Removal Procedure

IMPORTANTThe brake pedal drive motor, drive cable, and transmission for the electronic adjustable pedal (EAP) are not serviced separately, but as a unit. The new drive motor assembly will be preset in full forward position. The EAP must be set to the full forward position whenever work is done on or around the pedal assembly.

  1. Remove the steering column. Refer to «Steering Column Replacement»(ref-268093-S04235335902007101800000) .
  2. Adjust the accelerator pedal in the following manner: IMPORTANT: The accelerator pedal must be set in the full forward position before the brake pedal assembly can be replaced. If the accelerator pedal cannot be adjusted to the full forward position, because of a faulty drive cable or drive motor, perform the following service procedure: Remove the drive cable from the old drive motor. Refer to «Accelerator Pedal Assembly Replacement»(ref-268111-S00064182572007101800000) . Install the drive cable to the accelerator pedal. Attach a variable speed electric hand drill to the drive cable. Set the drill motor on the slowest speed. If the drill motor has a clutch setting, set it on the weakest or lowest setting allowing the drive cable to rotate. Rotating the drive cable in a clockwise rotation, move the accelerator pedal to the full forward position.
  3. Remove the electrical connector from the drive motor.
  4. Remove the drive cable retainer bracket at the right upper corner of the steering column support bracket.
  5. Remove the electrical connector for the brake light switch (1).
  6. Remove the retaining clip (3) from the brake pedal (4).
  7. Remove the brake light switch (1) from the brake pedal (4).
  8. Remove the brake light switch (1) from the pushrod (2).
  9. Remove the brake pedal pivot bolt and nut.
  10. Remove the brake pedal assembly from the steering column support bracket.

  1. Install the brake pedal return spring. IMPORTANT: When installing the brake pedal assembly, ensure that the bushing is in the proper position and the return spring is properly seated against the brake pedal.
  2. Install the brake pedal assembly to the steering column support bracket.
  3. Install the pivot bolt and nut. Tighten: Tighten the pivot bolt and nut to 25 N.m (19 lb ft). NOTE: Refer to «Component Fastener Tightening Notice»(ref-268087-S05601325242007101800000) .
  4. Install the brake light switch (1) on the pushrod (2).
  5. Install the pushrod (2) on the brake pedal (4).
  6. Install the retaining clip (3) on the brake pedal (4).
  7. Install the electrical connector to the brake switch (1).
  8. Install the electrical connector to the brake pedal drive motor.
  9. Install the drive cable retainer to the upper right corner of the steering column support.
  10. Adjust the accelerator pedal in the following manner: Turning the motor transmission clockwise reduces the gap, and counterclockwise increases the gap. Position the drill bit 4.5 mm (0.187 in, 3/16 or the equivalent in number and or letter drill bits) a 1/4 of an inch from the bottom of the metal accelerator pivot arm. Rotating the drive cable by hand, adjust the accelerator motor transmission until the drill 4.5 mm (0.187 in, 3/16 or the equivalent in number and or letter drill) bit fits snugly between the plastic accelerator arm and the metal pivot arm. IMPORTANT: The following procedure must be performed before the installation of the drive motor and cable assembly. Failure to do so could cause an IMPROPER STEP OVER HEIGHT.
  11. Install the drive cable in the accelerator pedal.
  12. Rotate and lock the driver cable collar.
  13. Install the steering column assembly. Refer to «Steering Column Replacement»(ref-268093-S04235335902007101800000) .
  14. Verify the operation of the adjustable pedals.
IMPORTANTThe electronic adjustable accelerator pedal, mounting bracket, return spring, and pedal position sensor are not serviced separately, but as a unit. The replacement accelerator assembly is already set in the full forward position.

  1. Adjust the brake pedal to the full forward position, toward the front of the vehicle. IMPORTANT: The electronic adjustable pedal (EAP) must be moved to the full forward position whenever work is done on or around the pedal assembly.
  2. Remove the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to «Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement»(ref-268082-S23797171272007101800000) .
  3. Remove the electrical connector for the accelerator pedal.
  4. Remove the mounting nuts for the accelerator pedal.
  5. Remove the mounting bolt behind the accelerator pedal.
  6. Remove the accelerator pedal assembly.
  7. Rotate the drive cable lock collar at the accelerator pedal.
  8. Lift the drive cable lock collar from the accelerator pedal.
  9. Using a small pocket screwdriver or equivalent, depress the secondary locking tabs on the drive cable.
  10. Remove the drive cable from the accelerator pedal.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the accelerator pedal on the mounting studs. NOTE: Refer to «Fastener Notice»(ref-268087-S07010920292007101800000) .
  2. Install the mounting nuts. Tighten: Tighten the mounting nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
  3. Install the mounting bolt behind the accelerator pedal. Tighten: Tighten the mounting nuts to 11 N.m (97 lb in).
  4. Adjust the accelerator pedal in the following sequence: Turning the motor transmission clockwise reduces the gap, and counterclockwise increases the gap. Position a 4.5 mm (0.187 in-3/16 in) drill bit or equivalent in number and/or letter drill bits, 6.35 mm (0.25 in-1/4 in) from the bottom of the metal accelerator pivot arm. Rotating the drive cable by hand, adjust the accelerator motor transmission until the 4.5 mm (0.187 in-3/16 in) drill bit or equivalent in number and/or letter drill bits, fits snugly between the plastic accelerator arm and the metal pivot arm. IMPORTANT: The following procedure must be performed before if the accelerator pedal or brake pedal drive motor and cable assembly are being replaced. Failure to do so could cause an IMPROPER STEP OVER HEIGHT.
  5. Install the drive cable.
  6. Install the drive cable lock collar. IMPORTANT: Ensure the secondary locking tabs are fully seated before installing the lock collar for the drive cable.
  7. Rotate the drive cable lock collar to the lock position.
  8. Install the electrical connection for the accelerator.
  9. Install the knee bolster trim panel. Refer to «Driver Knee Bolster Panel Replacement»(ref-268082-S23797171272007101800000) .
  10. Verify the operation of the adjustable pedals.

The adjustable pedals system consists of the following components

  1. The adjustable pedals position switch
  2. The driver seat module
  3. The adjustable pedals relay
  4. The adjustable pedals motor
  5. The brake pedal position sensor

The adjustable pedal system is controlled by the adjustable pedal switch or the driver seat module and operation can occur only while the transmission selector lever is in the PARK position. The adjustable pedal assembly is moved forward or backward by a motor, which is fixed to the brake pedal actuator with a drive cable to the accelerator pedal actuator. The adjustable pedal motor is operated by 2 motor control circuits from the adjustable pedal relay. In an inactive state, both of the motor control circuits are closed to the ground contacts within the relay. The relay coils may be energized by the relay control circuits from the driver seat module or the adjustable pedal switch. When a relay coil is energized, the motor control circuit is switched to the battery voltage supply contact. The adjuster motor is bi-directional and the direction of the pedal assembly travel is determined by which of the motor control circuits is closed to battery voltage, while the other remains grounded.

The driver seat module monitors the location of the adjustable pedals using the brake pedal position sensor. The brake pedal position sensor is supplied with 5-volt reference and ground circuits from the driver seat module. The position sensor signal circuit is referenced from ground within the driver seat module. The signal voltage monitored by the driver seat module ranges from 0.39-4.58 volts and is determined by the wiper location on the resistor within the position sensor. The position sensor circuit voltage level is used by the driver seat module to determine the position of the adjustable pedals when storing or recalling memory position settings.
