozen values are the same for all faults and indicates a general status when a fault has been detected, e. g. engine speed, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed and battery voltage. Some of them have been selected to give a better understanding of the specific fault. Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) ECM-903F Throttle position (TP) can be used as an example of how the frozen values can be used (this is only one example and there may be deviations in reality).

One of the checks given in fault-tracing is "voltage supply to throttle unit" and continues with a suggestion to check the battery and charging system. However, the battery's condition, with the vehicle in the workshop, does not show the battery voltage when the fault was detected. The best information is in the frozen values, i. e. the voltage that the Engine control module (ECM) detected, when the Electronic throttle module (ETM) indicated the fault.

However, remember that this is not an indication of the voltage supply to the Electronic throttle module (ETM), but to the Engine control module (ECM). If the Engine control module (ECM), according to the frozen values, had a good voltage, the battery worked. The voltage supply to the Electronic throttle module (ETM) should therefore be checked separately.

Frozen values for ECM-903F
Status, lambda control bank 1 = LR: Closed circuit with two sensors
Status, lambda control bank 2 = LR: Closed circuit with two sensors
Calculated load = 4.71 %
Engine coolant temperature = 87 °C
Fuel trim, quick adjustment, bank 1= 15.63%
Fuel trim, slow adjustment, bank 1 = -0.78%
Fuel trim, quick adjustment, bank 2 = 23.44%
Fuel trim, slow adjustment, bank 2 = -0.78%
Engine speed = 760 RPM
Vehicle speed = 0 km/h
Boost pressure = 30%
Battery voltage = 12.50 V
Throttle angle, desired value = 14.84%
Air mass = 23.8 kg/h Outdoor temperature = 33 °C

In this case, we assume that the vehicle had a low battery voltage in the workshop. As seen in the frozen values however, the battery voltage was correct when the fault occurred, and this was therefore probably not the cause. This is an example of how the frozen values can be used, to make fault-tracing more efficient and prevent taking too much time fault-tracing incorrectly. This prevents fault-tracing and correcting a fault that was not actually the cause of the problem, which was originally to be solved.

The odometer setting (km) is included among the frozen values in the Engine control module (ECM). This makes a fast comparison with the odometer counter possible, so that one can determine if the fault occurred as part of the fault-tracing and can be ignored.

For example, the CAN related diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be detected when the battery voltage drops when working on the vehicle, by the passenger compartment lighting and other loads draining the battery. The frozen values indicate the odometer setting in km. Multiplying this value by 0.62 gives the distance in miles. The current distance in miles and km can be read out using VIDA.

The following should be taken into account when using frozen values for fault-tracing. The frozen values, that should be used with care, are those that have been stored for CAN and are related to Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) for the Electronic throttle module (ETM).

If the Electronic throttle module (ETM) detects that the communication to the Engine control module (ECM) is interrupted, error flags are stored in the Electronic throttle module (ETM). These error flags are sent to the Engine control module (ECM) as soon as communication on the CAN is working again. This means that the Engine control module (ECM) stores the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as soon as the Electronic throttle module (ETM) supplies them.

This, in turn means that it is at this time that the frozen values are stored. For the Electronic throttle module (ETM) this means that the frozen values occur from a point in time after the fault first occurred.

Checking the throttle unit

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. Check if the diagnostic trouble code has been generated during engine start and if the battery voltage was very low at that time.

If the trouble code was stored when battery voltage was low and engine speed was close to 0 RPM when the fault occurred, it could indicate that the fault arose when the vehicle was stationary with the ignition on for a long period, thereby draining the battery, or that the fault arose due to battery voltage becoming low when the customer started the engine. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK.

Check the battery charge status, connections to the battery and chassis and the battery cables for contact resistance and oxidation.

Remedy as necessary. Otherwise, continue as follows.

If the frozen values indicate that battery voltage was OK, try a new throttle unit (ETM).

Remedy as necessary.

  2. NO Refer to «Information»(ref-430995-S24835794712011101900000)

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.

Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

See Faulty signal

Check whether the engine control module (ECM) has stored any diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the throttle position sensor of the throttle unit. If diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150 and/or ECM-9160 are stored, they are to be fault traced first.

Thoroughly check the throttle for contaminants and seizing. Also check that no objects are blocking the throttle. If there is clear indication that the throttle disc has or has had contact with dirt or deposits in the throttle body, clean the throttle unit.

