ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT System (Bank 1). Check the engine speed while operating the Oil Control Valve (OCV) using the Techstream. Standard Condition Tester Operation Specified Condition OCV is OFF Normal engine speed OCV is ON Soon after OCV switched from OFF to ON, engine idles roughly or stalls If the operation is not as specified, check the oil control valve, wire harness and ECM.

  1. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.
  2. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Disconnect the oil control valve connector. Remove the bolt and oil control valve. Remove the O-ring from the oil control valve.

Scheme 43: INSPECTION
  1. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 6.9 to 7.9 ohms If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. Connect the battery positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2 and check the movement of the valve. OK Condition Specified Condition Battery positive (+) voltage is applied Valve moves in left arrow direction shown in illustration Battery positive (+) voltage is cut off Valve moves in right arrow direction shown in illustration TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve) If the result is not as specified, replace the oil control valve assembly. If the valve cannot return properly because of foreign matter, a small pressure leak in the advanced direction may occur and a DTC may be stored.

  1. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Exhaust Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install the O-ring to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 New O-Ring NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (the surface that contacts the cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
  2. INSTALL CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (for Intake Side) Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new O-ring and install the O-ring to the oil control valve. Install the oil control valve with the bolt. Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 New O-Ring NOTE: Do not allow foreign matter to contact the oil seal face of the oil control valve (the surface that contacts the cylinder head cover). Be careful that the O-ring is not cracked or moved out of place when installing the oil control valve. Connect the oil control valve connector.
  3. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 6»(ref-451163-S19675037162012020700000)

  1. CHECK THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Check the throttle control motor operating sounds. Turn the ignition switch to ON. When pressing the accelerator pedal, check the operating sound of the running motor. Make sure that no friction noises are emitted from the motor. If friction noise exists, replace the throttle with motor body assembly. Check the throttle position sensor. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Throttle Sensor Position. Depress the accelerator pedal. When the throttle valve is fully opened, check that the value of "Throttle Sensor Position" is within the specification. Standard throttle valve opening percentage 60% or more NOTE: When checking the standard throttle valve opening percentage, make sure the shift lever is in N. If the percentage is less than 60%, replace the throttle with motor body assembly.

  1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER Remove the 6 bolts, 7 clips and engine under cover.
  2. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT . Refer to «REPLACEMENT - Step 3»(ref-451165-S40553739182012020700000)
  3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY Refer to step 2
  4. REMOVE THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Disconnect the No. 1 water by-pass hose from the throttle body. Disconnect the No. 2 water by-pass hose from the throttle body. NOTE: If the fuel hose is detached from the clamp shown in the illustration, the clamp cannot be reused. Remove the bolt and disconnect the fuel hose bracket. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Clamp Disconnect the throttle position sensor and control motor connector. Remove the 4 bolts and throttle with motor body assembly. Remove the gasket from the intake manifold.

  1. INSPECT THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Check that the throttle valve opens and closes smoothly. Check that the there is no sludge accumulating around the throttle body. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (M-) - 2 (M+) 20°C (68°F) 0.3 to 100 ohms TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Throttle Body) If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle with motor body assembly.
  1. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / ETCS / Accel Sensor Out No. 1 and Accel Sensor Out No. 2. Read the value displayed on the Techstream. Standard Voltage Accel Sensor Out No. 1 Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 0.5 to 1.1 V Accelerator pedal is depressed 2.6 to 4.5 V Standard Voltage Accel Sensor Out No. 2 Condition Specified Condition Accelerator pedal is released 1.2 to 2.0 V Accelerator pedal is depressed 3.4 to 4.98 V If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal sensor assembly, wire harness and ECM.

  1. REMOVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SENSOR ASSEMBLY Disconnect the accelerator pedal sensor connector. Remove the 2 bolts and accelerator pedal sensor.

Note. Perform the mass air flow meter inspection according to the procedures below. Only replace the mass air flow meter when the mass air flow value in the Data List (with the engine stopped) is not within the normal operating range or there is foreign matter on the mass air flow meter platinum hot wire (heater).

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (do not run the engine). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / MAF. Wait 30 seconds, and then read the values on the Techstream. Standard Item Condition Specified Condition MAF Engine not running 30 seconds after turning ignition switch to ON Less than 0.48 g/sec. If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. If the result is as specified, inspect the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. Refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-451166-S14765107302012020700000) .

  1. REMOVE MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Remove the 2 screws and mass air flow meter.

  1. INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Perform a visual check for any foreign matter on the platinum hot wire (heater) of the mass air flow meter as shown in the illustration. OK There is no foreign matter. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Platinum Hot Wire (Heater) Check the intake air temperature sensor (built into the mass air flow meter). Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 (THA) - 2 (E2) -20°C (-4°F) 13.6 to 18.4 kohms 20°C (68°F) 2.21 to 2.69 kohms 60°C (140°F) 0.49 to 0.67 kohms TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Component without harness connected (Mass Air Flow Meter) If the result is not as specified, replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly.

INSPECTION

  1. INSPECT CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 Cold 1630 to 2740 ohms Hot 2065 to 3225 ohms HINT: In the table above, the terms "Cold" and "Hot" refer to the temperature of the coils. "Cold" means approximately -10 to 50°C (14 to 122°F). "Hot" means approximately 50 to 100°C (122 to 212°F). If the result is not as specified, replace the crankshaft position sensor.
  1. INSPECT KNOCK SENSOR Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. Standard Resistance Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition 1 - 2 20°C (68°F) 120 to 280 kohms If the result is not as specified, replace the knock sensor.

  1. INSTALL KNOCK SENSOR Install the sensor with the bolt so that the sensor is angled as shown in the illustration. Torque: 20 N*m (204 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *a Top *b Front of Engine NOTE: The acceptable installation angle of the sensor is between 7° upward and 10° downward from the horizontal position. Connect the sensor connector.

  1. INSTALL AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR (for Bank 1 Sensor 1) Using SST, install the sensor to the exhaust manifold. SST: 09224-00010 without SST Torque: 44 N*m (449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf) with SST Torque: 40 N*m (408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf) TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Fulcrum Length HINT: Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 cm (11.8 in.). When using a torque wrench with a fulcrum length that is not 30 cm (11.8 in.), calculate the torque specification for the torque wrench and SST based on the "without SST" torque specification. Refer to «PRECAUTION»(ref-451050-S16821205262012020700000) . Make sure SST and the wrench are connected in a straight line. Connect the sensor connector.
  2. INSTALL RADIATOR HOSE CLAMP . Refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 12»(ref-451165-S14066592722012020700000)
