  1. Scrape off any carbon deposits and burrs at the top of the cylinders. Mark the pistons with the cylinder numbers.
  2. Raise the car and drain the engine oil.
  3. Remove the oil sump.
  4. Remove the oil strainer and antislosh baffle. Wipe off dripping oil.
  5. Mark the position and remove the appropriate big-end bearing cap.
  6. Push the piston and connecting rod out of the cylinder bore. Fit the bearing shells and bearing cap loosely on the crankshaft. Remove the gudgeon pin circlip and drive out the gudgeon pin using a plastic mallet and drift.

Scheme 494: Matching to a new or rebored cylinder
  1. Push the piston rings down into the cylinder one by one, using a piston to position them correctly.
  2. Measure the ring gap with a feeler gauge. If necessary, the gap can be enlarged by means of a special file. For ring gap clearance, See «Pistons»(ref-212208-S21952488462005122300000) .

Valve gear, to remove

(Cylinder head removed)

IMPORTANTThe cylindrical surfaces round the valve springs constitute sealing surfaces for the tappets. These surfaces must not be scratched. The camshafts must come away from the bearing seats evenly.

  1. Remove the camshaft bearing caps by undoing the bolts in steps of 1/2 to 1 turn. It is important to conclude removal at the bearing cap where the tappets are under load. Lift out the camshafts and remove the stuffing boxes. Note the marking.
  2. Remove the tappets and keep them in the «83 93 787»(ref-212208-S09402876942005122300000) Valve rack to avoid mixing them up.
  3. Insert protective sleeves, part No. «83 95 022»(ref-212208-S27334477672005122300000) .
  4. Depress the valve heads using valve spring compressor «83 95 246 Valve spring compressor»(ref-212208-S01194638132005122300000) and remove the tappets.
  5. Lift out the spring caps and the valve springs. Lift out the washers and valve guide seals with Pliers 83 94 157
  6. Remove the valves and keep them in the 83 93 787 Valve rack to avoid mixing them up.

  1. Fit protective sleeves «83 95 022 Protective collar, V6»(ref-212208-S27334477672005122300000) to protect the tappet cylinders.
  2. Remove the seals from the valve guides with «83 94 157 Pliers, valve guide seal»(ref-212208-S17298691422005122300000) Pliers for removing valve stem seal.