HINT: Small objects can cause the throttle disc to temporarily stick, which can generate this diagnostic trouble code.

Note. If the throttle is coated with an oil film, the nipple between the intake manifold and oil trap may require cleaning. Always clean the nipple if the throttle is coated with oil film.

If the trouble code recurs despite the checks/measures specified above, try replacing the throttle unit (ETM).

CAUTIONIn order for Electronic throttle module (ETM) to reset any reconfigurations as well as delete internally stored problems, the following must be performed: Ignition off, wait three minutes so that the main relay / system relay releases the voltage feed to, among other, Electronic throttle module (ETM). Then turn on the ignition and turn it off again.

See Faulty signal

Explanation

Not all the parameters described need to be implemented in the control module. This varies from system to system.

For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. This is because the upgraded software allows a greater range for the throttle position sensor values while at the same time requiring that both throttle position sensors' values lie outside of this range for the diagnostic trouble code to be generated.

If the trouble code recurs despite the checks/measures specified above, try replacing the throttle unit (ETM).

For normally aspirated engines

If ECM-130A is stored together with ECM-91CF, ECM-130A must be fault-traced and remedied first. This is because ECM-91CF is incorrectly stored when ECM-130A, Permanent fault is stored, at the same time as cruise control is activated. This can be solved by fault-tracing and remedying ECM-130A. Otherwise, continue as follows.

For turbo engines

If ECM-91CF is stored but not ECM-130A, the solution for the markets where upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, can be to download the upgraded software. Modifications have been made in the upgraded software, that do not place great demands on the Electronic throttle module (ETM) and Engine control module (ECM) reacting at precisely the same time, several seconds can now pass until the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored. In other words, if cruise control is activated using the upgraded software, and then the brakes are applied, the Electronic throttle module (ETM) permits up to 2 seconds to pass before the Engine control module (ECM) signals that cruise control is no longer active. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored after 0.5 seconds in earlier software. Otherwise, continue as follows.

If there is another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the Engine control module (ECM) that indicates a brake fault, ECM-9400 and/or ECM-914F, this/these must be fault-traced first. Otherwise, continue as follows.

Check, using VIDA vehicle communication, that the Engine control module (ECM) receives the correct information about the status of the stop lamp switch and brake pedal position sensor. If the parameter for the brake light switch indicates the wrong status, check the signal cable between the brake light switch and the engine control module (ECM) for open circuit.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. If the counters show that the problem has occurred frequently in recent time, it is highly likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting. If the counters show that the problem is extremely intermittent, it is not very likely that the problem can be recreated during troubleshooting.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-91DF is stored of the Electronic throttle module (ETM) receives information from the stop lamp switch that indicates that the brake pedal has been depressed, but the Engine control module (ECM) transmits information that the brake pedal has been released. The information that the Engine control module (ECM) transmits, based on the signal from the stop lamp switch. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be stored alone, but it is more common that it has been stored due to no CAN communication with the Engine control module (ECM).

If one or several of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) ECM-901A, ECM-902A, ECM-902B, ECM-911A, ECM-912A, ECM-E000 and/or ECM-E003 are stored at the same time as ECM-91DF, continue fault-tracing according to one of these diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If there is another diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the Engine control module (ECM) that indicates a brake fault, ECM-9400 and/or ECM-914F, this/these must be fault-traced first. Checking the power supply and ground terminals

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is.

Driving conditions may be, e. g., if the engine was running, what speed the vehicle had/or if it was only Electronic throttle module (ETM) that experienced the low battery voltage.

Example of conclusions one can draw from information based on counters and frozen values

  1. The diagnostic trouble code indicates that Electronic throttle module (ETM) has detected that the battery voltage was low, but it is unclear how Engine control module (ECM) has detected the battery voltage. The battery voltage accounted for in the frozen values is the voltage feed to Engine control module (ECM) and not Electronic throttle module (ETM). If the voltage feed to Engine control module (ECM) is low, this indicates that one should look for a problem that may affect both Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM) or may affect other control modules in the vehicle. If the battery voltage is OK in the frozen values, this indicates that the problem cause is isolated to the parts of the voltage feed or grounding point that only affects Electronic throttle module (ETM). Check that the connector connections for Electronic throttle module (ETM) are OK and that there is voltage and ground connection for Electronic throttle module (ETM).
  2. If the counters shows that there has been a single occurrence of the problem before the last 25 driving cycles , or if the problem was generated when the engine speed was 0 RPM and battery voltage to Engine control module (ECM) was 8.9 V, then the vehicle may have stood with the ignition on for a longer time and the battery has been discharged. In this case, check that the battery and its charging status is OK.
  3. If the battery voltage has been low or high in both Engine control module (ECM) and Electronic throttle module (ETM), when the engine has been running, this may indicate damaged charging regulator or alternator. At too high battery voltage, it may be an external start aid with too high voltage that has been connected to the vehicle.

