  1. ADJUST FLUID LEVEL AT HIGH TEMPERATURE WARNING: Use caution while the engine is idling and the radiator fan is operating. Be careful not to burn yourself when the fluid temperature is high. Warm up and stop the engine.[#4] Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 with the ignition switch off. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. NOTE: To reduce load, make sure that all electrical systems, such as the air conditioning, lighting system, electric fan and audio system, are off. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Data List. Select the Data List menu: A/T Oil Temperature 1 Select the Data List menu: Engine Speed Check the ATF temperature. NOTE: If the fluid temperature tends to decrease when the fluid temperature is between 85°C (185°F) and 90°C (194°F) with the engine idling, make sure that fluid temperature is above 90°C (194°F) before starting work. If the fluid temperature tends to increase when the fluid temperature is between 85°C (185°F) and 90°C (194°F) with the engine idling, make sure that fluid temperature is below 85°C (185°F) before starting work. If the fluid temperature tends to not change when the fluid temperature is between 85°C (185°F) and 90°C (194°F) with the engine idling, make sure that fluid temperature is 87.5°C (189.5°F) before starting work. Depress and hold the brake pedal. Start the engine. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P. Lift the vehicle. NOTE: Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure the tilt angle from the front to rear and side to side of the vehicle is within +/- 1°). Remove the 5 clips and rear engine under cover LH. Loosen the refill plug. Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket.[#1] WARNING: Be careful as the fluid coming out of the overflow plug hole is hot. NOTE: Before removing the overflow plug, make sure that the fluid temperature is between 85 and 90°C and the engine idle speed is within the range specified in the tables provided in step #3. When adding fluid (step #3), add the specified amount in accordance with the engine idle speed. If fluid does not come out, install the overflow plug, add fluid to the refill hole until fluid comes out, and perform the procedure from step #4 again. Make sure that the fluid temperature and engine speed remain within the appropriate range until the overflow plug is tightened in step #2. HINT: If the fluid temperature is increasing, the fluid flow will not completely stop because the fluid expands as its temperature increases. Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, install the overflow plug with a new gasket.[#2] Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) Lower the vehicle. Turn the ignition switch off. Remove the refill plug and gasket. Install a hose and funnel to the refill hole as shown in the illustration. NOTE: When the fluid level is correct and the fluid temperature is approximately 40°C, the transaxle is designed so that the fluid level is at the same height as the end of the overflow tube. When adjusting the fluid level with a fluid temperature of 85 to 90°C, drain the amount of fluid that has expanded due to heat (step #1). After the fluid has been drained, make sure to add the amount of fluid specified in the tables below. Pay extra attention when adding fluid because adding an excessive or insufficient amount of fluid may cause a malfunction in the automatic transmission. Do not insert the hose into the refill hole excessively. Be sure to use tape or equivalent to prevent the hose from sagging. HINT: Make sure to use a hose with a length of 1250 mm (4.1 ft.) and an outer diameter of 16 mm (0.63 in.). Add the specified amount of fluid to the refill hole.[#3] If determining the specific amount of fluid to be added, refer to the table below either for Automatic Transaxle. SPECIFIED AMOUNT TO BE ADDED Specified Amount to be Added at Fluid Temperature of 85°C (185°F) to90°C (194°F) ((g (oz.)) Engine Idle Speed (rpm)600 to 700 600 g (21.2 oz.) (700 cc (42.7 cu in.)) Engine Idle Speed (rpm)700 to 800 540 g (19.0 oz.) (640 cc (39.1 cu in.)) NOTE: If fluid remains inside the hose, the amount of fluid will be outside the specifications. Therefore, when adding fluid, make sure that no fluid remains inside the hose. The acceptable margin of error when adding fluid is +/- 20 g (0.7 oz.) or +/- 25 cc (1.5 cu in.). The values provided in the brackets in the table are for reference when the temperature of the fluid to be added is between 10°C (50°F) and 30°C (86°F). Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS. If fluid comes out (the amount of fluid is not as specified), perform the procedure from step #4 again. If determining the specified amount of fluid to be added by volume, calculate it based on weight and density at each temperature. Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf) Remove the Techstream from the DLC3.
