- Test drive the car and ensure that there is a fuel shut-off. The easiest way to do this is to drive at approximately 80 km/h and abruptly release the accelerator pedal (AP) for at least 5 seconds
- Connect VCT2000 to the data link connector (DLC) without switching off the engine. NOTE: If the engine is switched off, the stored fault status will be erased and the test drive will have to be repeated. Read off the diagnostic status and the fault status for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC). Check that the diagnostic is "Completed" and that the fault status is "No fault detected". The function is faulty if the fault status is "Fault found".

CHECKING THE STATUS
Check whether the fault is permanent or intermittent by reading the signals from the fuel, outside and engine temperature sensors.
- Start the engine.
Check that the fuel temperature is within its permitted range. The fuel temperature should not be lower than the outdoor temperature and a maximum of 40 °C above the engine temperature.
The fault is permanent if the signal is incorrect. The fault is intermittent if the signal is correct.
HINT: Remove the fuel temperature sensor, but let the connector remain connected. The fuel temperature sensor is integrated in the fuel pressure sensor. The sensor should then show the same temperature as the outdoor temperature.

CHECKING FUSES
All heated oxygen sensors are supplied with voltage with the same lead. If the lead is damaged, e. g., fuse on the lead, then diagnostic code for heating for all heated oxygen sensors will be stored.
Therefore, check first if diagnostic trouble codes for heating are also stored for other heated oxygen sensors.
HINT: Brake vacuum pump is supplied with voltage via the same lead as the heated oxygen sensors. A damaged brake vacuum contact can lead to the pump running continuously and in the long-term be overheated and damaged. In turn, this leads to damaged fuse.
HINT: Therefore, check the brake vacuum switch and pump before any continued troubleshooting is done on the heated oxygen sensors.

REPLACING THE THERMOSTAT
Note. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor freezes. This may happen if the coolant level is low or there is too little glycol in the coolant. Check the engine coolant level and its freezing point. Remedy as necessary.
The engine control module (ECM) has registered that the actual temperature increase has deviated from the calculated temperature increase. This deviation is due to a damaged thermostat.

CHECKING THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, IGNITION SYSTEM AND COMPONENTS
Note. In the event of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), that affect camshaft control or camshaft reset valve, these must be fault-traced first.
HINT: In certain cases, the engine control module (ECM) can determine which cylinder has misfired.
Check the fuel level in the fuel tank.
Check that the engine oil level is correct.
Look for moisture in the electrical terminals for the ignition coils and in the spark plug wells.
Check the spark plugs. Search for damage in the insulation and other damage.
Check the engine intake system for leakage.
Check the crankcase ventilation. Check for blockage.
Check the fuel pressure and residual pressure.
Check the compression of the engine.
Remedy as necessary.

- Start the engine. Read off the diagnostic status and fault status for the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) by selecting the relevant diagnostic trouble code (DTC) from the list. Increase the engine speed to 2500 RPM until the diagnostic is "Complete". Check whether the fault is permanent or intermittent. Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) fault status when the diagnostic status is "Completed". HINT: In some cases several functions of the component will be diagnosed. This affects the amount of time taken to run the diagnostic. The fault is permanent if the fault status is "Fault found". If the fault status is "No fault found" the fault is intermittent and not presently active.

Check for moisture in the electrical terminals for the ignition coils and in the spark plug well.
Check the spark plugs. Search for damage in the insulation and other damage.
Check the engine intake system for air leakage.
Check the crankcase ventilation. Check for blockage.
Check the fuel pressure and residual pressure.
Check the compression of the engine.

CHECKING COMPONENTS AND CONNECTIONS
- The status of the valve can be determined by activating the quick test for the EVAP valve. The test sends pressure pulses through the valve so that the functionality of the valves can be checked. The fault is permanent if a fault is detected in the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve when running the quick test
- Engine idling during the entire test. Activate the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve quick test. The test takes a few seconds to carry out. The tool displays the ranking value as a value between 0 and 255. The functionality is poor if the value is 128 or higher. Check the hose/hose connectors between the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve and canister. Check for damage, blockage or pinching. The valve may need to be cleaned or replaced. The functionality is good if the value is below 128. If this is the case, check the hose/hose connectors between the EVAP valve and the intake manifold. Check for damage, blockage or pinching. Note the read ranking value. Remedy as necessary. Other information see «LOCATION OF COMPONENTS, ENGINE COMPARTMENT»(ref-500307-S24795875862012091100000)

HINT: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.
- Ignition off
- Reinstall the connectors, components etc.
- Restart the quick test of the EVAP valve and check the ranking values to establish if the work carried out has remedied the problem
- Engine idling during the entire test. Activate the evaporative emission system (EVAP) valve quick test. The test takes a few seconds to carry out. Check that the ranking value is lower than 128, and that it is significantly lower than the previous value. A value below 128 indicates that the fault has been remedied and the function is OK.