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software for the times when the customer has stood with the ignition on and drained the battery or if anyone has connected a starting aid, which have given too high voltage for a short time. Since the upgraded software requires that the engine is running and that the battery voltage is incorrect for more than 30 seconds, then it will prevent the diagnostic trouble code from being generated in these cases.

Remedy as necessary.

If this is the case, this may indicate a poorly charged battery, corroded connections or poor battery cables.

  1. Check that the connector connections for Electronic throttle module (ETM) are OK and that there is voltage and ground connection for Electronic throttle module (ETM). At ignition on, a beeping sound shall be heard from the throttle module for a short time, when it is supplied with voltage.
  2. Check that the battery voltage in the vehicle is normal and that the battery's charging status is OK. Also check that the battery cables and their connections to the vehicle are in good condition as well as that connections to the battery are installed correctly and not corroded.
  3. For markets where upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to download the upgraded software. Since detection time is increased from 0.13 to 10 seconds, the upgraded software is much more tolerant against brief intermittent interference.

Erase the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). If the problem still can be recreated, despite above actions, try with a new throttle module unit.

HINT: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

  1. Ignition on. Read off the diagnostic status and fault status for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) by selecting the relevant diagnostic trouble code (DTC) from the list. Check the fault status for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) when the diagnostic is "Complete". If the function is correct, the fault status must be "No fault found" when the diagnostic is complete.

Is the function OK?

  1. YES VERIFIED: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NO Refer to «Information»(ref-430995-S17679371522011101900000)

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.

Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Check if other control modules have diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for control area network (CAN) faults. If so, perform all troubleshooting according to these diagnostic trouble codes first. Otherwise, continue as follows.

ECM-928C is stored if the engine control module (ECM) does not receive steering wheel module (SWM) information on the cruise control buttons via the CAN network. The diagnostic trouble code is also generated if the information received by the engine control module (ECM) does not match that sent by the steering wheel module (SWM).

  1. Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameters "Cruise control resume", "Cruise control SET-" and "Cruise control SET+" indicate the correct values. If the buttons work and the information can be read out in the engine control module (ECM), the fault is intermittent. Otherwise the fault is permanent.

Permanent fault

Check whether the steering wheel module (SWM) has stored any diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the cruise control buttons. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first.

Check whether any other control modules have stored diagnostic trouble codes that indicate that the steering wheel module (SWM) was not transmitting on the CAN network. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first.

Intermittent fault

Check whether the steering wheel module (SWM) has stored any diagnostic trouble codes that indicate a fault in the cruise control buttons. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first.

Check whether any other control modules have stored diagnostic trouble codes that indicate that the steering wheel module (SWM) was not transmitting on the CAN network. Any diagnostic trouble codes that are stored should be fault traced first.

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. At start, battery voltage may be low if the battery has been poorly charged. Check the speed at which the vehicle was travelling when the trouble code was stored as cruise control can only be activated at speeds above 30 km/h (18.6 mph).

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software. If the frozen values indicate that the diagnostic trouble code was generated due to low battery voltage during or just after engine start, new software is the solution. This is because the new software requires vehicle speed to be greater than 25 km/h (15 mph) for the test to be active.

If upgraded software is not available and the frozen values indicate that the fault occurred when battery voltage was low and engine speed was close to 0 RPM, fault tracing should focus on checking the vehicle's power supply, especially battery charge status.

HINT: Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameters "Cruise control resume", "Cruise control SET-" and "Cruise control SET+" indicate the correct values. To aid fault tracing, use Component specifications when measuring and checking relevant components and use Wiring diagram, Signal description and Breakout box to measure and control signals to and front the control module or its components.

Remedy as necessary.

