Vehicle steering
The steering wheel is the first link between the driver and the vehicle. The steering wheel is fastened to a steering shaft within the column. At the lower end of the column, the intermediate shaft connects the column to the steering gear.

Vehicle security
Theft deterrent components are mounted and designed into the steering column. The following components allow the column to be locked in order to minimize theft
- The ignition switch
- The steering column lock
- "The ignition cylinder
- The theft deterrent immobilizer module, if equipped
Lock
In order to lock the steering column, the ignition must be in the OFF position. Vehicles with automatic transmission: the gear selector lever must be in the P position to be able to turn OFF the ignition. The Body Control Module (BCM) will then check that the vehicle is stationary and one of the front doors is open. Once these conditions have been met, BCM will send signal to the Steering Column Lock (SCL) to lock.
Unlock
When the ignition button is pressed, the steering column lock (SCL) unlocks if the transponder is approved. If the car has been parked so that the steering column is straining hard on the lock bolt, it may be that the SCL is unable to unlock. The SCL will then send a message on the bus and the Instrument Cluster will instruct the driver via its display to turn the steering wheel and try again.
Driver convenience
The steering wheel and column may also have driver controls attached for convenience and comfort. The following controls may be mounted on the steering wheel or column.
- The turn signal switch
- The headlamp dimmer switch
- The wiper/washer switch
- The horn pad
- The redundant radio/entertainment system controls
- The tilt functions
- The telephone system controls
- The DIC controls
- The cruise control functions
- The automatic transmission manual setting function
Driver safety
The steering wheel and column has safety features to protect the driver. The following components may be mounted on or near the steering column
Energy-Absorbing Steering Column
The energy-absorbing steering column compresses in the event of a front-end collision, which reduces the risk of injury to the driver. The energy-absorbing feature, collapsible steering shaft, and break away mounting features help reduce the injury in the event of an accident.
SIR Coil and Module

Steering wheel angle sensor
The steering wheel angle sensor is located under the steering wheel on the contact roller for the airbag. The sensor measures the position of the steering wheel and the speed at which it is rotated. A signal representing this measurement is provided to the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) in the ABS module and to the variable effort steering (VES) system.
The theft deterrent immobilizer module
The immobilizer module is mounted in the steering column lock on cars without Passive Entry Passive Start system (PEPS). Refer to CONTENT THEFT DETERRENT (CTD) DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION .

STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY DTC INDEX
In order to lock the steering column, the ignition must be in the OFF position. - Ignition OFF, remove the KR73 RUN/CRANK relay.
- Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between pin 4 (87A) and ground. Check that the test lamp does not illuminate. ==> If the test lamp illuminates, test the circuit for a short to battery. If the test values are normal, replace the K60 steering column lock control module.
- Connect the test lamp between pin 3 (30) and ground. Check that the test lamp illuminates. ==> If the lamp does not illuminate, check the circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the connector to the K60 steering column lock control module.
- Connect a test lamp between pin 3 and ground.
- Ignition ON, bridge with a 5 A fuse between pins 3 (30) and 4 (87A). Check that the test lamp illuminates. ==> If the test lamp does not light and the fuse is intact, check the circuit for break/high resistance. ==> If the test lamp does not illuminate and the fuse has blown, test the circuit for a short to ground. If the test result is normal, replace the K60 steering column lock control module.

- Measure the resistance between pins 6 and 7 in the female connector. The value should be less than 10 ohms. ==> If the resistance is higher than 10 ohms, check the circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- Connect the test lamp between pin 5 and ground. Check that the test lamp illuminates. ==> If the lamp does not illuminate, check the circuit for a short to battery or an open circuit/high resistance.
- Connect a test lamp between pin 3 in the female connector and ground, the lamp should illuminate. ==> If the lamp does not illuminate, check the circuit for a short to battery or an open circuit/high resistance.
- Measure the voltage between pin 4 and ground. The voltage should be less than 0.3 V. ==> If the voltage is higher than 0.3 V, check the circuit for a short to battery.
- Disconnect the connector on the K84 keyless entry control module.
- Measure the resistance between pin 4 on the K60 steering column lock control module and pin 1 on the K84 keyless entry control module. The resistance should not exceed 5 ohms. ==> If the resistance is higher than 5 ohms, check the circuit for an open circuit or high resistance.
- If all the test results are normal, test or replace the K60 steering column lock control module. If the DTC returns, replace the K84 keyless entry control module

Steering Column Lock Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event performed for a complete repair.
Steering Column Lock Control Module Reprogramming
If the steering column lock control module needs to be reprogrammed, the following procedures must be performed
Connect a scan tool to the vehicle and access SPS.
Perform the SPS function Steering Column Lock Control Module - Programming and follow the on-screen instructions.
Clear DTCs after completing the programming procedure.

BACKGROUND
A number of various issues can cause similar symptoms and failure message "Service Steering Column Lock" and the car will not start. Diagnostic Trouble Codes, (DTCs), must be checked before any rectification is done. Depending on which trouble codes are set, specific measures need to be carried out. This is important so the car does not return to with the same issue. See details below.

No communication with Steering Column Lock (SCL). This DTC can be set when outside air temperature is below 0° C. This is due to a faulty capacitor in the SCL. Replace the SCL

This is fixed in production from VIN B4001033. No communication with Door Module (left front door/right front door). Remove door panels on respective door and check/repair cables that have been damaged due to contact with the sheet metal glass guide. Below is an example of a damaged wiring and how to repair this.