  2. REBUILD WORK Lift the vehicle. Clean each part. Check for fluid leaks. Install the rear engine under cover LH with the 5 clips. Lower the vehicle.

  1. PRECAUTIONS AND WORK DESCRIPTION The U760E automatic transaxle does not have an oil filler tube or oil level gauge. When adding fluid, add fluid through the refill hole in the transaxle case. The fluid level can be adjusted by draining excess fluid (allowing excess fluid to overflow) through the overflow tube of the oil pan. HINT: "Overflow" indicates the condition under which fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole. Before adjusting the fluid level, add the specified amount of fluid when the engine is cold and warm up the engine to circulate the fluid in the transaxle. Make sure that the fluid temperature is as specified and that the engine is idling. The U760E automatic transaxle requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS. The adjustment should be performed according to the following procedures and notes.
  2. WORK FLOW The adjustment should be performed according to the procedures referenced in the work flow below.
  3. BEFORE FILLING TRANSAXLE WITH FLUID Lift the vehicle. NOTE: Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up. Remove the rear engine under cover LH.
  4. PERFORM INITIAL FILLING NOTE: If the transaxle is hot (ATF temperature is high), wait until the fluid temperature becomes the same as the ambient temperature before starting the following procedure (recommended ATF temperature: approximately 20°C [68°F]). Remove the refill plug and gasket from the automatic transaxle. NOTE: After performing any of the following operations, it is not necessary to perform the initial filling procedure. Proceed to the "Add Specified Amount of Fluid" procedure. Operation that does not Require Initial Filling Disconnection of the oil cooler tube or oil cooler hose Repair of fluid leakage due to a loose case plug, or a faulty plug gasket or O-ring Replacement of a new transaxle with torque converter (fluid-filled parts) Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket from the automatic transaxle. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 No. 1 Transmission Oil Filler Tube *2 Overflow Plug *3 Hexagon Socket Wrench NOTE: If ATF comes out after removing the overflow plug, wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out. If ATF comes out, it is not necessary to perform the initial filling procedure. After checking the tightening torque of the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube, temporarily install the overflow plug. Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, check that the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is tightened to the specified torque. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 No. 1 Transmission Oil Filler Tube *2 Overflow Plug Hole *3 Hexagon Socket Wrench Torque: 0.8 N*m (8 kgf*cm, 7 in.*lbf) NOTE: If the transmission No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is not tightened to the specified torque, the amount of fluid cannot be precisely adjusted. HINT: To check the torque of the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube, insert the hexagon socket wrench into the overflow plug hole. Perform initial filling. Fill the transaxle through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow plug hole. NOTE: Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS. Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out. Temporarily install the overflow plug. HINT: Reuse the old gasket. The plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.
  5. ADD SPECIFIED AMOUNT OF FLUID Fill the transaxle with the correct amount of fluid as listed in the table below. NOTE: The refill amount differs depending on the operation that was performed. Standard Capacity Operation Performed Fill Amount Disconnection of the oil cooler tube or oil cooler hose Repair of fluid leakage due to a loose case plug, or a faulty plug gasket or O-ring Replacement of a new transaxle with torque converter (fluid-filled parts) 0.5 liters (0.5 US qts, 0.4 Imp. qts) Removal and installation of drive shaft Removal and installation of transaxle case oil seal Removal and installation of oil pan 2.7 liters (2.9 US qts, 2.4 Imp. qts) Removal and installation of valve body 3.2 liters (3.4 US qts, 2.8 Imp. qts) Removal and installation of transaxle (remove torque converter) 3.4 liters (3.6 US qts, 3.0 Imp. qts) Replacement of transaxle (new torque converter) 5.1 liters (5.4 US qts, 4.5 Imp. qts) Replacement of transaxle (reused torque converter) 3.5 liters (3.7 US qts, 3.1 Imp. qts) Temporarily install the refill plug to avoid fluid spillage. HINT: Reuse the old gasket. The plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level. Lower the vehicle.