WARNINGIn order for Electronic throttle module (ETM) to reset any reconfigurations as well as delete internally stored problems, the following must be performed: Ignition off, wait three minutes so that the main relay / system relay releases the voltage feed to, among other, Electronic throttle module (ETM). Then turn on the ignition and turn it off again. Wait another three minutes, but if the electric cooling fan is running you have to wait another two minutes after the cooling fan has stopped, to ensure that Electronic throttle module (ETM) is shut off correctly. If this is not done correctly, diagnostic trouble codes may remain even after deletion of diagnostic trouble codes as well as any reconfiguration, despite the problem being fixed.

When the adaptation is completed correctly, the following information will be displayed: Adaptation of the throttle unit: OK Adaptation of the throttle unit running: NO. The fault has been remedied if the adaptation has been completed correctly.

Is the adaptation OK?

  1. YES VERIFIED: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NO Refer to «Information»(ref-430995-S21140628902011101900000)

Signal too high/signal too low Permanent fault

Check the cable between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B15 and clutch pedal position sensor terminal #2 for open circuit, short circuit to supply voltage or short circuit to ground depending on the type of fault detected. Check the ground cable between engine control module (ECM) terminal #B4 and clutch pedal position sensor terminal #4 for open circuit, short circuit to supply voltage or short circuit to ground depending on the type of fault detected. Check the resistance between clutch pedal position sensor terminals #2 and #4. Fault trace and remedy as necessary.

Signal too high/signal too low Intermittent fault

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. The operating conditions can be, for example, whether the engine was running, what the speed of the vehicle was and what the battery voltage in the system was. This information can facilitate searching for an intermittent fault. If the fault was stored at a battery voltage lower than 10 V with engine speed at 0 RPM, this indicates that the fault may have occurred when the engine was started. This, in turn, indicates that the battery's charging status is not OK.

  1. Check the battery status.

Faulty signal Permanent or intermittent.

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software. It is no longer necessary to store a diagnostic trouble code for this type of fault. Thus, this fault type has been disabled in the upgraded software. For other markets, check the clutch pedal position sensor's installation, cables and connectors for contact resistance and oxidation. Check that the clutch pedal position sensor has the right resistance.

HINT: Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameter "Clutch pedal position" indicates correct values. There are other parameters that can be of help when fault tracing and verifying this diagnostic trouble code. To aid fault tracing, use Component specifications when measuring and checking relevant components and use Wiring diagram, Signal description and Breakout box to measure and control signals to and front the control module or its components.

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software. Since detection time has been increased from 0.16 to 5 seconds, the upgraded software will be much more tolerant to short, intermittent disruptions.

Signal too high/signal too low Intermittent fault

Use the diagnostic trouble codes' frozen values as well as the counters, to determine the driving conditions when the problem was detected the first time and how often the problem has occurred. The values show the problem's current status and how intermittent the problem is. This information can facilitate searching for an intermittent fault.

If for example the trouble code was stored when battery voltage was low and engine speed was equal to 0 RPM, it could indicate that the fault arose when the vehicle was stationary with the ignition on for a long period, thereby draining the battery, or that the fault arose when the customer was attempting to start the vehicle.

For markets where the upgraded software, released during 2006 or later, is available, the solution may be to load the upgraded software. Since detection time has been increased from 0.16 to 2 seconds, the upgraded software will be more tolerant to short, intermittent disruptions.

HINT: Using VIDA vehicle communication, check that the parameters "Brake pedal position, volts" and "Brake light switch" indicate correct values. To aid fault tracing, use Component specifications when measuring and checking relevant components and use Wiring diagram, Signal description and Breakout box to measure and control signals to and front the control module or its components.

  3. Wait another three minutes, but if the electric cooling fan is running you have to wait another two minutes after the cooling fan has stopped, to ensure that Electronic throttle module (ETM) is shut off correctly.

If this is not done correctly, diagnostic trouble codes may remain even after deleting diagnostic trouble codes and any reconfiguration may remain, despite the problem being fixed.

Preparatory work

Ignition off.

Press the brake pedal a few times until the pedal becomes stiff and rises slightly. This releases the vacuum in the brake servo and thus prevents the O-ring from being sucked in when the pedal position sensor is removed.

Scheme 825

Scheme 825: Removal

Slacken off the snap ring around the mounting on the sensor slightly. Insert a narrow screwdriver or wedge. Press one end of the snap ring in approximately 10 mm. Press radially backwards in the groove in the snap ring.

