TRANSMISSION

Transmission can be identified by identification tag located on the transmission case. (Scheme 10)

Oil Cooler Hoses

For all models, manufacturer recommends replacing transmission oil cooler hoses at 45,000 mile intervals.

Normal Temperature

Note. Do not race engine while checking fluid level, even after the engine start. Do not overfill. Overfill of fluid can cause foaming and loss of fluid through breather. Slippage and transmission failure can result. Bringing the level from LOW HOT to FULL HOT requires .64 pts. (.3 L). If vehicle was driven under high load such as pulling a trailer, fluid level should be checked about half an hour after it is stopped.

  1. Stop the vehicle and place it on level surface.
  2. Apply parking brake and place chocks against wheels.
  3. With selector at Park position, start engine.
  4. Warm up engine until fluid temperature reaches normal operating temperature (158-176° F/70-80° C ). As a guide to check fluid temperature, warm up engine until engine coolant temperature meter indicates around 1 unit above "C" point.
  5. Keep engine idling and shift selector lever slowly to "L" position and back to "P" position. (Scheme 11)
  6. With engine idling, pull out dipstick "1" (SHOC, DOHC engine) or dipstick "2" (V6 engine), wipe it off with a clean cloth and put it back into place.
  7. Pull out dipstick "1" (SHOC, DOHC engine) or dipstick "2" (V6 engine) again and check fluid level indicated on it. Fluid level should be between FULL HOT and LOW HOT. If it is below LOW HOT, add recommended fluid up to FULL HOT. See «RECOMMENDED FLUID»(ref-151958-S04563395892003010900000). (Scheme 12)for Grand Vitara and Vitara or (Scheme 13)for XL-7.

Cold Temperature

The fluid level check at room temperature performed after repair or fluid change before test driving is just preparation for level check of normal operating temperature. The checking procedure itself is the same as that described in Normal Temperature. If the fluid level is between FULL COLD and LOW COLD, proceed to test drive. When the fluid temperature has reached the normal operating temperature, check fluid level again and adjust it as necessary. (Scheme 12)for Grand Vitara and Vitara or (Scheme 13)for X-7.

ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Note. Various components may be serviced without transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article.

A/T THROTTLE CABLE

  1. Pull inner cable "3" with force of.45 lb (.2 kg) or less to be no slack of inner cable with Automatic Transmission (A/T) throttle cable "1" curved as shown. (Scheme 14)
  2. Fix stopper "2" to inner cable "3" with clearance "c".

SOHC, DOHC

  1. Check clearance "c" of A/T throttle cable "1". If it is out of specifications, adjust it by turning cable adjusting nut "2". A/T throttle cable adjusting position (clearance "c") should be.06" (1.5 mm). (Scheme 15)
  2. Tighten lock nut "3" securely.

V6

  1. Warm up engine and transmission to normal operating temperature.
  2. Ensure that accelerated cable is adjusted as specified.
  3. With throttle valve closed, check clearance "c", which should be within the following specification of A/T Throttle cable "1". If its out of specification, adjust it by turning cable adjusting nut "2". A/T throttle cable adjusting position (clearance "c").03-.06" (.8-1.5 mm). (Scheme 16)
  4. Tighten lock nut "3" securely.

SELECT CABLE

  1. Before tightening cable end nut "4", shift select lever to Neutral position.
  2. Shift manual shift lever "2" to Neutral. (Scheme 17) NOTE: Ensure that nut "4" and cable joint "3" have clearance under above conditions. If select cable "1" has been moved, push it in arrow "C" direction as shown in figure at the left until it stops and then confirm that select lever is in "N" position.
  3. Turn nut "3" by hand till it contacts manual selector cable joint "2". Then tighten nut "4" with wrench. (Scheme 17)
  4. After select cable "1" is installed, check for the following: Push vehicle with selector lever shifted to Park. Vehicle should not move. Vehicle can not be driven in Neutral. Vehicle can be driven in Drive, 2, and Low. Vehicle can be backed in Reverse.

TRANSMISSION RANGE SWITCH

  1. Shift select lever to Neutral range. (Scheme 18)
  2. Check that the center line on manual value shaft "2" and Neutral reference line "1" on switch are aligned. If not loosen switch bolt and align them.
  3. Check that engine starts in Neutral and Park ranges but it doesn't start in Drive, "2", Low or Reverse range. Also check that back-up lights in Reverse range.
