Note. To prevent abnormal cooling operation, ensure vehicle has not been placed close to a wall or another vehicle with engine idling. The OBD system may detect this as a malfunction.
Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE . If any other DTCs exist, repair those first. If DTC P0483 is only DTC set, check cooling system operation and repair as necessary. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES and VERIFICATION PROCEDURE .

- Perform basic diagnostic procedure. See «BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE»(ref-11745-S33755862182000112700000). If DTC P0720 exists, diagnose and repair that DTC. If only DTC P0500 exists, go to next step.
- Check speedometer operation. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If speedometer operation is abnormal, check power supply and ground circuit to instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Check wiring and connections between instrument cluster and vehicle speed sensor (VSS). Repair or replace parts as necessary. If speedometer operation is normal, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect 18-pin (30-pin on Legacy and Outback 2.5L) instrument cluster connector. Using an ohmmeter, backprobe between ECM connector B135 (28-pin connector) terminal No. 24 and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 13 (No. 10 on Impreza and Outback Sport; No. 7 on Forester). see scheme 7, see scheme 22 and (Scheme 35). If resistance is less than 10 ohms, repair poor terminal contact in ECM connector. If resistance is not less than 10 ohms, locate and repair open circuit in wiring and check for poor terminal contact in connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. Clear memory and perform verification procedure. See «CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES»(ref-11745-S21987207372000112700000) and «VERIFICATION PROCEDURE»(ref-11745-S19795024722001010900000).