Pull out the sensor slightly and disconnect the connector. Remove the sensor and the O-ring.

Faulty signal. Permanent fault

See Faulty signal. Permanent fault

Signal missing Permanent or intermittent fault.

Using VIDA vehicle communication, check the function of the brake light switch by reading off the parameters "Brake light switch" and "Brake pedal position". When the brake pedal is depressed, the parameter "Brake light switch" should indicate that the switch is activated when the parameter "Brake pedal position" is greater than 23.8% (1.2 V).

Diagnostic trouble code ECM-9400 will be stored in the engine control module (ECM) if the brake light switch has not closed when the brake pedal is depressed and brake pedal position is less than 23.8% (1.2 V) for longer than 0.16 seconds.

If the brake light switch and brake pedal position sensor appear to be working properly, but the brake light switch closes at the wrong time, check the attachment of the brake light switch and the brake pedal position sensor and check that the pedal assembly seems OK.

If the brake light switch does not close when the brake pedal is depressed, check the brake light switch's cables, connectors and voltage supply (battery voltage) to brake light switch terminal #1.

When the brake pedal is depressed (switch closed), brake light switch terminal #2 and engine control module (ECM) terminal #B26 should have battery voltage.

Remedy as necessary.

If diagnostic trouble code ECM-9400, No signal, Intermittent fault, is stored but no fault is found, the solution could be to download the upgraded software (only for markets where upgraded software (released 2006 or later) is available). Since detection time has been increased from 0.16 to 2 seconds and the fault must be repeated during 30 consecutive brakings, the upgraded software will be much more tolerant to short, intermittent disruptions.

Note. The upgraded software has adjusted limits for the fault type No signal. The diagnostic trouble code is stored if the brake light switch is not closed when the brake pedal is depressed, brake pedal position is less than 53.9% (2.7 V) for longer than 2 seconds and this is repeated for 30 consecutive brakings.

The diagnostic trouble code can also be stored if the brake light switch is closed when the brake pedal is released. For this test an adapted brake pedal position sensor value is used, that is, the control module adapts the signal so that it always shows 0 % (0 V) at released pedal, which is different from other tests where the direct signal from the sensor is used. This parameter is not accessible in VIDA. By checking what the parameter "Brake pedal position" indicates when the pedal is released and then subtracting the value from the value indicated when the brake light switch is closed, one can estimate the size of the adapted value.

For example, if "Brake pedal position, volts" is 3.10 V when the pedal is released and 2.91 V when the brake light switch closes, the adapted value is 0.19 V (3.10-2.91) when the brake light switch closes. The diagnostic trouble code will be stored if the brake light switch is closed when the adapted value is less than 2.7% (0.14 V) for longer than 2 seconds and this is repeated for 30 consecutive brakings.

  1. Ignition on
  2. Read off the status from the brake light switch. Check the function of the brake light switch by slowly pressing down and letting up the brake pedal. Check that the status changes between "OFF" when brake pedal is not pressed and "ON" when brake pedal is pressed. If the status from the brake light switch changes according to the above when pressing on the brake pedal, this indicates that the malfunction is intermittent at this time.

  1. Ignition on Check voltage feed to the brake light switch. Measure between the brake light switch #1 (against cable harness) and ground (frame grounding point). Voltage feed shall be approx. 12 V. If voltage feed is missing: Check the circuit for voltage feed to the brake light switch #1 (against cable harness) for open circuit, short-circuit to ground and damaged fuse for the circuit. Remedy as necessary. Other information: See «Checking wiring and terminals»(ref-430909-S26456997912011101900000) . For information about the fuses and relays, see the appropriate Wiring Diagram. 1. Continue Refer to «Checking components and wiring»(ref-430995-S09487665162011101900000)

HINT: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

  1. Ignition off
  2. Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc.
  3. Ignition on
  4. Read off the status from the stop lamp switch. Check the function of the stop lamp switch by carefully pressing and releasing the brake pedal. Check that the status changes between "OFF" when the brake pedal is unaffected and "ON" when the brake pedal is depressed. If the status of the stop lamp switch changes as described above when the brake pedal is depressed, the fault has been remedied.

Is the function OK?

  1. YES VERIFIED: Troubleshooting has been completed.
  2. NO Refer to «Information»(ref-430995-S42654124112011101900000)

The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