  6. ADJUST FLUID TEMPERATURE When using the Techstream: HINT: The actual ATF temperature can be checked on the Data List using the Techstream. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 with the ignition switch off. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. NOTE: Check that electrical systems, such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system, are off. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1. Enter the following menus: A/T Oil Temperature 1. Check A/T Oil Temperature 1. NOTE: If the fluid temperature is below 35°C (95°F), proceed to the next step (recommended ATF temperature: 30°C [86°F] or less). If the fluid temperature is 45°C (113°F) or higher, turn the ignition switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops below 35°C (95°F). Enter the following menus: Connect the TC and TE1 / ON. HINT: The indicator lights in the meter will not blink to indicate output DTCs when "Connect the TC and TE1 / ON" is performed. Depress and hold the brake pedal. Start the engine. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P. HINT: Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transaxle. While observing the D shift indicator in the combination meter, move the shift lever back and forth between N and D every 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more. NOTE: Do not pause for more than 1.5 seconds. HINT: Performing this operation will cause the vehicle to enter fluid temperature detection mode. Check that the D shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds. HINT: When fluid temperature detection mode is activated, the D shift indicator in the combination meter comes on for 2 seconds. If the D shift indicator does not come on for 2 seconds, return to the step where the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1" is first turned on and perform the procedure again. Move the shift lever from N to P. Release the brake pedal. Enter the following menus: TC and TE1 / OFF. NOTE: Make sure that the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1" is not turned on. If the Active Test is on, the fluid level cannot be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in idle speed. HINT: Turning off the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1" activates engine idle speed control mode. In engine idle speed control mode, engine idle speed control starts when the fluid temperature becomes 35°C (95°F) or higher and the engine speed is maintained at approximately 800 rpm. Even after the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1" is turned off, fluid temperature detection mode is active until the ignition switch is turned off. Warm up the engine with the engine idling until the fluid temperature reaches the normal operating temperature (35 to 45°C [95 to 113°F]). Below Normal Operating Temperature Normal Operating Temperature Above Normal Operating Temperature 35°C or less (95°F or less) 35 to 45°C (95 to 113°F) 45°C or higher (113°F or higher) NOTE: If the fluid temperature is within the normal operating temperature range, immediately proceed to the "Adjust Fluid Level" procedure. If the fluid temperature is 45°C (113°F) or higher, stop the engine and wait until the fluid temperature drops to 35°C (95°F) or less. Then perform the "Adjust Fluid Temperature" procedure again from the beginning. HINT: In fluid temperature detection mode, the D shift indicator comes on, goes off, or blinks depending on the fluid temperature. NOTE: Check that electrical systems, such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system, are off. HINT: The indicator lights in the meter blink to indicate output DTCs when terminals TC and CG are connected. Slowly move the shift lever from P to D, and then back to P. HINT: Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transaxle. While observing the D shift indicator in the combination meter, move the shift lever back and forth between N and D every 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more. NOTE: Do not pause for more than 1.5 seconds. HINT: Performing this operation will cause the vehicle to enter fluid temperature detection mode. Check that the D shift indicator comes on for 2 seconds. HINT: When fluid temperature detection mode is activated, the D shift indicator in the combination meter comes on for 2 seconds. If the D shift indicator does not come on for 2 seconds, return to the step where terminal TC is first connected and perform the procedure again. Move the shift lever from N to P. Release the brake pedal. Remove SST from terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG). SST: 09843-18040 NOTE: Make sure that terminals TC and CG are not connected. If the terminals are connected, the fluid level cannot be precisely adjusted due to fluctuations in engine speed. HINT: When terminals TC and CG are disconnected, engine idle control mode is activated. In engine idle speed control mode, engine idle speed control starts when the fluid temperature becomes 35°C (95°F) or higher and the engine speed is maintained at approximately 800 rpm. Even after terminals TC and CG are disconnected, fluid temperature detection mode is active until the ignition switch is turned off. Allow the engine to idle until the D shift indicator comes on again. D SHIFT INDICATOR Below Normal Operating Temperature (35°C or less) (95°F or less) Normal Operating Temperature (35 to 45°C) (95 to 113°F) Above Normal Operating Temperature (45°C or higher) (113°F or higher) Off On Blinks NOTE: If the D shift indicator is on, immediately proceed to the "Adjust Fluid Level" procedure. If the D shift indicator blinks, stop the engine and wait until the fluid temperature drops to 35°C (95°F) or less (the indicator goes off). Then perform the "Adjust Fluid Temperature" procedure again from the beginning. HINT: In fluid temperature detection mode, the D shift indicator comes on, goes off, or blinks depending on the fluid temperature. The fluid filling procedure should be performed when the D shift indicator is on (the fluid temperature is within the normal operating temperature range).
