INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

  1. If DTC P0010 is output, check the VVT system circuit.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

HINT

  1. DTC P0011 or P0012 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.
  2. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

Scheme 337

Scheme 337: DESCRIPTION
  1. The intake air temperature sensor, mounted on the mass air flow meter, monitors the intake air temperature sensor. The intake air temperature sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the intake air temperature sensor is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes ( see scheme 1above).
  2. The intake air temperature sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R.
  3. Resistor R and the intake air temperature sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the intake air temperature sensor changes, the voltage at terminal THA also varies accordingly. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability.
DTC No.DTC Detection ConditionTrouble Area
P0111Either condition below is met (2 trip detection logic): The intake air temperature change, from the previous trip warm-up to the following trip is small. The change in the intake air temperature after engine start is less than the threshold value.Mass air flow meter

  1. Check the "Fuel Cut Elps Time" value in the Data List or the freeze frame data which were present when the malfunction occurred. If the value is more than 0 seconds, a high engine speed (8000 RPM or more) has occurred in the past. Since the misfire may be caused by valve rocker arm detaching due to an extremely high engine speed, check that the valve rocker arms are properly attached. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-554438-S26635471572013052000000) .
  2. By clearing the DTC, "Fuel Cut Elps Time" will be cleared.
  3. If any DTCs other than the misfire DTCs are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
  5. If the misfire does not recur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, reproduce the conditions stored in the freeze frame data.
  6. If the misfire still cannot be reproduced even though the conditions stored in the freeze frame data have been duplicated, one of the following factors is considered to be a possible cause of the problem: The fuel tank is low. Improper fuel is used. The spark plugs have been contaminated. The problem is complex.
  7. After finishing repairs, check the misfire counts of the cylinders (Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to #4).
  8. Be sure to confirm that no misfiring cylinder DTCs are stored again by conducting the confirmation driving pattern, after repairs.
  9. In the event of DTC P0300 being present, perform the following operations: Clear DTC. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-554492-S07547393792013052000000) . Start the engine and conduct the confirmation driving pattern. Read the misfiring rates of each cylinder or DTC(s) using the Techstream or scan tool. Repair the cylinder(s) that has a high misfiring rate or is indicated by the DTC. After finishing repairs, conduct the confirmation driving pattern again, in order to verify that DTC P0300 is not stored.
  10. When one of Short FT #1 or Long FT #1 in the freeze frame data is outside the range of +/-15%, the air fuel ratio may be rich (-15% or less) or lean (+15% or more).
  11. When the Coolant Temp in the freeze frame data is less than 75°C (167°F), the misfires have occurred only while warming up the engine.
  12. An extremely imbalanced drive wheel which causes body vibration may cause misfire DTCs detection.

CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING

HINT

Perform the operation with the engine speeds and time durations described below prior to checking the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors. This is to activate the sensors sufficiently to obtain appropriate inspection results.

Scheme 353

Scheme 353: CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING
  1. (a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. (b) Start the engine and warm it up with all the accessories switched off until the engine coolant temperature stabilizes.
  3. (c) Run the engine at an engine speed of between 2500 RPM and 3000 RPM for at least 3 minutes.
  4. (d) While running the engine at 3000 RPM for 2 seconds, and then 2000 RPM for 2 seconds, check the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors using the Techstream.

HINT

  1. If the voltage output of either the air fuel ratio or heated oxygen sensor does not fluctuate, or there is a noise in the waveform of either sensor, the sensor may be malfunctioning.
  2. If the voltage outputs of both the sensors remain lean or rich, the air fuel ratio may be extremely lean or rich. In such cases, perform the Control the Injection Volume Active Test using the Techstream.
  3. If the Three-way Catalytic Converter (TWC) has deteriorated, the heated oxygen sensor (located behind the three-way catalytic converter voltage output fluctuates up and down frequently, even under normal driving conditions (active air fuel ratio control is not performed).
