Adaptation, Resetting
After changing or updating automatic transmission, TCM or software, the old adaptation data must be removed and a new adaptation performed as described below.

- Drive the vehicle slowly. Stop the vehicle by shifting the shift lever to P range and chock the vehicle. Stop the engine then turn ignition on again. NOTE: Check that the vehicle does not move before operation.
- Release the shift lock, and shift the lever to N range.
- Check that the N position mark of the TCM is correct.
- Use a scan tool to input the command of the N position. NOTE: It is not possible to input the command, unless the ignition is on, the shift lever is in N range, the engine is stopped, and the vehicle speed is 0 km/h.
- Shift the shift lever from P to D range, then check that the indicator displays the correct position. If the display is incorrect check DTCs.
- Reset adaptation using a scan tool.
- NOTE: The automatic transmission must not be warmed up by a stall test. NOTE: Adaptation can be carried out only when the transmission has attained working temperature Operate the transmission to working temperature (65-110°C). Read from the scan tool.
- Adaptation for shifting N-D and N-R is carried out with the handbrake applied. If the procedure is done in the workshop, connect an exhaust ventilator, start the car and run at idling speed. Shift from N to R. Keep R engaged for more than three seconds, then shift back to N. Repeat the procedure 5 times. Then shift from N to D the same as above, repeating the steps 5 times.
- First Gear Second Gear Third Gear Fourth Gear Adaptation for shifting up and down is done by driving on a road. Engage D and accelerate up to just over 50 km/h with the accelerator pedal at a constant position (approx. 15-20% depressed) until 4th gear has engaged. Brake until the car is stopped. Acceleration up to 50 km/h must take more than 30 sec. and braking must take more than 14 sec. Repeat the above 5 times.
- Adaptation of manual shifting from second to first gear is done on the road. Engage M2 with the shift lever. Accelerate to 25 km/h. Engage M1 and brake smoothly until the car is stationary. Repeat this procedure 10 times.
- First Gear Second Gear Accelerator Pedal Position (Pedal applied) Check that adaptation has had the desired effect and that shifting performance has improved.

Transmission Fluid Level and Condition Check
Note. The following operation includes 2 procedures: Prefill transmission oil with the engine off after repair work on the transmission, removal and installation/exchange of transmission or axle shafts. After prefilling with the engine off, the transmission oil level must be checked with the engine running. Check transmission fluid level and correct with engine running.

- NOTE: The fluid level must only be checked in conjunction with the fluid temperature, see diagnostic tool, after performing work or after a loss of fluid and must be corrected if necessary. Ensure that only the correct transmission fluid for AF40 is used for topping up. Test conditions: Vehicle must be on a flat surface. Selector lever in position P. Engine OFF. Connect diagnostic tool. Delete fault memory.
- Remove the transmission oil filler plug (1).
- NOTE: If the transmission fluid is only checked, proceed with step 13 . NOTE: The rising tube (3) may not be unscrewed to check the oil level. With the fluid check bolt unscrewed, oil flows out of the rising tube to the oil level (6) on the upper edge of the riser tube. The rising tube must only be unscrewed in order to drain the transmission (1). In this case, the seal (2) on the rising tube must be replaced. Prefill transmission fluid when changing transmission and after repair work - engine off. Place collecting pan underneath.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to «LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE»(ref-653635-S17278308762014090100000) .
- Remove the fluid check bolt (5) from the rising tube.
- Install NEW O-ring (4).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Add ATF until it drips out of the riser tube.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Refer to «FASTENER CAUTION»(ref-653635-S22306564902014090100000) . Install the fluid check bolt and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb in) .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Top up ATF above fluid filler hole. Top up 0.4 liters ATF and proceed with Step 13 .
- NOTE: Correct checking of the transmission fluid level should be carried out with the engine running at 70-80°C transmission fluid temperature. Check transmission fluid level and correct with engine running.
- Start engine and allow to run until the end of the test.
- Move through selector lever positions with the foot brake depressed. Switch selector lever from position "P" to "D" and back to "P". Hold each position for at least 2 seconds. Repeat this process twice. Check transmission fluid temperature with diagnostic tool. Raise the vehicle. Remove the fluid check bolt. Drain transmission fluid until it drips out of the rising tube, otherwise add transmission fluid until it drips out of the rising tube. Install the fluid check bolt with NEW O-ring and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb in) . Lower the vehicle. Top up 0.4 liters of ATF. Switch off the engine.
- Install the transmission oil filler plug with NEW seal ring and tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb ft) .