  7. ADJUST FLUID LEVEL WARNING: Use caution as the engine is running and the radiator fan is operating during the following procedure. Lift the vehicle. Adjust the fluid level. Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and gasket. WARNING: Be careful as the fluid coming out of the overflow hole is hot. Check the amount of fluid that comes out of the overflow plug hole. NOTE: If only a small amount of fluid (approximately 1 cc) comes out of the overflow hole, then only fluid remaining in the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube has come out. This condition is not considered to be overflow, so it is necessary to add fluid. If the amount of fluid that comes out of the overflow plug hole is large, wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out. If no fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole, remove the refill plug and gasket. Then add transaxle fluid through the refill hole until fluid comes out of the overflow plug hole. Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out. NOTE: Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS. Check that the fluid flow has slowed and only drops come out. HINT: The fluid flow will not completely stop because the fluid expands as its temperature increases. Install a new gasket and the overflow plug. Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) Install a new gasket and the refill plug. Torque: 49 N*m (500 kgf*cm, 36 ft.*lbf) Lower the vehicle. Turn the ignition switch off. HINT: Turning the ignition switch off exits fluid temperature detection mode. Disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3 (when using the Techstream).
  8. AFTER FILLING TRANSAXLE Lift the vehicle. Clean each part. Check for fluid leaks. Install the rear engine under cover LH. Lower the vehicle.

  2. REMOVE SPEED SENSOR Disconnect the connector of the speed sensor. Remove the 2 bolts and speed sensor from the transmission valve body assembly.

  1. INSTALL SPEED SENSOR Temporarily install the speed sensor to the transmission valve body assembly with the 2 bolts. NOTE: Do not use a speed sensor that has been dropped. Tighten the 2 bolts in the order shown in the illustration. Torque: 11 N*m (110 kgf*cm, 8 ft.*lbf) Connect the connector of the speed sensor.

  1. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Shift Solenoid Valve SL) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition Solenoid Connector - Solenoid Body 20°C (68°F) 11 to 15 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace shift solenoid valve SL. Connect the positive (+) lead of the battery to the terminal of the solenoid valve connector and the negative (-) lead to the solenoid body. Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating sound. NOTE: When using battery voltage during the inspection, do not bring the positive (+) and negative (-) tester probes too close to each other as a short circuit may occur. OK Valve moves and makes an operating sound. If the result is not as specified, replace shift solenoid valve SL.
  2. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SLT Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Shift Solenoid Valve SLT) Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 5.0 to 5.6 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the shift solenoid valve SLT. Connect the positive (+) lead of the battery with a 21 W bulb to terminal 2 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 1 of the solenoid valve connector. Then check that the valve moves and makes an operating sound. NOTE: When using battery voltage during the inspection, do not bring the positive (+) and negative (-) tester probes too close to each other as a short circuit may occur. OK Valve moves and makes an operating sound. If the result is not as specified, replace shift solenoid valve SLT.
  3. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SLU HINT: Refer to Inspect Shift Solenoid Valve SLT.
  4. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL1 HINT: Refer to Inspect Shift Solenoid Valve SLT.
  5. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL2 HINT: Refer to Inspect Shift Solenoid Valve SLT.
  6. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL3 HINT: Refer to Inspect Shift Solenoid Valve SLT.
  7. INSPECT SHIFT SOLENOID VALVE SL4 HINT: Refer to Inspect Shift Solenoid Valve SLT.
