ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch on (IG). Start and warm up the engine. Turn the Techstream ON and select VVT from the Active Test menu. Check the engine speed when the OCV is operated by the Techstream. OK Condition Specified Condition VVT system is OFF (OCV is OFF) Normal engine speed VVT system is ON (OCV us ON) Rough idle or engine stalled

- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Connect the batteries positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2. Check the movement of the valve. OK: Condition Result Battery positive voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery positive voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration If operation is not as specified, replace the valve.

- INSPECTION THROTTLE BODY Inspect the throttle control motor for operating sound. Turn the ignition switch on (IG). When turning the accelerator pedal position sensor lever, check the running sound of the motor. The motor should be running smoothly without friction sounds. If operation is not as specified, check the throttle control motor, wiring and ECM. Refer to Step 1 . Inspect the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch on (IG). Check that the MIL does not light up. Turn the Techstream ON. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Throttle Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of Throttle Position is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60 % or more If operation is not as specified, check the throttle position sensor, wiring and ECM. Refer to step 1 .

- DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 1»(/toyota/avalon/xx30-2-2010-2012/remont/cooling-system-mechanical/#cooling-system-service-information)
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected. Refer to «INITIALIZATION»(ref-428782-S26161270802011101200000).
- REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY. Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 9»(ref-428891-S37278879552011101200000)
- REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP WITH AIR CLEANER HOSE. Refer to «REMOVAL - Step 10»(ref-428891-S37278879552011101200000)
- SEPARATE WATER BY-PASS HOSE Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses from the throttle w/ motor body assembly.
- REMOVE THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the throttle w/ motor body assembly connector. Remove the 4 bolts and throttle w/ motor body assembly from the intake air surge tank. Remove the throttle body gasket from the intake air surge tank.
- CHECK MASS AIR FLOW METER NOTE: Perform the MAF meter inspection according to the procedures below. Only replace the MAF meter when the MAF value in the DATA LIST (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the MAF meter platinum hot wire (heater). Read value using Techstream (MAF). NOTE: Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface. Perform the inspection of the MAF meter while it is installed to the air cleaner case (installed to the vehicle). During the test, do not use the exhaust air duct to perform suction on the exhaust pipe. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch on (IG) (do not run the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the Techstream. Standard condition Tester Display Condition Standard Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after ignition switch is turned ON Below 0.33 g/sec. If the result is not as specified, replace the MAF meter. If the result is within the specified range, inspect the cause of the extremely rich or lean air fuel ratio. Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION»(ref-428893-S31782812592011101200000).
