ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Inspect the oil control valve (for intake camshaft). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the active test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when the engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. Standard Control Range Specified Condition OFF Normal engine speed ON Rough idle or engine stalls (soon after oil control valve switched from OFF to ON) Inspect the oil control valve (for exhaust camshaft). Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed when the oil control valve is operated using the Techstream with the engine coolant temperature at 50°C (122°F) or less. HINT: When performing the active test, the air conditioning should be on. Engine coolant temperature when the engine is started should be 30°C (86°F) or less. Standard Control Range Specified Condition -100% Normal engine speed 100% Rough idle or engine stalls (soon after oil control valve switched to 100%)

- REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Exhaust camshaft side: Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector. Remove the bolt and the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and separate the wire harness bracket. Remove the O-ring from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Intake camshaft side: Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector. Remove the bolt and remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Remove the O-ring from the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.

- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance between the terminals. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Check the operation Connect a positive (+) battery lead to terminal 1 and a negative (-) battery lead to terminal 2, and check the movement of the valve. NOTE: Confirm that the valve moves freely and does not stick in any position. If necessary, replace the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. HINT: Accumulation of foreign matter can cause minor pressure leaks. Minor pressure leaks will cause the camshaft to advance or retard, and this will cause a DTC to be set.

- INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Intake camshaft side: Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it onto the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly NOTE: Do not twist the O-ring. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and wire harness bracket with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector. Exhaust camshaft side: Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install it onto the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. NOTE: Do not twist the O-ring. Install the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and wire harness bracket with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector. Install the wire harness bracket with the bolt. Torque: 8.4 N*m (85 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf)

- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Check for throttle control motor operating sound. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When depressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If any friction noise exists, replace the throttle body assembly. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Throttle Pos. Sensor Output. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Position" is within the specification. Standard Throttle Valve Opening Percentage Tester Display Standard Value Throttle Position 60% or more NOTE: Fully depress the accelerator pedal. HINT: If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle body assembly.

- REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH HOSE Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector and the 2 wire harness clamps. Disconnect the ventilation hose and loosen the hose clamp. Release the 2 clamps and remove the air cleaner cap sub-assembly with hose.
- REMOVE THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle body connector and the 2 water by-pass hoses. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts, and remove the throttle body assembly. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body assembly.

- INSTALL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY Install a new gasket onto the intake manifold. Install the throttle body assembly with the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) Connect the 2 water by-pass hoses and the throttle body connector.
- INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH HOSE Install the air cleaner cap sub-assembly with hose with the 2 clamps. Tighten the hose clamp to the specified torque. Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf) Connect the ventilation hose. Connect the wire harness clamp and mass air flow meter connector.
- ADD ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 2»(ref-427482-S20059146522011101200000)
- INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK . Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-427483-S29281529002011101200000)
- INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD COVER . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 85»(ref-427476-S41994840882011101200000)
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION NOTE: Perform the following procedure after replacing the ECM, throttle body assembly or any throttle body components. The following procedure should also be performed if the throttle body is cleaned. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Wait at least 60 seconds and reconnect the terminal. Turn the ignition switch to ON without operating the accelerator pedal. NOTE: If the accelerator pedal is operated, perform the above steps again. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-427311-S31989667402011101200000) . Start the engine and check that the MIL is not illuminated and that the idle speed is within the specified range when the A/C is switched off after the engine is warmed up. Standard Condition Engine Idle Speed A/C switched off 600 to 700 RPM NOTE: Be sure to perform this step with all accessories off. Make sure that the shift lever is in N or P. Enter the following menus: Powertrain/ Engine and ECT/ Data List/ Throttle Pos. Sensor Output. Fully depress the accelerator pedal and check that the value is 60% or more. Perform a road test and confirm that there are no abnormalities.

- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

- REMOVE ECM Separate the wire harness clamp. Disconnect the 2 ECM connectors. Push the locks on the 2 levers, then raise the levers, and disconnect the 2 ECM connectors. NOTE: After disconnecting the connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not contact the connecting parts of the connectors. Remove the 3 bolts and the ECM. Remove the 4 screws and 2 ECM brackets.

- INSTALL ECM Install the 2 ECM brackets onto the ECM with the 4 screws. Torque: 8.8 N*m (90 kgf*cm, 78 in.*lbf) Install the ECM with the 3 bolts. Torque: 8.0 N*m (82 kgf*cm, 71 in.*lbf) Connect the 2 ECM connectors. Connect the 2 ECM connectors and lower the 2 levers. NOTE: When connecting the connectors, make sure that dirt, water or other foreign matter does not get caught between the connectors and other parts. Make sure that the 2 levers are securely locked. Install the wire harness clamp.

- CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION HINT: Initialization cannot be completed by only removing the battery. Perform the Reset Memory (AT initialization) when replacing the ECM. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-427315-S00195076952011101200000) . (for Automatic Transaxle) Perform the Registration (VIN registration) when replacing the ECM. Refer to «REGISTRATION»(ref-427311-S10056099922011101200000) .

- INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Accelerator Position No. 1, Accelerator Position No. 2. Read the values displayed on the Techstream. Accelerator Position No. 1 Standard Voltage Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 0.5 to 1.1 V Accelerator pedal is fully depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Accelerator Position No. 2 Standard Voltage Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 1.2 to 2.0 V Accelerator pedal is fully depressed 3.4 to 5.0 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal, wire harness and ECM.

- REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal position sensor connector. Remove the 2 bolts and accelerator pedal.
Note. Perform the mass air flow meter inspection in accordance with the following procedure. Only replace the mass air flow meter when there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire, or the MAF value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range.
- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Read the values using the Techstream (MAF). NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the mass air flow meter while it is installed into the air cleaner case (installed on the vehicle). During the test, make sure that an exhaust air duct is not drawing air from the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not run the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Standard Condition Tester Display Condition Standard Condition MAF Engine is not running 30 seconds after ignition switch is turned to ON Less than 0.26 g/sec HINT: If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter. If the result is within the specified range, inspect the mass air flow meter. Refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-427474-S05269394132011101200000) .

- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER Perform a visual check for any foreign matter on the platinum hot wire (heater) of the mass air flow meter shown in the illustration. OK No foreign matter is attached. If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
