Scheme 152: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or higher with all the accessories switched off [B].
  7. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C]. HINT: In order to keep the idling stable, turn off the A/C and all other electric loads and do not perform any shift operations.
  8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [D].
  9. Read the pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  11. Input the DTC: P0505.
  12. Check the DTC judgment result. Techstream Display Description NORMAL DTC judgment completed System normal ABNORMAL DTC judgment completed System abnormal INCOMPLETE DTC judgment not completed Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions UNKNOWN Unable to perform DTC judgment Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit HINT: If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction. If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform steps [E] and [F].
  13. Accelerate the vehicle to 10 km/h (6.25 mph) or more, and then idle the engine for 20 seconds or more [E].
  14. Repeat step [E] 5 times.
  15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [F].
  16. Read the pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  17. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  18. Input the DTC: P0505.
  19. Check the DTC judgment result. Techstream Display Description NORMAL DTC judgment completed System normal ABNORMAL DTC judgment completed System abnormal INCOMPLETE DTC judgment not completed Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions UNKNOWN Unable to perform DTC judgment Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit HINT: If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.   20. If the judgment result is INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN and no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-451061-S23674878372012020700000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0505) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes. Read the DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to P0505 is output A P0505 and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any DTCs other than P0505 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first. B --> See step 6 A: Go to next step
  2. CHECK PCV HOSE CONNECTIONS Check the PCV hose connections. Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2»(ref-451180-S40333274922012020700000) . OK PCV hose is connected correctly and is not damaged. NG --> See step 7 OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM Check the air induction system for vacuum leaks. Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-451179-S04241581252012020700000) . OK No leaks in air induction system. NG --> See step 8 OK: Go to next step
  4. INSPECT THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Check for contamination between the throttle valve and housing, and check that the throttle valve moves smoothly. OK Throttle valve is not contaminated with foreign objects and moves smoothly. NG --> See step 9 OK: Go to next step
  5. CONFIRM WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern. Read the DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to P0505 is output A No DTC is output B B --> END A --> See step 10
  6. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-451061-S15337112142012020700000)

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp.
  7. Check that "Coolant Temp" in the Data List is within the range of -10 to 50°C (14 to 122°F).
  8. Start the engine and warm it up until the coolant temperature is the same as the coolant temperature in the freeze frame data.
  9. Idle the engine for 1 minute or more [B].
  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [C].
  11. Read the pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
  13. Input the DTC: P050A.
  14. Check the DTC judgment result. Techstream Display Description NORMAL DTC judgment completed System normal ABNORMAL DTC judgment completed System abnormal INCOMPLETE DTC judgment not completed Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions UNKNOWN Unable to perform DTC judgment Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit HINT: If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction. If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, idle the engine for 3 minutes, let the engine cool down, and then perform steps [A] through [C] again.
  15. If no pending DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-451061-S23674878372012020700000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.
  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following the menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes. Read the DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to DTC P050A is output A DTC P050A and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any DTCs other than P050A are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.   2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (FUEL TRIM) HINT: Calculate the total fuel trim values to check the characteristic deviation of the mass air flow meter. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Short FT #1 and Long FT #1. Read the values displayed on the Techstream. Add together the Short FT #1 and Long FT #1 values to obtain the total fuel trim. Result Total of Short FT #1 and Long FT #1 values is between -20% and 20%. NG --> See step 5 OK: Go to next step
  3. INSPECT THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Check for deposits around the throttle valve and check the throttle valve condition. OK No deposits around throttle valve and throttle valve moves smoothly. OK --> See step 14 NG --> See step 4
  4. REPAIR OR REPLACE THROTTLE WITH MOTOR BODY ASSEMBLY Repair or replace the throttle with motor body assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-451166-S06090055942012020700000) . NEXT --> See step 14
  5. CHECK PCV SYSTEM Check the PCV hose connections. Refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 2»(ref-451180-S40333274922012020700000) . OK PCV hose is connected correctly and is not damaged. NG --> See step 10 OK: Go to next step

  7. INSPECT AIR CLEANER FILTER ELEMENT SUB-ASSEMBLY Visually check that the air cleaner filter element is not excessively contaminated with dirt or oil. OK Air cleaner filter element is not excessively contaminated with dirt or oil. NG --> See step 12 OK: Go to next step
  8. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (CONTROL THE VVT LINEAR) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine. Turn the A/C on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve using the Techstream. OK Techstream Operation Specified Condition 0% Normal engine speed 100% Engine idles roughly or stalls HINT: Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1 and VVT Change Angle #1]. Refer to «DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST»(ref-451061-S12130890322012020700000) . NG --> See step 13 OK: Go to next step
  9. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (MAF) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / MAF and Coolant Temp. Allow the engine to idle until Coolant Temp reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher. Read MAF with the engine speed at 3000 rpm. Standard Between 8 g/sec. and 22 g/sec. (shift lever: N; A/C: Off). OK --> See step 14 NG --> See step 15
  10. REPAIR OR REPLACE PCV HOSE Repair or replace the PCV hose. NEXT --> See step 14
  11. REPAIR OR REPLACE AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM Repair or replace the air induction system. NEXT --> See step 14

Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-451061-S23674878372012020700000) . Turn the ignition switch off. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Coolant Temp. Check that the engine coolant temperature is between -10°C and 50°C (14 and 122°F). Start the engine and warm it up. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness. Input the DTC: P050A.   15. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR Check the connection and terminal contact pressure of connectors and wire harnesses between the mass air flow meter and ECM. Refer to «ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT INSPECTION PROCEDURE»(ref-451050-S11678174372012020700000) . HINT: Repair any problems. NEXT: Go to next step
  16. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS NOTE: In this operation, the engine must be cold (approximately the same temperature as the engine coolant temperature recorded in the freeze frame data). Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-451061-S23674878372012020700000) . Turn the ignition switch off. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Coolant Temp. Check that the engine coolant temperature is between -10°C and 50°C (14 and 122°F). Start the engine and warm it up. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness. Input the DTC: P050A.   17. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (MASS AIR FLOW METER - ECM) Disconnect the mass air flow meter connector. Disconnect the ECM connector. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.   18. REPLACE MASS AIR FLOW METER SUB-ASSEMBLY Replace the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-451166-S16902211522012020700000) . HINT: If the result of the inspection performed in step 9 indicated no problem, proceed to the next step without replacing the mass air flow meter sub-assembly. NEXT: Go to next step
  19. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED NOTE: In this operation, the engine must be cold (approximately the same temperature as the engine coolant temperature recorded in the freeze frame data). Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-451061-S23674878372012020700000) . Turn the ignition switch off. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Coolant Temp. FAIL-SAFE

When either of these DTCs, or other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected, and the ignition switch is then turned off.

When DTC P2120, P2121, P2122, P2123, P2125, P2127, P2128 or P2138 is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. If either of the 2 sensor circuits malfunctions, the ECM uses the remaining circuit to calculate the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue driving. If both of the circuits malfunction, the ECM regards the accelerator pedal as being released. As a result, the throttle valve is closed and the engine idles.

The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected, and the ignition switch is then turned off.

The accelerator pedal position sensor has two (main and sub) sensor circuits. If a malfunction occurs in either of the sensor circuits, the ECM detects the abnormal signal voltage difference between the two sensor circuits and switches to limp mode. In limp mode, the functioning circuit is used to calculate the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue driving. If both circuits malfunction, the ECM regards the accelerator pedal as being fully released. In this case, the throttle valve remains closed as if the engine were idling.

If a pass condition is detected and then the ignition switch is turned off, the fail-safe operation stops and the system returns to normal.

  9. Drive the vehicle at a speed between 60 and 120 km/h (38 and 75 mph) for at least 10 minutes [B]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  10. Shift the transmission to 2nd gear [C].
  11. Accelerate the vehicle to 64 km/h (40 mph) or more by depressing the accelerator pedal for at least 10 seconds [D]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  12. Soon after performing step [D] above, release the accelerator pedal for at least 4 seconds without depressing the brake pedal in order to execute fuel-cut control [E].   1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [A]. HINT: The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be off and the shift lever should be in P or N.
  3. Turn the Techstream on.
  4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  5. Drive the vehicle at 60 km/h (37 mph) or higher for 2 minutes or more [B]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws. HINT: It is acceptable to turn electrical loads on while driving.
  6. Idle the engine for 2 minutes or more [C]. HINT: The A/C switch and all accessory switches should be off and the shift lever should be in P or N.
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [D].
  8. Read the pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  9. Drive the vehicle at less than 30 km/h (19 mph) for 5 seconds or more [E].

  12. Drive the vehicle at less than 30 km/h (19 mph) for 5 seconds or more [G].

Note. In this vehicle's EVAP system, turning ON the vent valve does not seal off the EVAP system. To check for leaks in the EVAP system, disconnect the air inlet vent hose and apply pressure from the side of the canister exposed to the atmosphere.

While the engine is running, if a predetermined condition (closed loop, etc.) is met, the purge VSV is opened by the ECM and stored fuel vapors in the canister are purged into the intake manifold. The ECM changes the duty cycle ratio of the purge VSV to control purge flow volume.

The purge flow volume is also determined by the intake manifold pressure. Air at atmospheric pressure is allowed into the canister through the vent valve to ensure that the purge flow is maintained when negative pressure (vacuum) is applied to the canister.

The following two monitors run to confirm appropriate EVAP system operation.

  1. Key-off monitor This monitor checks for EVAP (Evaporative Emission) system leaks and canister pump module malfunctions. The monitor starts 5 hours* after the ignition switch is turned off. At least 5 hours are required for the fuel to cool down which stabilizes the EVAP pressure, thus making the EVAP system monitor more accurate. The leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in the EVAP system and the pressure is measured. Finally, the ECM monitors for leaks from the EVAP system, and malfunctions in both the canister pump module and purge VSV based on the EVAP pressure. HINT: *: If the engine coolant temperature is not below 35°C (95°F) 5 hours after the ignition switch is turned off, the monitor check starts 2 hours later. If it is still not below 35°C (95°F) 7 hours after the ignition switch is turned off, the monitor check starts 2.5 hours later.
  2. Purge flow monitor The purge flow monitor consists of 2 monitors. The 1st monitor is conducted every time and the 2nd monitor is activated if necessary. The 1st monitor While the engine is running and the purge VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) is ON (open), the ECM monitors the purge flow by measuring the EVAP pressure change. If negative pressure is not created, the ECM begins the 2nd monitor. The 2nd monitor The vent valve is turned ON (closed) and the EVAP pressure is measured. If the variation in the pressure is less than 0.15 kPa-g (1.12 mmHg-g), the ECM interprets this as the purge VSV being stuck closed, illuminates the MIL and stores DTC P0441 (2 trip detection logic). Atmospheric pressure check: In order to ensure reliable malfunction detection, the variation between the atmospheric pressure before and after conduction of the purge flow monitor is measured by the ECM. The engine coolant temperature is between 4.4°C and 35°C (40°F and 95°F) The intake air temperature is between 4.4°C and 35°C (40°F and 95°F) The vehicle remains stationary (the vehicle speed is 0 km/h [0 mph]) Monitor Conditions Allow the engine to idle for at least 5 minutes. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 6 hours (or 8 or 10.5 hours). HINT: Do not start the engine until checking Monitor Status.
