  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S23178403412011101200000) .
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
  8. Read the DTCs [B].
  9. If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result. CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S06483383612011101200000) .
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  6. Wait 5 seconds [A].
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
  8. Read the DTCs [B].
  9. If a DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result. PROCEDURE

  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT SYSTEM (BANK 1 OR BANK 2)) Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. On the Techstream, enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank1) or Control the VVT System (Bank2). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. OK Techstream Operation Specified Condition OFF Normal engine speed ON Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON) OK --> See step 5 NG: Go to next step
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT) Remove the OCV for intake camshaft. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV. Standard resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and connect the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation. OK Valve moves quickly. Reinstall the OCV. NG --> REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT) OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (OCV - ECM) Disconnect the OCV for intake camshaft connector. Disconnect the ECM connector. Measure the resistance between the terminals. Scheme 212: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S23178403412011101200000) .
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the ignition and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or more [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle for 5 minutes or more [C].
  8. Idle the engine for 30 seconds or more [D].
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending.
  10. Read the pending DTCs [E].
  11. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  13. Input the DTC: P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022.
  14. Check the DTC judgment result.   19. Check the DTC judgment result again [H]. HINT: If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction. If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
  20. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S23178403412011101200000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.
  1. If the difference between the target and actual camshaft timings is greater than the specified value, the ECM operates the VVT actuator.
  2. Then, the ECM monitors the camshaft timing change for 5 seconds.

  20. If the test result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S06483383612011101200000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes. Read the DTCs. Result Result Proceed to DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output A DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any DTCs other than P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first. B --> See step 8 A: Go to next step

  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 OR P0022) Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S06483383612011101200000) . Start the engine. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes / Pending. Read the pending DTCs using the Techstream. OK No pending DTC output. HINT: DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 is output when foreign objects in engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will stay output even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem. NG --> See step 4 OK --> See step 11
  4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMPED TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft. Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position. Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align. Turn the crankshaft clockwise by 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again. OK The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position. Reinstall the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH. NG --> ADJUST VALVE TIMING OK: Go to next step
  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE CAMSHAFT) Remove the OCV for intake camshaft. Measure the resistance between the terminals of the OCV.   6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND OIL PIPE Remove the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe. Remove the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH. Check that the oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged. OK The oil control valve filter and oil pipe are not clogged. Reinstall the oil control valve filter RH or oil control valve filter LH. Reinstall the No. 1 oil pipe or No. 2 oil pipe. NG --> REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER OR OIL PIPE OK: Go to next step
  7. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY Replace the camshaft timing gear assembly (bank 1 or bank 2). Refer to «DISASSEMBLY»(ref-428873-S09779335952011101200000) . NEXT --> See step 9
  8. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-428881-S08160572302011101200000)
  9. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S06483383612011101200000) . Start the engine. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in the Confirmation Driving Pattern.   4. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE AND JUMP TEETH ON TIMING CHAIN) Remove the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing marks of the crankshaft. Align the notch of the crankshaft pulley to the "0" position. Check if the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and camshaft bearing cap align. Turn the crankshaft clockwise by 360° if the timing marks do not align. Check if they align once again. OK The timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the camshaft bearing cap align when the notch of the crankshaft pulley is in the "0" position. Reinstall the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH. NG --> ADJUST VALVE TIMING OK: Go to next step
  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve for exhaust camshaft. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Scheme 222: DESCRIPTION
  1. The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor, mounted on the Mass Air Flow (MAF) meter, monitors the IAT. The IAT sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the IAT drops, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature rises, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes.
  2. The IAT sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R.
  3. Resistor R and the IAT sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the IAT sensor changes, according to changes in the IAT, the voltage at terminal THA also varies. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability.

FAIL-SAFE

When any of these DTCs, as well as other DTCs relating to electronic throttle control system malfunctions are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle, to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected, and the ignition switch is then turned off.

  12. Read the pending DTCs [C].
  13. If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. HINT: If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure). Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-428881-S23178403412011101200000) .
  4. Turn the ignition switch off for 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp and Intake Air.
  7. Stop the engine and allow it to soak.
  8. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  9. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the Techstream on.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp and Intake Air.
  11. Check if "Coolant Temp" is 56°C (133°F) or less and "Intake Air" is between 0 and 35°C (32 and 95°F). [A]
  12. Set the heater to MAX HOT with fresh air mode selected and turn the A/C off.
